Age of Mythology: Retold is a real-time strategy game where you build a civilization, gather resources and fight armies that include mythical creatures. Heroes are the individual units that stand out in those battles. They are built to take on myth units, and they can carry relics to Temples for useful perks. Each civilization gets its heroes in its own way, so it helps to know how they work before you plan your army.

How Heroes Fight Myth Units
Heroes are the individual units in your army that stand out from ordinary soldiers. Many of them are built to take on myth units, the mythical creatures such as centaurs, trolls, mummies and cyclops. Since they hold up well against those creatures, a few heroes can change how a big battle goes.
Heroes are not all-purpose, though. Each one has its own strengths, so the right choice depends on whether the enemy is fielding myth units, attacking buildings or mixing both.
How to Get Heroes in Age of Mythology Retold
Most heroes are trained from a building, while a few arrive through other routes. Greek heroes are named legends such as Jason, Heracles and Perseus, and a new one becomes available at the start of each age. Heracles, for example, is the Classical Age hero for Zeus.
Heroes that come from a god power work differently. Once that power's cooldown ends, you can call the hero again. Heroes you train can also be bought again after they fall, though you pay the cost each time.
Atlanteans Turn Their Units Into Heroes
Atlanteans do not have a fixed hero line the way other civilizations do. Instead, most of their human units can be converted into heroes, including Citizens. Fire Siphons, naval units and myth units cannot be converted.
Conversion happens instantly, but it costs a significant amount of resources each time. In return, the converted unit gets stronger base hit points and damage, so it is usually worth converting the units you plan to fight with.
How Heroes Carry Relics to Temples
Relics are collectibles that give perks, and only heroes can pick them up. A regular unit can walk to a relic, but it cannot take it away. To pick one up, select a hero and right-click the relic, then right-click a Temple to bring it there. A relic only gives its perk while it sits at a Temple.
Egyptian Priests can also carry relics once you research Hands of the Pharaoh. The Pharaoh can carry them too. Converted Atlantean units count as heroes, so they can carry relics as well.
Which Heroes Matter Most
The Norse Hersir is the hero you can field early. It becomes available in the Archaic Age from the Great Hall, costs food and gold, and costs no Favor. It counts as a hero by default, so it can carry relics, and it generates more Favor than ordinary units, which helps pay for god powers.
The Egyptian Pharaoh is the central hero of the Egyptian army. He empowers buildings and is highly effective against myth units. Priests are the second Egyptian hero, and unlike the Pharaoh they can be mass-produced, though each one is weaker. If the Pharaoh falls, he does not stay gone for good.
For the Greeks, Perseus is worth a close look against myth-heavy armies. His Medusa ability turns enemy myth units to stone, so he is useful when the enemy fields many of them.
Chinese, Japanese and Aztec Heroes Come From Expansions
The base game includes the Greek, Norse, Egyptian and Atlantean civilizations. The Chinese, Japanese and Aztec pantheons arrive through expansions: Immortal Pillars for Chinese, Heavenly Spear for Japanese and Obsidian Mirror for Aztecs.
Chinese heroes are trained at the Imperial Academy. Fuxi players get Nezha, who grows stronger as the ages pass, Jiang Ziya joins in the Heroic Age, and each major god adds a Mythic Age hero: Yang Jian for Fuxi, Li Jing for Nüwa and Wen Zhong for Shennong.
Japanese heroes include the Bushi, Daimyo, Onna-musha and Onmyōji. A god power can turn a Daimyo into a Shogun, which summons Samurai as it deals damage. Samurai themselves are regular soldiers, not heroes.
The Aztec pantheon brings the Warrior Priest, the only hero the Aztecs can train through normal means. He can be transformed into a Teixiptla, a temporary avatar of one of the three major gods with a limited lifespan.
FAQ
Which heroes can heal in Age of Mythology: Retold?
The Egyptian Pharaoh heals units. On the Japanese side, the Miko is a healer that also generates Favor at Shrines, while the Onmyōji heals allies and uses powerful magic.
What is the Incarnate in Age of Mythology: Retold?
The Incarnate is a stronger version of the Aztec Teixiptla. It needs six Warrior Priests inside a Great Temple, along with a devotion ability. It lasts much longer than a regular Teixiptla.
