How to Pick a Major God
Each civilization follows its own pantheon, which is a group of gods from one culture, and each pantheon offers three or four major gods. You choose one before the match begins. That pick is the biggest decision of the match, since it sets your starting god power and civilization bonus, and it also decides which minor gods you'll be offered later.
The base game includes the Greek, Egyptian, Norse, and Atlantean pantheons. The Chinese, Japanese, and Aztec pantheons come through expansions, so you'll need those to play with their gods. Demeter and Freyr arrived later in their own god packs.
Minor Gods and How You Get Them
Minor gods join your side when you advance to a new age. You get three picks in a match, one each time you move from Archaic to Classical, Classical to Heroic, and Heroic to Mythic. At each of those steps, you're offered two minor gods from your major god's pool, and you choose one while the upgrade finishes. The step into the Wonder Age offers no minor god at all, so that stage adds no new god power.
Each minor god brings a god power, a myth unit, and usually three or four special technologies. Pools overlap within a pantheon, so some minor gods show up under more than one major god. Hephaestus, for example, is in the pools of Zeus, Hades, and Poseidon, so he's on the table whichever of those three you pick.
There isn't one best minor god, since the right pick depends on your army and when you need the help. Artemis stands out, though, because her Earthquake power is among the most destructive in the game and can wreck an enemy base. Balance changes with each update, so a pick that looks strong today may not stay that way.
How Favor Pays for God Powers
Favor is the resource you spend to cast god powers, and each pantheon earns it differently. Greek players send workers to pray at the Temple, which produces nothing until a worker starts it. Egyptians build monuments that generate Favor on their own, and Norse players earn it by fighting.
Zeus is the usual pick for players who want a lot of Favor, since he starts with a head start and gathers it faster than the other Greek majors.
Using God Powers Again and Again
In Retold, god powers can be cast more than once instead of being a one-time move. Each repeat costs Favor and has a cooldown before it can be used again. Those two limits make timing matter more than casting as often as you can.
Gods in the Wonder Age
Once you reach the Mythic Age, you can build a Wonder to unlock the Wonder Age. In this stage, god powers become far cheaper to cast and recharge much faster, so you can use them more often. Myth units also get a stronger boost, which makes this one of the best times to lean on your gods.
FAQ
Can you change your major god in Age of Mythology Retold?
No. The major god is locked in before the match starts, and the game treats each god choice as permanent.
How many workers should pray at the Temple?
Fewer than you might think. Each extra worker praying adds less Favor than the one before, so pulling too many off gathering can cost you more resources than the Favor is worth.
What happens to the Wonder Age bonuses if your Wonder is destroyed?
You drop back to the Mythic Age and lose those bonuses until you build a new Wonder.
