How Footwear Works in Crimson Desert
Footwear takes up the feet slot, so you wear one pair at a time and swap as your needs change. Attack and Defense are the starting point for comparing boots, and both climb as you refine a pair.
Built-in effects sit apart from the base numbers. Many boots add Movement Speed, Critical Rate, Lightning Resistance or other resistances, while some carry disguise effects or special moves for getting around. Read these alongside Attack and Defense before you decide.
Boots also come in tiers from T1 to T5. A higher tier doesn't automatically mean a better pick for your build, so treat the tier as a starting point rather than a verdict.
Cloth, Leather and Plate Footwear Compared
Many boots name their material right in the title, so you can spot cloth, leather or plate at a glance. Each material leans a certain way. Plate boots usually list the highest Attack and Defense values, and since plate adds no equipment weight, it won't slow you down.
Cloth boots list the lowest Defense, but every one of them adds Movement Speed. Leather boots fall in the middle and often come with Critical Rate and Lightning Resistance. Most plate boots have no extra built-in effects, though a few add Critical Rate or swimming bonuses.
How to Get Footwear in Crimson Desert
Footwear comes from a few main places, and you'll often need to try more than one. Certain enemies drop specific boots, so if you're after a particular pair, it helps to know who carries it. Quest rewards are another route, and merchants in towns and camps sell a good spread of pieces.
Smithies are the other big source. Many boots are crafted at a smith, and some of those need you to learn a blueprint or one of the Armors of the World books first. Some pieces also turn up simply by exploring the open world, sometimes in hidden chests.
Footwear With Special Abilities and Disguises
Not every boot is about the numbers. Some change the way you move, and the Vaporwalkers are a good example. They give you the Skipping Stones ability, letting you slide across shallow water, and you trigger the slide just as you enter the water. Carry enough momentum and you can skate over a bit of deeper water too, and the charges refill over time.
Water-focused boots form their own group. Tidebreaker Boots use underwater propulsion to help you move quickly through water, and the diving boots raise your Swim Speed. Some diving pieces also add extra breath underwater, and these are worth a look if your travels involve rivers, seas or slippery seabeds.
Other boots play with movement in their own ways. Booster Boots have built-in propulsion for a quick leap forward or escape, and Giant's Boots release a shockwave when you land from a height. Fire Walk Boots leave fire along the ground after consecutive evades, and Shoddy Rishi's Boots help you dash faster with repeated evades. The Kuku boots play with gravity, forming briefly gravity-defying footholds beneath the wearer.
Disguises and riding gear make up the rest. The Shadowleaf Boots come with a wildlife disguise, and the St. Halssius priest boots carry their own disguise. Some Demenissian boots add the Righteous Inquisitor and Demenissian Faction disguises. For riders, Riding Boots add extra horse experience, and Stirrups of the Open Sky help you grip rock and hang on to a flying mount that's fighting back.
So which ones matter most? That depends on what you do most. If you cross a lot of water, check the Vaporwalkers and the diving boots first. If you ride often, the riding pieces are worth a look, and if disguises interest you, the Shadowleaf and Demenissian boots are the places to start.
How to Upgrade Footwear With Refinement
Boots are upgraded at a smithy through Refinement, which has ten levels for each item. The first smithy in Hernand sits in the middle of town, and refining costs materials rather than money. Before you spend anything, open your inventory, choose Inspect, and then pick Refinement Information to see what each level needs.
The materials depend on what the boot is made of. Plate boots need ore, which you mine from mountain walls with a pickaxe. Leather boots need hides and bones from animals you hunt, and cloth boots need cloth pieces and fleece.
Smithies also offer Extraction, which lowers a boot's Refinement level and gives back part of the materials you put in. Rare materials return in full, while you get back only part of the common ones. Use it when you've tested a replacement that's clearly better, since shuffling common materials around wastes some of them.
The final level needs a rare material called Aeserion's Scale. Save it for a pair you plan to keep, since there's no point spending it on boots you expect to replace soon.

Where do I find the Vaporwalker boots?
The Vaporwalkers sit in a chest inside the Ancient's Heart Cave, which is in the Ancient Rift in north Hernand, north of the Forest of Wolves and the Hills of No Return. The chest is hidden behind a waterfall, so use the stab skill to get through, then break the rock behind it with Force Palm or Turning Slash. The same chest also holds a Refined Palmar Pill.
Can Damiane wear the same boots as Kliff?
It depends on the boot. Kliff and Oongka can wear most boots, Damiane has her own set, and some boots fit all three characters, such as the Tidebreaker Boots, the Kuku Breeze-Step Boots and the Dark Marksman's Plate Boots.
Do boots with the same name give a set bonus?
Boots that share a name, like the Charter's diving boots, are grouped by look and naming. Each pair's built-in effects are what matter, so judge each boot by its own effects when you compare.
Where can I buy footwear in Crimson Desert?
