Undead Nightmare is the supernatural single-player expansion for Red Dead Redemption. As John Marston, travel through West Elizabeth, New Austin, and Nuevo Paraíso while an undead plague reshapes the frontier. Protect survivors, reclaim infected towns, cleanse cemeteries, rescue missing persons, complete story and survivor missions, and follow the campaign toward a cure.
The expansion changes the combat and survival loop with scarce ammunition, undead animals, mythical creatures, and expansion-specific crafting. Use Dead Eye and headshots against normal undead, Bolters, Bruisers, and Retchers; use undead bait, Boom Bait, Holy Water, Phosphorus Rounds, and the Blunderbuss as the campaign opens them up. Pursue challenge ranks, outfits, and the Four Horses of the Apocalypse, while keeping the Unicorn on its separate mythical reward path. This hub covers only that supernatural single-player campaign, not the ordinary Red Dead Redemption Story Mode, the original 2010 legacy multiplayer or Free Roam modes, Red Dead Online, or Undead multiplayer modes.

Undead Nightmare adds a supernatural single-player campaign to Red Dead Redemption, sending John Marston through an outbreak that reaches the frontier and Mexico. Follow the mission markers through the expansion’s territory branches, then return to the ranch for its epilogue. Survivor Side-Missions, challenge activities, and multiplayer use separate routes.
Undead Nightmare gameplay tips
- Keep the scope straight. Undead Nightmare is a separate supernatural single-player campaign. The ordinary Red Dead Redemption Story Mode, the original 2010 legacy multiplayer and Free Roam modes, Red Dead Online, and Undead multiplayer modes are outside this hub. Modern releases can package Red Dead Redemption and Undead Nightmare together as single-player experiences, but that does not restore the original multiplayer.
- Prioritize headshots and use Dead Eye when several undead converge. Switch to melee or executions when ammunition or Dead Eye is low.
- Save towns early for ammunition and possible weapons. Protect survivor leaders and escorted missing persons during rescue missions.
- Collect Wild Feverfew, Prairie Poppy, Violet Snowdrops, and Desert Sage as the relevant recipes unlock. Keep materials ready for undead bait, Boom Bait, Phosphorus Rounds, and Blunderbuss ammunition, and use Holy Water as an expansion-specific option.
- Use the map and town safety meter to track town objectives and see which areas still need attention.
- Break the Four Horses of the Apocalypse as their challenge and region requirements become available. War, Pestilence, Famine, and Death are separate from the Unicorn's mythical reward path.
- A rescued town can be attacked again. The first successful rescue remains the meaningful completion event, so do not mistake a later attack for lost progress.
