Catching the Four Horses of the Apocalypse means riding off the road and watching for a mythical-creature alert. Each horse is a lasso-and-break hunt, and each one brings a power that changes how you fight. The Unicorn is an optional bonus mount with its own rules.

Four Horses of the Apocalypse
Unicorn (optional)
Where to Start: Pestilence, War or Famine
The first three horses can fill ranks 1 to 3 in any order, so start in the region you're already exploring. Each one lives in a different part of the map, so it pays to finish one region before you ride to the next.
Taming a Horse, Step by Step
- Ride off-road in the horse's region. Roads won't turn one up.
- Keep riding until the mythical-creature alert pops up, then follow the shaded circle on your map.
- Lasso the horse, then break it.
Best Apocalypse Horse for Each Job
No single horse wins every fight, so pick by what you need.
| Horse | Best for | Ability |
|---|---|---|
| Famine | Long rides across the map | Brings a swarm of insects and never tires |
| Pestilence | Surviving a rough fight | Very hard to bring down |
| War | Mixed fights | Sets enemies on fire, living and undead |
| Death | Undead-heavy fights | Crushes undead on contact |
| Unicorn | Getting around fast | Fastest mount |
If you only pick one for fights, take War. Its fire works on living and undead enemies alike. Death is the better choice when undead are almost all you're facing. You need Death for rank 4 and rank 5 either way.
Finding Death, the Last Horse
Death doesn't show up until Pestilence, War and Famine are all tamed. After that he's random, and he can appear off-road in New Austin, Nuevo Paraíso or West Elizabeth. Hunt him the same way as the others, and don't waste time looking for him before the other three are yours.
Calling Horses Back with Blood Pacts
Rank 5 of the Four Horses challenge has Death kill one of each undead type. Finish that rank and you get every Blood Pact. Each Blood Pact lets you call its horse. If a horse dies or you replace it before the challenge is finished, it can't be called back until the challenge is done.
The Unicorn: Optional Bonus Mount
The Unicorn needs the Chupacabra killed and the Four Horses challenge finished. Head to the three-horse mark on your map, north of Torquemada, then search the fields northwest of town. Look for the rainbow trail it leaves behind. It's the fastest mount, and taming works the same way: lasso it, then break it.
The Chupacabra belongs to the Undead Hunter challenge, and its tiers are covered in Undead Challenges. If the Chupacabra won't appear, dismount and search on foot, since riding an Apocalypse horse may keep it from showing up.

FAQ
Why isn't the mythical-creature alert showing up?
The alert only fires when you get close, so keep riding through the region instead of waiting in one spot.
Can I miss Death?
Not for good. If you haven't found him by the end of the story, the finale gives him to you.
Is the base game's War Horse one of these?
No. The base-game War Horse is a separate mount from the Apocalypse War in Undead Nightmare. The Apocalypse War sets enemies on fire, living and undead. The base game's horses are covered on Red Dead Redemption horses.
