Myth units are the legendary creatures you bring into battle in Age of Mythology: Retold, like minotaurs, cyclopes, sphinxes and centaurs. They hit harder than ordinary soldiers, and the gods you worship decide which ones you can train. Training them takes favor, a special resource you gather in its own way.

What Myth Units Are and How They Fight
Retold's army has three kinds of fighters: regular human soldiers, heroes, and myth units. Myth units are creatures pulled from ancient stories, such as trolls, mummies, centaurs and cyclopes. They are strong against regular soldiers, and many of them also hold their own against other myth units.
Many myth units also have a special ability you trigger yourself in a fight, which is often what makes them worth their cost.
Which Civilizations Have Myth Units
Four civilizations come with the base game: Greek, Egyptian, Norse and Atlantean. Chinese, Japanese and Aztec myth units come from expansions instead, with Immortal Pillars adding the Chinese, Heavenly Spear adding the Japanese, and Obsidian Mirror adding the Aztec. Each civilization has its own set tied to its own gods, so the creatures you can train depend on which civilization you play.
How Favor Pays for Myth Units
Favor is separate from food, wood and gold, and almost every myth unit needs favor plus one of those other resources. You need to plan for both at once. Favor also pays for god powers, so every favor spent on a myth unit is favor you can't use for a power.
Each civilization gathers favor in its own way. Greeks have villagers pray at Temples, Egyptians build Monuments that produce it over time, and Norse soldiers earn it by fighting. Atlanteans earn it with Oracles, while Aztecs use Tonalli, the life force released from fallen warriors in battle, to fuel their favor.
Where Myth Units Are Trained and Upgraded
Most myth units are trained at the Temple, and naval ones come from the Dock. You need a Temple to move into the Classical Age, so it's one of the first buildings to plan for. Upgrades are researched at the Temple or Dock rather than the Armory, which keeps myth unit research in one place.
How Your God Choice Unlocks Myth Units
Each time you advance to the Classical, Heroic or Mythic Age, you choose a minor god to follow. That choice unlocks the myth units, technologies and god powers tied to that god, so your pick shapes the army you can build. Read what each god offers before you advance. The creature that sounds most impressive isn't always the one your army needs.
What Counters Myth Units
Heroes are the main counter to myth units. Myth units do less damage to heroes and take more from them in return, so a hero is a strong answer to an enemy army built around myth units. Because myth units are strong against regular soldiers, you still need your own regular units to hold the line.
The three types work like rock-paper-scissors, so a mix of regular soldiers, heroes and myth units is safer than leaning on just one. Which myth units do best depends on the matchup, and costs and strength shift with patches.
FAQ
Does sending villagers to pray for favor slow down my economy?
For Greeks, it does. Villagers praying at a Temple are taken off gathering food, wood or gold, so you trade some economy for favor. Decide how many to send based on how fast you plan to train myth units.
Can a hero beat an army of myth units on its own?
Usually not. A hero is a strong counter to myth units, but it can't handle a whole army by itself, especially when the enemy also has regular soldiers.
