Shields in Crimson Desert are off-hand gear you use alongside a one-handed weapon. Their main job is blocking incoming attacks, and some can also strike back with a shield bash or release force they have absorbed. The game has regular, Large, and folding shields, and each kind plays a little differently. You can get shields from shops, enemies, quests, and crafting, then refine them to make them stronger.

How Shields Work

A shield is off-hand gear, so it's carried alongside a one-handed weapon and used for guarding. Two stats show how well it does that job. Defense is the basic protection a shield gives you, and Guard Rate shows how well it blocks.

A few shields go a step further with an active effect. They absorb force and release it later as a gust of wind, a blast of fire, a burst of sound that can deafen nearby enemies, a powerful pulse, or the blast of a built-in shotgun.

Regular Shields and Large Shields

The biggest split is between regular shields and Large Shields. Regular shields have smaller Defense values, but they come with a bonus to either Attack Speed or Movement Speed, so you get faster attacks or quicker movement in return. Large Shields trade those speed bonuses for much higher Defense and Guard Rate, so they block far more but give you no speed boost.

That makes the choice a trade-off between blocking and speed. If you'd rather hold off hits, a Large Shield is the better fit. If you'd rather keep up your pace, a regular shield gives you something back for the protection you give up.

Who Can Use Shields

Not every character can use every shield. Kliff can equip regular and Large Shields, while Damiane is the one who can use folding shields. Folding shields come from House Spencer in the game's world, and their design helps cushion falls and soften landings. Oongka cannot use shields at all.

Best Shields to Use

Large Shields hold the highest Defense of any shield type. Legion Spearmen's Large Shield and Rekel Large Shield both sit at the top of that group for Defense. For the highest Guard Rate, look at Lucon Large Shield and Rekel Large Spiked Shield, which share that top figure with a few others but give up some Defense to get it.

The best regular shields share the same top blocking, so the choice between them comes down to speed. Some carry a stronger bonus to one speed, while others spread a smaller bonus across both Attack Speed and Movement Speed. Shield of the Phantom is the exception among regular shields. It has no speed bonus, but its Defense and Guard Rate match some of the strongest Large Shields.

Among folding shields, Shield of Radiance, Artisan's Ornamented Shield, and Demenissian Gold-Decorated Shield share the strongest blocking. Stormforged Shield has among the lowest Defense of any folding shield, but its damage climbs the longer you keep attacking in a row. Azurewater Shield has the same low Defense, but it pairs that with strong Guard Rate and lowers Stamina Cost.

If you want strong blocking and an active effect together, Drake Shield and Runewalker Shield both offer that, releasing fire and a powerful pulse. The shields built around wind, shotgun, or sound effects give up a lot of blocking in exchange for their effect.

How to Do a Shield Bash

A Shield Bash is an attack made with the shield itself. Hold the guard button to raise your shield, which also locks onto the nearest enemy. Keep guard held while you hold the heavy attack button, and the shield strikes. The buttons differ by platform: L1 and R2 on PlayStation 5, LB and RT on Xbox, and Ctrl and the right mouse button on PC.

Let go of guard before the strike lands and the whole move is canceled, so both buttons have to stay held until it connects. Running while holding guard is a shield charge, which can knock back a whole group of enemies at once. That makes it useful in a crowd, but a regular Shield Bash is more reliable when you need clean kills.

How to Complete the Shield of Unchanging Will I Challenge

The challenge is in Meandering Hills, and it starts with an item you need to collect first. Head to the road that runs north from Hernand Town toward the Wycliffe Mappery. Just after you pass the Saddlery and Stable, look for an altar on the east side, where the Sealed Abyss Artifact waits to be picked up. Taking that artifact activates the challenge.

Next, equip a one-handed weapon and a shield, and find a weak enemy that won't kill you before you finish it. Wear it down with regular attacks, stopping just short of the kill, then finish it with a Shield Bash. Repeat that until the third kill counts toward the challenge.

Bandits and weak wildlife near Hernand are good targets, since they tend to go down after a few bashes once they're softened up. Hold guard first, and let the lock-on confirm before you press heavy attack. Fight on flat ground, because a kill that comes from fall damage after a bash does not count toward the challenge.

Once the third kill registers, the Sealed Abyss Artifact in your inventory will glow. Open your inventory, go to the Key Item | Abyss Item group, and use the glowing artifact. That turns it into an Abyss Artifact, which is used to upgrade your character's skills. Challenges like this are an efficient way to collect them without grinding, and getting them early makes a real difference to how combat feels.

How to Get Shields

Shields come from shops, enemies, quests, crafting, and the open world, and some can be picked up in more than one way. Shopkeepers are a reliable place to check, and sellers such as Kathor in Demeniss, Temir in Calphade, and Quentin in White Mountains carry them. It pays to look at their stock as you travel.

Enemies and quests are the other big sources. Bandits, guards, and wildlife all drop shields, from Bleed Bandits in Hernand to Demenissian Guards in the Kingdom of Demeniss. Some shields are quest rewards instead, such as Staglord's Shield from Lord Amidst the Ruins during King of the Fallen Kingdom.

Crafting is the other route. Many shields are crafted at a Smith, and some also need a Shields of the World volume, from Vol. I to Vol. IV, before you can make them. Others are simply found in the open world while you explore.

How to Upgrade Shields

Shields can be refined at the blacksmith in the middle of Hernand, the starting town. Refining costs materials but no money, and each shield has a set of refinement levels to work through, up to a top level. To see what each level needs, open your inventory, choose Inspect, and then pick Refinement Information.

It's worth refining early, because upgrading your gear is very important if you want a fair chance against bosses. The wooden starting shield is decent on its own and easy to upgrade. Wooden shields need Wood, which you get by felling trees with an axe, and the Provisioner's Shop across from the blacksmith sells axes.

Cooking Lid Shields from Charting the Unknown

Charting the Unknown added a whole line of cooking lids that work as shields, from plain pan and jar lids up to the Master's versions. They are more of a themed set than the strongest option. Food Effect is the one bonus that sets them apart, with the Expert lids and each step above them adding a boost, and the Master's lids adding a bigger one.

Most of them are crafted at a Smith. The plain Frying Pan Lid is sold by Barrett at Del Ship 01, and the plain Jar Lid drops from Vancel in Tribal State of Pailune.
