Every Murder Mystery 2 round starts with two choices the game makes for you: which mode the lobby is running and which role you draw. The mode sets the rules of the round, and the role decides whether you spend it hiding, hunting, or holding the only gun in the building. Knowing both is the difference between guessing and playing.

Game Modes
Modes are picked at the lobby level and set the rules every role plays under: whether powers, pets, and radios work, whether players are recognizable, and whether there is a Sheriff at all.
Standard
Standard is the default Murder Mystery 2 mode. Each round one player becomes the Murderer, one becomes the Sheriff, and everyone else plays as Innocents, with powers, pets, radios, and emotes all usable and a free third person camera.

Disguises
Disguises hides who is who. Every player gets a matching look and a NATO phonetic alphabet name for the round, while pets, radios, and Roblox emotes are turned off, so rounds come down to pure deduction. It is the oldest mode, carried over from the original Murder Mystery.

Assassin
Assassin gives every player a knife and a single target shown on screen. Eliminate your target to receive a new one, avoid the player hunting you, and win by being the last one standing. Stabbing anyone who is not your target or your assassin briefly disables your knife.

Round Roles
Roles are dealt fresh every round in Standard and Disguises. Innocent, Sheriff, and Murderer are assigned at round start; Hero is the only one you earn mid-round.
Innocent
Innocent is the most common role in Standard and Disguises rounds. Innocents win by staying alive until the round ends or the Murderer is stopped, and any Innocent can grab the fallen Sheriff's gun to become the Hero.
- Type

- Weapon
- No weapon
- How You Get It
- Everyone not picked as Murderer or Sheriff
- Goal
- Survive the round, collect coins, and help expose the Murderer.
Sheriff
The Sheriff is the one armed defender at round start. The gun reloads after every shot, and shooting an Innocent takes both players down, so a good Sheriff stays hidden and only fires on a confirmed Murderer.

- How You Get It

- Goal

Murderer
The Murderer hunts the whole lobby with a knife that can stab up close or be thrown. The Murderer wins by eliminating everyone and loses the moment the Sheriff or a Hero lands a shot.

Hero
Hero is earned, not assigned. When the Sheriff dies, any Innocent can pick up the dropped gun, become the Hero, and take over the job of stopping the Murderer. The Sheriff and the Hero are never in play at the same time.

How modes change the way a round plays
Standard is the baseline: one Murderer, one Sheriff, and a lobby of Innocents, with powers, pets, and radios all active. It is the mode to learn the game in, because everything you unlock actually works there.
Disguises takes away the one thing most players lean on: recognition. Everyone wears the same look and carries a NATO phonetic name for the round, and pets, radios, and Roblox emotes are switched off. You cannot clear a friend by their avatar anymore, so behavior is the only tell. Watch who lingers near corners and who follows people out of rooms.
Assassin drops the detective setup entirely. Everyone has a knife and exactly one target, and each elimination hands you a new one. Someone is always hunting you while you hunt someone else, so keep moving and never stop to admire your work.
Picking your fights by role
- As an Innocent, coins are your job and information is your weapon. Track where players were when someone went down, and stay near exits rather than dead ends.
- As Sheriff, patience wins. The gun reloads after every shot, and shooting an Innocent takes you both down, so only fire when you have seen the knife.
- As Murderer, the throw is your range tool but a miss leaves you briefly unarmed up close. Isolate stragglers instead of charging groups, and remember the Sheriff only needs one clean look at you.
- Hero is the comeback role. The moment the Sheriff drops, that gun on the floor is the round. If you are close, grab it; if the Murderer is camping the body, that camp is also information about where they are.
Common mistakes
- Clearing players in Disguises because they "seem like" a friend. Names and looks are randomized; only actions count.
- Grabbing the dropped gun in front of the Murderer. Heroes who sprint straight at the body usually join the Sheriff on the floor.
- Standing still in Assassin. Your target is on your screen, but you are on someone else's.
FAQ
Which Murder Mystery 2 mode should new players start with?
Standard. It runs the classic Murderer, Sheriff, and Innocent setup with powers, pets, and radios all enabled, so everything you unlock works and every round teaches you the core loop.
What is different about Disguises mode?
Everyone gets the same look and a random NATO phonetic name for the round, and pets, radios, and Roblox emotes are disabled. You cannot recognize friends by their avatar, so you have to read behavior instead.
How do you become the Hero in Murder Mystery 2?
When the Sheriff is eliminated, their gun drops on the ground. Any Innocent who picks it up becomes the Hero and takes over the job of shooting the Murderer. It is the only role you earn during a round instead of being assigned.
Does shooting an Innocent as Sheriff have a penalty?
Yes. If the Sheriff shoots an Innocent, both of them go down. That is why experienced Sheriffs hold fire until they have actually seen the knife.
How does the game decide who becomes the Murderer?
Roles are drawn at the start of each round. Your chance of drawing Murderer or Sheriff rises the longer you go without getting them, so everyone gets their turn eventually.
