In Undead Nightmare, a town the undead have overrun shows what it needs: helping its survivors, clearing a set number of undead, or both. Saving a town unlocks its safehouse, and each town's first save pays its listed reward and adds 1% toward 100%, so the order you save them in decides which safehouse and reward you get first.

Which Town to Save First
Blackwater is the one town with no map gate, and you save it during the story mission Curious Tales from Blackwater. It's the natural first stop.
Opening the Other Towns
Cochinay, Manzanita Post and Pacific Union RR Camp open after you finish Curious Tales from Blackwater and first enter Tall Trees.
New Austin and Nuevo Paraíso work by area. Each town appears on your map once you've first entered its area. Cholla Springs opens the most towns in New Austin. In Nuevo Paraíso, Perdido and Punta Orgullo tie for the most. Entering those areas early puts the most towns on your map.
First-Save Rewards
Most rewarded towns give a weapon. Dynamite and Fire Bottles are the only other rewards. Blackwater, Armadillo, MacFarlane's Ranch, Plainview and Las Hermanas give nothing on first save.
Ammo to Carry
Each town's requested ammo is the type its survivors ask for. Revolver Ammo is the one to stock up on. It's requested by more towns than any other type once mixed requests count, and it shows up in both New Austin and Nuevo Paraíso.
Sniper Rifle Ammo comes next. Blackwater, Cochinay and Pacific Union RR Camp all ask for it, so it covers most of West Elizabeth.
When a Saved Town Falls
Saved towns can be overrun again, so watch for the warning messages. A fallen town can be saved again, but its safe status is only temporary and there are no chests to loot. Your first save still counts toward 100%, even if the town falls later.
FAQ
Do the towns have to stay safe at the same time for 100%?
No. Keeping every town safe at once is a separate challenge from 100%.
Do I need to save Fort Mercer, El Presidio or Casa Madrugada?
No. They're fixed safe zones that never get overrun, so they don't count as towns to save.
Does this cover Red Dead Redemption or multiplayer?
No. Only the Undead Nightmare campaign counts here. The original Red Dead Redemption campaign and its multiplayer are separate.
