Brotato is a top-down shooter where you play as a potato, fighting waves of enemies with weapons you buy between rounds. Items are the other half of your build. They are passive upgrades that change your stats for the rest of the run, such as max health, damage, speed, and luck, and most of them come with a trade-off. Once you know how Brotato items work, where to find them, and which ones suit your style, every shop visit gets easier.

What Brotato Items Do
Items are passive upgrades, so you don't aim or fire them. Once you pick one up, it stays on your character and adjusts your stats while your weapons handle the shooting. The stats they touch include max health, health regeneration (health that slowly refills), damage, range, speed, dodge (your chance to avoid a hit), luck, life steal (healing from the damage you deal), and critical hit chance (how often your hits land extra hard).
Most items help in one area and cost you in another. Alloy boosts several damage stats, Engineering (the stat that powers mines and turrets), and critical hit chance, but it takes 6% off your dodge. Alien Worm adds max health and regeneration, but it weakens the healing you get from food and crates. That's why a useful item for a tough build can be a poor fit for a fast one, so it's worth checking the trade-off before you buy.
Some items grow the longer you last. Grind's Magical Leaf gains bonuses at the end of every wave, so it gets stronger as the run goes on. Others look at what else you carry. Fairy gains regeneration for each different Tier I item you own and loses some for each Tier IV item, while Focus and Spider scale with the number of different weapons you carry.
A few only work in certain moments, such as Adrenaline when you dodge, Barricade, Chameleon, and Statue when you stand still, and Triangle of Power when you take damage. Those reward a specific way of playing, so they shine when you match them and do little when you don't.
Brotato Item Tiers Explained: Tier I to Tier IV
Every item belongs to one of four tiers, and the tier works as a rarity scale. Tier I items are the most common and the cheapest, while higher tiers cost more and take longer to show up in the shop.
Tier tells you how rare and pricey an item is, but not always how useful it will be. Landmines is a Tier I item that can matter more to your run than a pricier pick, so don't skip a cheap item just because of its tier.
How to Get Items in the Brotato Shop
The shop opens after every wave, and it's the main place to buy items and weapons. Each visit offers up to four slots, and each slot holds either a weapon or an item. The first two shops always include two weapons and two items, and shops three through five always include at least one weapon. After that, offers are random, though your character and the weapons you already own still shape what appears.
Tier II items can start showing up in the second shop, Tier III from the fourth, and Tier IV from the eighth. Until then, most offers are Tier I, which is why early runs lean so heavily on the cheapest items. Prices are paid in Materials, the game's currency, and they climb a little each wave, so an item you can afford now may cost more a few waves later.
Rerolling swaps the offers for a fresh set, and it costs Materials. Locking an item keeps it through rerolls and carries it into the next wave, and it keeps the price it had when you locked it. Locking is free and unlimited, so it's an easy way to hold on to something you want but can't afford yet.
Getting Items from Crates in Brotato
The shop isn't the only source. Enemies can drop crates during a wave, and a destroyed tree has about a 20% chance to drop one. You pick up a crate instead of buying it, and it gives you one item along with a small heal of 3 HP. Each extra crate in the same wave is less likely to drop than the one before.
Legendary Crates are the rare version. They drop from tougher enemies called Elites on Danger 2 and higher, and from the wave 20 boss, and every one contains a Tier IV item. Picking one up restores 100 HP, so it's a big heal as well as a strong item. Some items, like Bag, add materials each time you pick up a crate, so crates pay off in more than one way.
Item Unlocks and Limits in Brotato
Not every item is open from the start. Some stay locked until you win a run with a specific character, such as Giant Belt with Jack or Compass with Explorer. Others unlock when you reach a goal, like 70% dodge.
Even unlocked items can be capped. Giant Belt and Regeneration Potion can each be held only once, Bag can be held up to three times, and Metal Detector up to 20 times.
The Abyssal Terrors expansion, a paid add-on, brings its own set of items. Each one is marked as Abyssal Terrors content, so you can tell it apart from the base game's items.
Best Brotato Items to Pick First
No single item suits every run, but a few are easy to build around. Grind's Magical Leaf is a strong all-round pick, since each wave adds max health, regeneration, and life steal, and those bonuses stack. Regeneration Potion suits a healing-focused run, because it adds regeneration and doubles it once you drop below half health.
If you'd rather deal damage than soak it up, Landmines drops a mine every 12 seconds that blasts nearby enemies, and its damage scales with Engineering. Giant Belt suits critical hit builds, since each crit deals bonus damage based on an enemy's current health, though it does far less against bosses and elites. Pocket Factory boosts Engineering and drops a turret every time you destroy a tree, which makes it a natural fit for gadget-heavy builds.
Alien Worm's bonuses are appealing, but its penalty adds up fast. Three copies stop regular fruit from healing you at all.
FAQ
Can you sell items in Brotato?
Sort of. Items you pick up from crates can be recycled in the shop for materials, and the base payout is 25% of the item's current price. A Recycling Machine raises that return to 60%, and playing as Entrepreneur adds more on top, up to 85%. Because payouts follow the current price, rising prices raise them and Coupons lower them.
Does Luck help you find better items?
Yes. Luck raises the odds of higher-tier offers in the shop and in crates: 50 Luck multiplies those odds by 1.5 and 100 Luck doubles them, up to a ceiling for each tier. Luck also makes enemies drop more consumables and makes each one more likely to be a crate.
Can you reroll the shop for free?
Yes, with Dangerous Bunny, which gives one free reroll in each shop for every copy you own. Paid rerolls have no cap, but each one costs more than the last within the same shop, and the price resets with the next shop. Spyglass makes paid rerolls cheaper, cutting their price by 25% per copy.
How can you make items cheaper in Brotato?
Coupons are the most direct way. Each one takes 5% off shop prices, and the discounts stack. Your character matters too, since Baby and Entrepreneur pay less at the shop, while Gangster, Glutton, Mutant, and Saver pay more.
