How Heavyweight Fishing skills work in a fight

Skills are used during reel fights, whether you're pulling in a heavy fish or taking on a boss. Owning one isn't enough on its own, though. You have to equip it first so it's ready when the fight starts.

Skill effects fall into a few broad groups. Some stun the target for a set time, holding it in place. Others keep damaging the target over time, and a few block damage from boss skills, which lets you keep fighting through a boss's strongest moves.

The rest do something different. A few boost your rod's Power for a short stretch, one heals you, and another drains your own HP while it's active. Effects vary a lot, and the name alone won't tell you what a skill does, so check it before you rely on it in a big fight.

How to buy skills with Cash

The seller, Sage Yijiu, is on the starting island and sells a set list of skills for Cash. That list runs from cheap picks to very expensive ones, so some skills take a while to save up for. Every skill in the shop has a fixed price, and buying is instant with no roll involved.

That makes the shop the surest way to get a particular skill, since you know exactly what you're getting before you pay.

Skills from summon banners and pity

Summon banners are the other main way to get skills. The Taiji and Egoless banners each have their own skill pool, and you pay for each summon with Tickets or Crystals, which you earn through play. Results are random, so you may need several pulls before you land the skill you're after.

Pity is a safety net for bad luck. Every summon counts toward it, even the ones that miss, and once you've done enough, it guarantees a higher rarity tier. The guaranteed rarity can still contain a different skill from the one you were chasing. A drop only comes from the fish or boss that carries it, so your time goes into hunting that one target. The Mountain Dragon Whale, a boss, drops Pacifies the Clouds, and the Dark Kingfish drops Dragon Subjugation.

Each route suits a different kind of player. The shop and quest rewards are the predictable ones, since you know what you'll get and where. Banners are the gamble, because results are random and pity only guarantees a rarity tier, while drops are fixed to one target and take time to chase.

If you're building up over time, mix routes: quests and drops add skills along the way, and banner pulls give you a shot at the rest.
