Finding food early

Use the starter Fishing Rod to build an early food supply. You can also Harpoon floating Potatoes near the raft and hit daytime birds to get Cooked Bird, which makes looking up worthwhile for once.

Crab Traps can passively bring in fish and food. A Pizza Oven fills a similar food-production role as your raft grows, so you do not have to spend every calm moment holding a rod.

Deciding what to keep

Do not eat every food pickup as soon as it lands. Starvation stops normal health recovery, so keep enough food for survival, then save ingredients needed for your next potion.

Spare food can be traded to the Fisherman for valuable loot. Hold onto anything required for a planned brew before trading, especially food that appears across several potion roles.

Food and potion roles

A named potion use means that food appears in the brew's recipe. Healing, Attack, Defense, Utility, and Wacky describe what those potions are for, not what happens when you eat the ingredient. A Defense ingredient will not make your lunch block damage by itself.
