What Counts as a Gundam UC Unit in SD Gundam G Generation ETERNAL
The name is narrower than it sounds. Here, "Gundam UC" means Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn, not the whole Universal Century timeline, so the group covers Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn, Mobile Suit Gundam Narrative, the UC-MSV mobile suit variations and the Odaiba Unicorn Gundam statue version. Gundam units from other stories aren't part of it, even when they share the same timeline.
Units come in rarities from N up to UR, and some appear in more than one form. Unicorn Mode and Destroy Mode, for example, are separate units with their own cards, so treat each form as its own pick when you build a squad.
Attack, Durability and Support: How Unit Types Work
Every Gundam UC unit has one of three types, and the type sets its job in a squad. Attack units deal the main damage. Durability units can take hits meant for nearby allies, which the game calls support defense, and Support units can join their allies' attacks, which the game calls support attacks. Because each type does a different job, mixing them lets a squad hit hard while protecting the units that do the hitting.
How Terrain Decides Where a Gundam UC Unit Can Fight
Each unit has a rating for five kinds of terrain: Space, Air, Ground, Surface and Underwater. Each rating is either full strength, limited, or unable to sortie, and that last one means the unit can't be sent out on that terrain at all. A unit with no Space rating can't be deployed on a space map, so check the card before you plan a squad around one.
Most of the roster is rated at full strength on Space and on the Ground, which makes those two terrains the easiest to plan around. Very few units have an Air rating, so Air is the one to check first.
EX Units and Why Their Weapons Matter
Units marked (EX) are UR units that carry an EX weapon. That weapon can't miss, and damage resistance doesn't reduce its damage, which makes its hits more reliable than regular attacks. The EX units in this group are Unicorn Gundam (Destroy Mode) (EX), Unicorn Gundam (Destroy Mode / Awakened) (EX), Banshee Norn (Destroy Mode) (EX), Sinanju (EX), Narrative Gundam A-Packs (EX) and Unicorn Gundam 03 Phenex (Destroy Mode) (EX), and all of them come from Unit Assembly.
How to Get Gundam UC Units
Unit Assembly is the gacha draw, and it's where every EX unit comes from. Most of the roster, though, is made through Development. You build a unit from units you already own, plus Capital and special items, and each series has its own Development Diagram that lays out the path. Gundam Delta Kai and Narrative Gundam C-Packs (Awakened) also have UR versions made this way.
Stage and event rewards bring in units too, and some units can be captured during stages.
How Unit Abilities, Tags and Supporters Work Together
A squad is made of five unit-and-character pairs plus one Supporter, and the Supporter's Leader Skill boosts any unit that meets its conditions. Each Gundam UC unit also has Unit Abilities, which are passive boosts such as Increased ATK or an "Advantage" tied to a series. Passive means they're always active, so you don't need to trigger them in battle.
Units also carry tags, and some pilot and Supporter bonuses check for them. That means a tag can decide whether a unit gets a boost at all, so it's worth checking tags against the conditions before you build.
Which Gundam UC Units Are Worth Building
There's no single pick that fits every squad, so it helps to think in roles. For reliable damage, look at UR units with an EX weapon, such as the Attack-type Unicorn Gundam (Destroy Mode) (EX) and Unicorn Gundam 03 Phenex (Destroy Mode) (EX). For the front line, build a Durability unit and keep it close to the units it protects, since its support defense only works for nearby allies.
Support units suit a squad that attacks as a team, because they can join their allies' attacks. Whatever roles you pick, match the terrain ratings to the maps you play most, and check that your units' tags fit your Supporter's conditions.
FAQ
Do I need an EX unit to deal good damage?
No. Attack units handle the main damage whether or not they carry an EX weapon, so an EX unit is an option for more reliable hits rather than a must-have.
Why would I build a Durability unit if it doesn't deal the main damage?
Without one, hits aimed at your attackers land on them directly, so they can go down before they've done much. A Durability unit takes some of those hits, which keeps your damage dealers standing.
Should I choose my Supporter before my Gundam UC units?
It helps to. A Supporter only boosts units that meet its conditions, so look at those conditions first and then pick units whose tags match. Choosing the Supporter last can leave you with a boost that never applies to your units.
