Mewgenics is a tactical roguelike where you breed cats and send them into turn-based battles on grids. Cats can wear gear, and many of those pieces belong to item sets, which are groups of gear that share a theme. Wear enough matching pieces on one cat and that cat gets a bonus on top of what each piece already does.

What Are Item Sets in Mewgenics?
An item set is a group of gear pieces that belong together by theme. Each piece has its own stats, and those help on their own, but a set adds something extra once enough of its pieces are worn by the same cat. That extra effect is why sets matter, since a full set can change how a cat fights instead of only adding a few points to its numbers. The bonuses vary a lot. Some raise stats, some add Shield or other defense, and some give a cat new abilities or new ways to move around the battlefield.
How Many Pieces Do You Need for a Set Bonus?
Every set needs three matching pieces on the same cat. Once that count is reached, the bonus turns on by itself, so there's no separate step to activate it. Many sets have more than three pieces to choose from, so you can pick the three that suit the cat.
The Tinkerer class is the main exception. Its Item Proxy passive lowers how many matching pieces a set needs. If you plan to build around sets, that passive is worth taking early.
Class Sets and Other Sets
Item sets fall into two main groups. Class sets are tied to one of the game's classes, and their bonuses fit what that class does best. The Tinkerer's set, for example, adds four Scrap pickups at the start of each battle, a bonus that suits a class built around crafting and repairing gear. Every other class, Collarless included, has its own set too.
Other sets are not tied to a class. They cover a wide range of themes, from materials like alloy and cardboard to creatures and magic. Each one has its own bonus, so it pays to look at what a set does before you commit a cat to it.
Which Mewgenics Item Sets Are the Strongest?
The best set depends on the job a cat has in the team. Defensive sets suit tough front-line cats that take hits, while offensive sets suit cats that deal the damage. Some sets are strong enough to build a whole cat around.
Bionic stands out for mobility, since it turns movement into a teleport with no range limit. Demonic is a strong pick for a cat that finishes off enemies, because it adds 6 Shield every time it gets a kill. Lucky is a quieter choice, adding 1 Luck and 5 to 10 extra coins on each map.
Sets also reward focus. Completing a set on one cat usually beats wearing three strong pieces from different sets, because the completed bonus works like an extra piece. In most cases, sticking with one set per cat is a better plan than mixing partial bonuses.
How to Keep Set Gear From Breaking or Being Lost
Some gear is Fragile or Brittle, which makes it break sooner and can cost you part of a set in the middle of a run. The Bionic, Cardboard and Lucky sets remove the Fragile tag from their pieces.
The bigger risk is the cat itself. When a cat dies, it's lost along with all of its equipped gear, so a full set can disappear in one bad fight. A set is only as safe as the cat wearing it, so put your strongest set on cats you plan to keep.
FAQ
How do I tell which set an item belongs to?
Set membership shows up in the item's tooltip. Check it before you equip a piece so you know which bonus it's building toward.
What happens to a set bonus if I move a piece to another cat?
The bonus belongs to the cat wearing the pieces, not to the items themselves. The cat you take the piece from loses that bonus, and the cat you move it to gains the bonus only if it has enough matching pieces.
What is the Rune of Perthro?
It's a rare item that counts as part of the set of every other item a cat is wearing. That means it can count toward whichever set your other gear belongs to, which makes it useful on a cat that wears pieces from different sets.
