Heavy weapons are the melee weapons in Crimson Desert that fall into the axe, mace, warhammer, spear, pike and halberd groups, and they're what you swing to deal damage up close. Each one has an Attack value, and many add a bonus such as Critical Rate, Attack Speed or Movement Speed. Every group handles a little differently, so the weapon you carry shapes how you fight.

What Heavy Weapons Are and Who Can Use Them
Most heavy weapon groups are named after their shape. Axes and greataxes have blades, maces and hammers are blunt, and spears, pikes and halberds sit on long shafts. Names can mislead, though. Some hammers are really staffs, such as the Antumbra's Eye carried by high priests, and some spears are staffs too, like the Sorcerer's Staff used by Tariv's sorcerers.
Most heavy weapons can be equipped by Kliff, Damiane and Oongka alike. The exceptions are the Silverwolf Axe and the Dekarr Greataxe, which only Oongka can use, so check who can wield a weapon before you put materials into refining it.
How to Get Heavy Weapons in Crimson Desert
Heavy weapons come from enemies, quests, merchants and crafting. Enemies drop plenty of them, usually specific foes in particular areas, such as the Bekker Axe from Bleed Bandits in Hernand. Some are rewards too, like Earthsplitter, a strong greataxe you earn in the Guardian of the Ancient Ruins.
Merchants in towns and camps also sell plenty of them, so you can often skip the hunt and buy a weapon outright. Kathor in Demeniss, Nork at Kharonso and Tranan at the Greymane Camp each stock a good range. The best heavy weapons are mostly placed in the world rather than dropped at random, so chests, ruins and boss rooms are worth searching.
Crafting Heavy Weapons at the Smithy
Crafting needs a manual and materials. By default, the smithy only makes arrows and bullets, so you have to get a crafting manual before it can make a heavy weapon. Equipment shops sell these manuals, and some quests reward them, such as the One-Handed Weapons of the World book sold at Rhett's shop in Hernand.
Open a manual from your inventory to learn it. You can then check what you've unlocked, and what each recipe costs, under Journal, then Knowledge, then Crafting Manuals.
The manuals are split by handedness. The One-Handed Weapons of the World books cover axes and maces, while the Two-Handed Weapons of the World books cover greataxes, warhammers, greathammers, spears and halberds. A few weapons have their own blueprint instead, such as the Flame Spear Blueprint, so keep an eye out for those too.
Melee weapons mostly need iron and copper ore, though some recipes call for rarer materials such as Abyss Cells. Many recipes also turn a weapon you already own into the new one. The smithy screen shows your current weapon and the result side by side, so check which weapon will be used up before you confirm. It's easy to lose a weapon you meant to keep.
How to Upgrade Heavy Weapons: Refining, Abyss Gear and Built-In Effects
Refining at a smithy is the main way a heavy weapon grows stronger. Every weapon refines up to a top level, and the refinement screen shows the stat gain and the materials needed before you confirm. Early levels usually take common ore, or another copy of the same weapon in place of materials.
Later levels add bloodstone and an Abyss Artifact, and duplicates only work up to the level before an Abyss Artifact is needed. The final level needs a rare Aeserion's Scale, and the only place to find those is the Serpent Shrine island. Costs rise fast as you climb, so plan before you start.
It usually makes more sense to refine the weapon you keep than to chase a slightly better starting one. Weapons of the same type tend to end up close in stats once refined, so most of the gain comes from how far you push the weapon in your hand. Before a tough fight, a grindstone gives your weapon a temporary attack boost.
Abyss Gear adds abilities through sockets. In the menus, you use Create Socket to make a socket and Embed Abyss Gear to fit a piece into it. Some of the best hidden weapons come with good Abyss Gear already socketed, so look at a weapon's sockets before you dismiss it.
Many heavy weapons also carry a built-in effect on top of their stats. The Chieftain's Mace, for example, adds extra damage against humanoid enemies, while the Silverbreaker Mace's damage builds with each consecutive attack. Others simply cut what an action costs you.
Kuku Spears Explained
Kuku spears are a family of Two-Handed Spears built around the Kuku Pot. The plain Kuku Spear began life as a storage pot, and its modular parts decide what it can do, so judge it by those parts rather than its Attack value. You craft most of them with the Kuku Spear Special Blueprint, and some versions also drop from enemies.
Each of the other versions adds its own special effect, from elemental attacks to gadgets that fire beams or push enemies away. Because the effect does most of the work, choose the version that suits your fights rather than the one with the biggest Attack value. Some effects come with a catch, and the flame version overheats if you keep swinging it.
Aeserion Heavy Weapons and Their Blueprint
Aeserion heavy weapons are crafted rather than found, and they're made from the scales of Aeserion, the Great Serpent. The family covers most heavy weapon groups, from greataxes to halberds.
The Aeserion Gear Blueprint sits in a chest on the south side of the Serpent Shrine, an island between Delesyia and Hernand. Find the ruins with a serpent mural, break the suspicious rock there with Focused Force Palm, and open the chest. The blueprint is a book, and each page teaches a different weapon, so picking it up isn't enough. Keep turning pages until you've learned every one, and then you can craft each Aeserion version at a smithy.
The same island holds the scales you need for the final refinement level. Use Axiom Force to pull the scattered scales across the island and seal them into your Kuku Pot. You don't need to fight the serpent, but take the scales back out before you visit the smithy, because it can't use materials stored inside the pot.
Banner Pikes and Contribution Pikes
Most pikes in this group are banner pikes, and most of their banners show a faction's emblem or colors, such as Calphade, Greymane or the Black Bears. They come in small and medium sizes, with the occasional tiny one, and a few have plain, unmarked banners. Enemies drop many of them, and the Small Black Bears Banner Pike is a good example, since Lonely Jackals in the Tribal State of Pailune can drop it.
The contribution pikes stand apart. Each one adds a bonus stat, most often Attack Speed and sometimes Critical Rate, and their Attack values are the highest among pikes. You don't find these in the world, because you buy each one from its faction's contribution office in a town, such as Hernand or Varnia.
Outside that group, banner pikes carry no bonus stat, so the emblem is mainly about looks.
Frying Pan and Ladle Weapons from Charting the Unknown
Charting the Unknown adds a line of cooking tools that count as maces. You start with a plain Frying Pan, bought from Cruise in Demeniss, or a plain Ladle, bought from Hopkins in Hernand. Most higher tiers are crafted from the tool just below plus another plain one of the same kind, which is how the line climbs.
Attack rises at each step, and food effects begin partway up the line, with the top versions giving the biggest food boost. If you cook a lot, these tools do double duty as a weapon and a food upgrade. Most of the line has to be crafted, but the Master's Ladle can be bought from Vincent in Hernand or Conrad at the Greymane Camp. The expansion also brings other heavy weapons, including spears and warhammers, that work the same way as the rest.
Which Heavy Weapons Are the Best?
The game doesn't rank heavy weapons, and the strongest pick depends on refinement, sockets and moveset as much as on Attack. A high Attack value is a good start, but it doesn't tell you how a weapon handles or what its sockets can hold.
The highest Attack values in the group belong to warhammers and greathammers, and the top ones carry no extra bonuses. Antumbra's Eye, a staff you can buy from Bari in Pailune, is one of them. That means a weapon with less Attack can be the better choice when its bonus suits how you fight.
Hidden weapons are often worth the trip. The Double-Headed Axe of Greed sits in a shipwreck on the southern edge of the Steel Mountains in Demeniss, where you clear the pirates and lift it out from under the barrels and debris. The Vow of the Dead King waits in a dungeon under the Frostveiled Castle Ruins in Pailune, past spike, fire and falling-ceiling traps. In practice, start with the moveset and bonuses that suit how you fight, and let Attack settle close calls.
FAQ
Can you undo refining on a heavy weapon?
Yes, with Extraction at a smithy. It sends a weapon back to an earlier refinement level and returns part of the materials you spent, without destroying the weapon. It's the fix if you change your mind after refining, since you don't lose everything you put in.
Can you dye heavy weapons in Crimson Desert?
Yes. Most heavy weapons and secondary weapons can be dyed, so you can match them to your outfit, while outfits themselves are dyed at dyehouses.
Where do you get the Soul Spear, and is it worth it?
You can buy it from Elowen in Hernand, or get it early by sneaking into the Antumbra Ritual Grounds in the Argent Peaks, northwest of Hernand. Look for a small room with a broken bridge, where the spear is set in the ground, and hide there until the prompt to collect it appears, shooting down any flying wizards that come in. It's worth the trouble for its effect: whenever you finish an enemy with a flashy finisher, it fires damaging orbs for free extra damage. The orbs don't track targets, so they help most when enemies gang up on you, and it has the highest Attack of any spear.
Are Aeserion heavy weapons worth crafting?
They're mainly a style choice. Aeserion weapons aren't really stronger than other heavy weapons, but they look great, so craft them if you like the way they look.
