How to Fix "An Error Occurred and Roblox Cannot Continue"

Updated on June 27, 2026 (about 3 hours ago)

Roblox won't start on your Windows PC, and you get a popup that says "An error occurred and Roblox cannot continue." Sometimes it adds a second line: "Expected channel name when using -channel, use for empty value." Either way, the game never opens.

This is a problem with the Roblox app on your computer, not a ban and not a broken game. Your account, items, and progress are safe on Roblox's servers.

It usually comes down to Roblox not having the rights it needs to launch, or a broken launch shortcut that passes the app a bad startup setting. It can also be a damaged install or a short server-side hiccup.

This popup is different from the one that lets Roblox open for a second and then crashes with "An unexpected error occurred and Roblox needs to quit." If that is the message you see instead, the steps in the fix for the "needs to quit" crash are a better match.

The fixes below go from quickest to most thorough. Try them one at a time, and launch Roblox after each one until it opens.

# Fix What it does
1 Restart your PC Clears stuck launch processes
2 Run Roblox as administrator Gives Roblox the rights it needs to start
3 Click No on the permission prompt Optional reported workaround
4 Clear the Roblox app data Removes a corrupted launch state
5 Lower your graphics quality Eases strain on weak hardware
6 Update Windows Fixes outdated system files
7 Reinstall Roblox cleanly Replaces a broken install or shortcut
8 Repair Visual C++ Redistributables Last resort for missing system libraries

How to fix it

1. Restart your PC and relaunch Roblox

A restart clears stuck background processes that can block Roblox from starting.

  1. Open the Start menu and choose the power icon.
  2. Pick Restart and wait for Windows to load.
  3. Open Roblox again.

2. Run Roblox as administrator

This is the fix that works for most people. Giving Roblox admin rights lets it reach the files it needs to launch.

  1. Right-click the Roblox shortcut or its Start menu entry.
  2. Choose Run as administrator.
  3. Select Yes on the prompt.

To make this stick every time, set it on the app itself.

  1. Right-click the Roblox Player shortcut and choose Properties.
  2. Open the Compatibility tab.
  3. Tick Run this program as an administrator, then select Apply.

3. If a permission prompt keeps popping up, click No

Some players report an odd workaround when a User Account Control prompt keeps appearing on launch. It is not guaranteed, but it takes a second to test.

  1. Launch Roblox and wait for the permission prompt.
  2. Select No each time it appears.
  3. Keep clicking No until the prompt stops and Roblox loads.

4. Clear the Roblox app data

A corrupted launch state is a common cause, and clearing the app data forces Roblox to rebuild a clean one.

  1. Press Win + R to open the Run box.
  2. Type %localappdata% and press Enter.
  3. Delete the Roblox folder.
  4. Launch Roblox again so it rebuilds the folder.

5. Lower your graphics quality

On weaker PCs, high graphics settings can strain the hardware and trip the launch.

  1. Open Roblox and join any experience, or use the in-game menu.
  2. Open settings with the Esc key or the menu icon.
  3. Set Graphics Quality to a lower level.

6. Update Windows

Outdated system files can clash with the Roblox app.

  1. Open Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Install any pending updates.
  3. Restart and reopen Roblox.

On Windows 11, you can also turn off Memory Integrity as an optional test. Open Windows Security, go to Device security > Core isolation details, switch Memory integrity off, then turn it back on after your session.

7. Reinstall Roblox cleanly

If nothing above helps, a fresh install replaces a damaged shortcut or broken files that cause the launch error.

  1. Uninstall Roblox from Settings > Apps.
  2. Press Win + R, type %localappdata%, and delete any leftover Roblox folder.
  3. Reinstall from the official Roblox download page.

If the standard installer keeps failing, install the Microsoft Store version of Roblox instead. Some players find that build more stable on Windows.

8. Repair Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables

Roblox relies on these system libraries, and a damaged copy can stop it from launching. Only try this if the steps above did not work.

  1. Open Settings > Apps.
  2. Find each Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable entry.
  3. Choose Repair, or reinstall the latest version from Microsoft's official download page.

If Roblox still won't continue

If you have worked through every fix and the popup still appears, the trouble may be on Roblox's side for a short while. Check the Roblox status page, wait a bit, then try again.

When it keeps happening, reach out through Roblox Support with your device details. Roblox runs only through the installed desktop app or the Microsoft Store app, so those are your two ways to play.

FAQ

Q.

Does "Roblox cannot continue" mean I'm banned?

No. It is a launch error in the Roblox app on your computer, not a ban or an account problem. You can still sign in normally once the app opens.

Q.

What does "Expected channel name when using -channel" mean?

It means Roblox was started with a broken or empty launch setting, usually from a damaged shortcut. Clearing the Roblox app data or doing a clean reinstall fixes the launch path.

Q.

Will reinstalling Roblox delete my account or items?

No. Your account, items, and progress are saved on Roblox's servers, not in the install on your PC. Reinstalling only replaces the app files.
