Biomes are the named regions Sonaria uses for region missions, Shoom Piles, shrine travel, and minimap navigation. Each one belongs to Main World, Hardcore Realm, or Aquatic Realm and runs a fixed mission template: six land tasks with a mud roll, five underwater tasks with no mud roll, or six Aquatic Realm tasks with a sandy mud roll. Where you spawn and which biome you pick shapes shrine farming, artifact runs, Hardcore Shoom bonuses, and how cleanly a swimming species can loop through layered underwater terrain.

Main World — Land biomes
These are the default overworld land mission zones. Minimap boundaries do not always cover every cave, fringe, or shore you can reach on foot. Tide and seasonal floods can open temporary bridges, so mixed shore biomes may still run land-6 tasks even when water is nearby.

How region missions use biomes
Open the Missions tab and pick a biome from the minimap. The game tracks progress per biome name, not per loose map area, so mission boundaries can be smaller than the scenery you see on foot or fin.
| Mission set | Typical tasks | Mud roll | Realms |
|---|---|---|---|
| land-6 | Six tasks including travel | Yes (mud) | Main World and Hardcore land biomes |
| underwater-5 | Five tasks | No | Main World and Hardcore underwater biomes |
| aquatic-realm-6 | Six tasks including travel | Yes (sandy mud) | Aquatic Realm only |
Completing a region mission refills the local Shoom Pile. Hardcore Realm adds a +25% Shoom bonus on those payouts, which is why players route Hardcore loops even when the biome names look familiar.
Main World: land vs underwater routing
Land biomes carry Warden shrines tied to specific continents: Angelic in Jungle, Boreal in Mountains, Ardor in Swamp Hollow, Garra on Volcano Island, Hellion in Desert (shared with Mesa), Novus on Coral Reef and Rocky Drop floating islands, and Verdant in Flower Cove. If your goal is shrine food donations or Warden progression, plan around those landmarks first.
Underwater biomes skip the mud roll but still demand travel across open water. Rocky Drop and Coral Reef act as inner-sea junctions with floating islands and shrine access. Grassy Shoal and Algae Sandbar overlap shore missions from nearby land biomes, which is normal for mixed terrain rows.
Tides, floods, and seasonal ice bridges can temporarily connect biomes that look separate on a dry map. Pride Rocks land bridges at low tide and Central Rockfaces ice links are common examples. Route planning should assume those connections can open or close mid-session.
Hardcore Realm: harder terrain, better Shoom
Hardcore unlocks from the Main Menu after 25 unique species. Growth and thirst drain faster, hazard flora appears across land and sea, and region missions pay the extra Shoom bonus mentioned above. There are no Warden shrines in Hardcore; Shadow Shrine (2,500 food, Shadow Artifact) is the shrine progression path here.
Hardcore land biomes often merge two Main World equivalents on one card. Lush Grove covers Jungle and Pride Rocks terrain; Valley of Thorns spans Tundra and Mountains; Fragmented Spire replaces Flower Cove and Forgotten Shores. Use the Main World equivalent field on Hardcore cards when you are translating a route you already know.
Shadow Isle moved from southeast Main World to the center of Hardcore Realm on January 23, 2026. It now layers over Basalt Cave, the first stacked land-over-cave biome in Hardcore. If old guides still mention a Main World Shadow portal through Rocky Drop, treat that as pre-migration history (30 species, adult status, rotating surface portal). Current Shadow access is Hardcore-only through the realm selector.
Aquatic Realm: depth layers and swim-only spawns
Aquatic Realm opened May 15, 2026 as a separate map for swimming species only. You pick it from the Main Menu; land walkers cannot spawn there. Six stratified biomes split into surface, mid, and deep layers, each running the six-task Aquatic mission set with a sandy mud roll instead of land mud.
Three Eigion shrines sit across Towering Dunes (chamber at moderate depth), Magma Fields (main lavafall), and Abyssal Depths (deep bottom). Surface biomes (Towering Dunes, Kelp Forest, Magma Fields) are the usual entry loop; mid caves (Fungal Hollow, Icy Crypt) link back upward; Abyssal Depths holds deep hazards like Tangle Kelp plus NPC activity. Aquatic Realm also ties into Marine Mutation progression and separate Aquatic daily or weekly mission tracks beyond standard region missions.
Mixed and layered terrain labels
Mixed on a card means shore, intertidal, or land-water overlap still counts under the mission type shown (land-6 or underwater-5). Mission HUD icons beat pure terrain when you are unsure which task list applies.
Layered marks Hardcore vertical stacking, mainly Shadow Isle over Basalt Cave. You can be on a land mission above while cave tunnels below still matter for routing.
Areas outside mission tabs
Nursery, Ekkaia Caldera, and Burrows appear on the map but do not have their own mission biome tabs. They still affect routing (Nursery fringes Volcano Island; Ekkaia sits near Swamp Hollow). Do not expect a separate mission payout for standing inside them.
Common mistakes
- Hunting Shadow Isle in Main World after the 2026 migration (it is Hardcore central now).
- Assuming minimap biome borders match every cave, fringe, or inter-biome zone you can walk into.
- Picking an underwater mission and expecting a mud roll (only land and Aquatic Realm six-task sets include one).
- Spawning a non-swimming species into Aquatic Realm (swim-only gate).
- Ignoring tide or flood windows when planning Pride Rocks, Central Rockfaces, or Grassy Shoal shortcuts.
- Treating Hardcore biome names as 1:1 copies of Main World names without checking Main World equivalent on the card.
FAQ
What is the difference between land and underwater region missions?
Land biomes use six tasks including a mud roll and a 2,500-stud travel requirement. Underwater biomes use five tasks and skip the mud roll. Aquatic Realm adds a sixth task set with sandy mud instead of land mud. Pick the mission type that matches the biome's mission set chip on the card.
How do I unlock Hardcore Realm?
Unlock Hardcore from the Main Menu after raising 25 unique species. Hardcore runs faster growth and thirst drain, adds hazard flora, pays +25% Shoom on region missions, and replaces Warden shrines with Shadow Shrine for artifact progression.
Where is Shadow Isle now?
Shadow Isle moved from southeast Main World to the center of Hardcore Realm on January 23, 2026. It layers over Basalt Cave. Old Main World portal rules (30 species, adult status, Rocky Drop access) are pre-migration history; current Shadow routing goes through Hardcore Realm.
How do I access Aquatic Realm?
Select Aquatic Realm from the Main Menu. Only swimming species can spawn there. The realm uses six stratified biomes across surface, mid, and deep layers, sandy-mud region missions, Eigion shrines, and Marine Mutation ties.
Do Hardcore and Main World share mission progress?
Hardcore biomes mirror Main World layouts under different names, and wiki notes suggest progress can feel shared between equivalent regions. Treat each biome name as its own mission tab until you confirm otherwise in a live session, especially after renames or migrations.
Why does a biome show mixed terrain but land missions?
Mixed means shore, intertidal, or flooded routing overlaps land and water scenery. The mission set chip (land-6, underwater-5, or aquatic-realm-6) is what the Missions tab tracks, not every puddle nearby.
What is the difference between Warden, Shadow, and Eigion shrines?
Warden shrines appear on Main World land and select underwater floating islands for standard shrine progression. Shadow Shrine sits on Hardcore Shadow Isle and takes 2,500 food for Shadow Artifact progress. Eigion shrines appear in Main World, Hardcore, and Aquatic contexts; Aquatic Realm places three across Towering Dunes, Magma Fields, and Abyssal Depths.
