Anime Expeditions packs a large anime-unit roster, and every ranking board lines them up differently. Use a soft consensus for the release meta instead: who tends to sit near the top, how that shifts from early Story to harder modes, and simple investment rules so Trait Crystals and evolution mats stay on keepers.
You place units, clear waves, push Story, then move into Challenges, Raids, and longer content. Full kits and obtainment notes live on Anime Expeditions units. These buckets are player consensus, not an official board, and they will move after balance patches and new banners.

Soft tier list: who multi-source guides treat as strong
Letter grades jump from site to site. Soft buckets hold up better than copying one S-to-D board.
| Soft bucket | Units | Why they matter |
|---|---|---|
| Priority carries / hybrids | Shadow (Divine), 8th Sword (Berserker), Puppet (Telekinetic), Cursed Student (True Love) | Magical team buffs and spirits, ramp DPS, damage amp with rewind, hybrid summon pressure |
| Priority support / farm / stall | Salmon Sorcerer (Grade 1), Toy Maker, Ramen Guy | Dedicated slow and stall, multi-path blockers (trait-sensitive), best long-run Yen farm |
| Strong / situational | Flame Emperor (Reincarnate), Crimson (Brother), Lady Giant (Envy), Elf Mage (Unleashed), String Demon (Awakened), Reaper (Released), True Saint (Holy), Forbidden Teacher, The Hero | Solid keepers when kits and synergies fit; placements swing hard by list |
| Early placeholders | Low-passive Epics and Rares (Bounty Hunter, Corps Captain, Rubber Boy, Carrot, and similar) | Fine for first Story hours; replace later instead of deep investing |
Shadow (Divine) buffs allied Magical units and adds lasting spirit pressure. 8th Sword (Berserker) ramps from takedowns, then spikes once Berserk is online (some boards write Berserk for the same form). Puppet (Telekinetic) amplifies damage and brings rewind utility. Cursed Student (True Love) is a hybrid DPS and summoner that lands near the top on almost every major list.
Salmon Sorcerer (Grade 1) is the dedicated stall and crowd-control support. Toy Maker places multi-path blockers and summons; with a strong trait such as Unbound it jumps hard, and without one it feels much quieter. Ramen Guy is the farm pick for long-run Yen from kills. Stone Alchemist is weaker farm and works better as an early economy placeholder than a late keeper.
Mid-board names like Flame Emperor, Crimson, Lady Giant, Elf Mage, String Demon, Reaper (Released), and True Saint (Holy) are real keepers when their kits and partners fit. They are not universal top picks on every board, so invest when the kit fits your team rather than auto-chasing every name. Aura supports such as Forbidden Teacher and The Hero help teams that need that role, not pure solo DPS charts.
When you need a full kit, open the units page for the rest of the roster instead of forcing every mid-board name into a frozen letter grade.
How to use the ranking early, late, and without wasting upgrades
Early on, prioritize solid damage so Story stages clear. Enemies that never die still leak to the base. True Saint (Holy), approachable Mythics, and strong Legendaries such as Greed or Scissor can carry until Secrets and better Mythics land. There is no single starter crown: lists disagree on the best beginner unit, so pick the strongest DPS you already own and keep Story moving. First-session order lives in the Anime Expeditions beginners guide.
Later, Challenges, Raids, and long modes reward farm, stall, and team buffs more than pure early DPS alone. Salmon stall, Ramen economy, Shadow Magical buffs, Puppet amp, and Toy Maker blockers buy time and power that raw Story carries sometimes lack.
Spend scarce mats with these rules:
- Trait Crystals and heavy gold upgrades go to keepers you expect to play for weeks, not the first Epic that clears Act 1.
- Evolve after you commit. Lobby steps and recipes sit in the Anime Expeditions evolution guide. Fix potential with stat rerolls when a keeper is worth the locks.
- Treat farm units as economy slots. They buy upgrades earlier. They are not meant to win solo damage charts.
- Watch synergies. Burn pairs and Physical or Magical auras can make a mid-board unit better on your team than a lonely top name without its partners.
- Re-check after major banners and patches. One board's low tier is not forever. Use these buckets as a priority filter, not a permanent blacklist.
Traits multiply keepers. Unbound is a common top general DPS name; others are situational. Details live on Anime Expeditions traits. Gear does the same once a unit is worth the slot. Keep this list as a priority filter when the meta shifts, not a forever ranking.
