Roblox error code 280 shows up as "Your version of Roblox may be out of date. Please update Roblox and try again. (Error Code: 280)". The Roblox build on your device is older than the build the servers accept, so you cannot join until the app updates.
It is not a ban. Start with the update method for your installation, then reinstall if the new build does not apply.
One quick check before you start: if your error talks about a failed connection instead of an old version, you are dealing with error code 279, which has its own fixes. Error 280 is a version problem.

Update Roblox the right way on your platform
Each install gets updates through a different place. Find your platform below and use that route.
1. Relaunch the desktop app on PC and Mac
The Roblox app installed from roblox.com checks for an update when it starts. Close it fully so that check can run again.
- Close every Roblox window completely.
- Open Roblox again from your desktop or Start menu.
- Let the update window finish. Do not close it early.
- Join a game.
If no update window appears and 280 remains, jump to fix 5 on Windows or fix 6 on Mac.
2. Update Roblox - Windows through the Microsoft Store
The Microsoft Store controls updates for its Roblox app. Relaunching the app alone may not install the newer build.
- Open the Microsoft Store.
- Select Library.
- Select Get updates and let the Roblox update install.
- Relaunch Roblox.
If the Store shows no update and error 280 remains, search for Roblox - Windows in the Store. Install that app if your Roblox copy uses a different Store listing.
3. Update from the app store on iPhone, iPad, Android, and Fire
Mobile Roblox updates through your device's store.
- Open the App Store, Google Play, or the Amazon Appstore.
- Search for Roblox.
- Tap Update if the button appears.
- Reopen Roblox after the installation finishes.
You can also enable automatic app updates to reduce the chance of hitting error 280 again.
4. Update ChromeOS before Roblox on a Chromebook
An older ChromeOS build can prevent the Roblox app from receiving a compatible update.
- Open Settings, then About ChromeOS.
- Select Check for updates, and restart if one installs.
- Open the Play Store and update Roblox.
- If Roblox stays stuck, end its process in the ChromeOS Task Manager, then reinstall it from the Play Store.
If the update will not install, do a clean reinstall
Old Roblox files can stop a replacement build from installing correctly. Remove them before installing a fresh copy.
5. Clean reinstall on Windows
A normal uninstall can leave local Roblox files behind. Remove that folder before reinstalling.
- Uninstall Roblox from Settings > Apps.
- Open Command Prompt.
- Type
cd AppData\Localand press Enter. - Type
rmdir /s Robloxand press Enter, then typeyto confirm. - Restart your PC and install Roblox from roblox.com/download.
6. Clean reinstall on Mac
Remove the installed app, then check that macOS allows the replacement to open.
- Quit Roblox completely.
- Open Applications and drag Roblox to the Trash, then empty the Trash.
- Install Roblox from roblox.com/download.
- Open System Settings, then Privacy & Security, and make sure Roblox is allowed to run.
7. Reboot and reinstall on mobile
Restarting and reinstalling clears an update that did not finish cleanly.
- Restart the device.
- Force-close Roblox and open it again.
- If error 280 remains, delete Roblox and reinstall it from your store.
- Set the device's date and time to automatic before reopening Roblox.
8. Try a different internet connection
Roblox also recommends another connection when the update still will not download.
- Switch to a phone hotspot or a different Wi-Fi network.
- Relaunch or reinstall Roblox on that connection.
- If the update works, finish the installation there before returning to your usual network.
