How to Fix "An Unexpected Error Occurred and Roblox Needs to Quit"

Updated on June 27, 2026 (about 1 hour ago)

Roblox opens for a second on your Windows PC, then closes with a popup that says "An unexpected error occurred and Roblox needs to quit." The game window never loads.

This is a problem on your own computer, not a ban and not a broken game. It usually comes from a corrupted Roblox cache, a graphics driver issue, a conflicting overlay or security app, or a damaged install.

The fixes below are ordered from quickest to most thorough. Try them one at a time and launch Roblox after each one until it opens.

# Fix What it does
1 Restart your PC Clears stuck background processes
2 Run as administrator Lets Roblox reach blocked files
3 Clear the Roblox cache Removes corrupted cache files
4 Close overlays and extra tools Stops apps that hook into Roblox
5 Update drivers and Windows Fixes outdated graphics drivers
6 Add an antivirus exception Stops security software blocking Roblox
7 Turn off Memory Integrity (Windows 11) Optional, community-reported fix
8 Reinstall Roblox cleanly Replaces damaged install files

How to fix it

1. Restart your PC and relaunch Roblox

A simple restart clears stuck background processes that can crash the app on launch.

  1. Open the Start menu and choose the power icon.
  2. Pick Restart and wait for Windows to load.
  3. Open Roblox again.

2. Run Roblox as administrator

Giving Roblox admin rights lets it reach files it may be blocked from.

  1. Right-click the Roblox shortcut or its Start menu entry.
  2. Choose Run as administrator.
  3. Select Yes on the prompt.

3. Clear the Roblox cache

A broken cache is one of the most common causes, and deleting it forces Roblox to build a fresh one.

  1. Press Win + R to open the Run box.
  2. Type %localappdata% and press Enter.
  3. Delete the Roblox folder.
  4. Launch Roblox again so it rebuilds the cache.

4. Close overlays and extra tools

Overlay apps can hook into Roblox and trip its crash protection.

  1. Close MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner from your system tray.
  2. Turn off the Discord, GeForce Experience, and Xbox Game Bar overlays.
  3. Reopen Roblox.

5. Update your graphics drivers and Windows

Outdated drivers cause random crashes on launch.

  1. Update your graphics drivers from your GPU maker's software (NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel).
  2. Open Settings > Windows Update and install any pending updates.
  3. Restart and reopen Roblox.

6. Add Roblox as an antivirus exception

Third-party antivirus software sometimes blocks Roblox files and forces it to quit.

  1. Open your antivirus app's settings.
  2. Add Roblox as an exception or allowed app.
  3. If you are not sure it is the cause, briefly turn the antivirus off to test, then reopen Roblox.

7. Turn off Memory Integrity on Windows 11 (optional)

Some Windows 11 players report this clears the crash.

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Go to Device security > Core isolation details.
  3. Switch Memory integrity off.
  4. Reopen Roblox, and turn the setting back on after your session.

8. Reinstall Roblox cleanly

If nothing above works, a clean reinstall replaces any damaged files.

  1. Uninstall Roblox from Settings > Apps.
  2. Press Win + R, type %temp%, and delete any leftover Roblox folder.
  3. Press Win + R, type %localappdata%, and delete the Roblox folder.
  4. Reinstall from the official Roblox download page.

If Roblox still crashes

If a clean reinstall did not help, install the Microsoft Store version of Roblox instead. Some players find the Store build more stable on Windows.

When even that fails, reach out through Roblox Support with your device details. Roblox can only be played through the installed desktop app or the Microsoft Store app, so those are your two options.

FAQ

Q.

Why does Roblox crash right after I open a game?

It is almost always a local PC issue, not the game. A corrupted cache, a conflicting overlay, or an outdated graphics driver are the usual reasons, and the fixes above clear it for most people.

Q.

Does this error mean my account or the game is banned?

No. It is a crash in the Roblox app on your computer, not a ban or an account problem. You can still sign in normally once the app launches.

Q.

Will reinstalling Roblox delete my account or progress?

No. Your account, items, and progress are saved on Roblox's servers, not in the install on your PC. Reinstalling only replaces the app files.
