Ride a Pet Mutations Explained: Effects and How to Get Them

Updated on September 17, 2026 (1 day ago)

Mutations can make a Ride A Pet more useful by improving its speed, its Cash earnings, or both. An active weather event has to send lightning toward an eligible pet, so getting one is partly about choosing the right target and waiting in the right place.

If you are trying to protect a valuable pet, keep it in your Pen while you wait instead of racing around on it. Mounted pets can move past the spot where a bolt lands. Here is what all five weather mutations do, how to target one, and what to look for after a successful strike.

What Mutations Do in Ride A Pet

A weather mutation stays on a pet until a higher-tier weather strike replaces it. The effect can be a speed boost, a per-second Cash boost, or both. The weather route has no listed currency, item, quest, age, or rarity requirement, so an existing pet can be a target regardless of its age or rarity.

The important limitation is that the lightning strike is random. An active storm gives you an opportunity, not a guaranteed mutation, and the exact per-pet strike chance is unknown.

All Ride A Pet Mutations and Their Effects

The five weather events map directly to the five mutation names. Use the event column when you are waiting for a particular result.

MutationMatching weather eventCash effectSpeed effect
ShockedThunder2x Cash2x Speed
VoltedVolt3x Cash3x Speed
RageRage4x Cash4x Speed
VoidVoid10x CashNot confirmed
EternalEternal100x CashNot confirmed

The first three rows have clear Cash and Speed values. Void and Eternal are less settled: their 10x and 100x Cash effects are consistent, but published tables disagree about whether those tiers also multiply Speed. Check the in-game pet card before choosing a top-tier pet specifically for movement, and do not treat Eternal as a guaranteed fastest option. Sale Value is omitted because it is not confirmed here.

The Index view shown above separately says weather mutations stack with hatch mutations. That means the one-weather-mutation replacement rule should not be read as proof that a pet can never have another mutation category.

How to Get Mutations in Ride A Pet

You can mutate an existing pet by keeping it in the Pen or riding it during the weather event that matches the mutation you want. Each event is reported to last about five minutes, but no server schedule is confirmed.

  1. Choose the mutation you want. Match your target to its weather event in the table above. For example, wait for Thunder for Shocked, Volt for Volted, Rage for Rage, Void for Void, or Eternal for Eternal.
  2. Place the target in your Pen before the event. Pets inside the base have a better reported chance of being struck. A pet you are currently riding can also be affected, but inventory pets are not eligible.
  3. Wait for the lightning without outrunning it. Weather lightning can hit pets inside or outside the base. If you ride a fast pet around the map, you can pass the location where the bolt lands, so leaving the target in the Pen is the safer setup for a valuable pet.
  4. Inspect the pet after a strike. Electric effects around the pet's body are the visible confirmation that lightning granted a mutation. Check the pet's label and displayed stats, then keep the new result if it is useful.

A missed strike does not mean you used the wrong pet or need a special item. Keep the pet eligible for the next lightning opportunity, because the exact chance of an individual strike is unknown.

What Happens If a Pet Already Has a Mutation?

Within the weather-mutation group, a higher-tier lightning strike can replace a weaker weather mutation. The new result takes the place of the old weather bonus, and there is no separate reroll action in this route. Lower-tier downgrade behavior is not established, so do not deliberately expose a good mutation to a weaker event expecting a predictable result.

The Index's hatch-mutation note is a separate detail: weather mutations can stack with hatch mutations. Keep that category distinction in mind when you inspect a pet instead of assuming that every mutation is part of one five-step ladder.

Can Eggs Get Mutations in Ride A Pet?

Yes. An egg placed in the Pen can be affected before it hatches. Put the egg in the Pen before the weather event, leave it there while the event is active, and hatch it afterward to check whether it received the matching mutation. This is an optional route; you do not need an egg to mutate a pet you already own.

For the safest attempt, start with the pet or egg you want to mutate, put it in the Pen before the matching weather arrives, and use the electric effect and mutation label as your confirmation. Keep the Void and Eternal speed claims open until the in-game card gives you a clear answer.
