In Red Dead Revolver's Showdown versus mode, you start with only some of the characters. The rest open through a story chapter rating, a Bounty Hunter mode objective, a shop purchase or one special challenge. Most locked characters can be bought, but some have no shop route at all, so the chapter rating or challenge is the only way in.

Available from the start
Ready from the start of the game. Nothing to earn or buy.
Good rating on a story chapter
Earn this rating on the story chapter itself. Bounty Hunter mode doesn't count here, and none of these characters has a shop item.
Excellent rating on a story chapter
Earn this rating on the story chapter itself. Most of these characters also have a shop item, so you can buy one instead of replaying the chapter.
Bounty Hunter mode objective
Bounty Hunter mode opens after you finish the story. Beat the mission and finish its objective, or buy the shop item instead.
Shop items only
No free route. Buy the item during its window, or the character stays locked.
Showdown challenge
Not a rating or a shop item. Spend at least six minutes on fire in one match, then win that match.
Which Characters Are Hardest to Get
Manny Quinn is the hardest. He has no shop item and no story rating, so the Showdown challenge is his only route. Mr. Kelley comes next. His only route is an Excellent rating on Chapter 24, Battle Finale, and nothing in the shop can stand in for it.
The shop-only characters are hard for a different reason. They have no free route, so the shop is their only way in. Most items get one window. Slade's Potbelly Stove has five chances, and Kid Cougar's Handkerchief has two. If you miss every available window, the character stays locked.
Manny Quinn's Showdown Challenge
Spend at least six minutes on fire in one Showdown match, then win that match. The time has to add up inside a single match, so minutes from different matches don't count together.
The recommended setup is The Ranch, one of the unlockable Showdown levels, with Sheriff O'Grady, who starts with Fire Bottles. The Ranch opens after Chapter 11. You'll need O'Grady unlocked first, and his Family Photo costs $650 at the start of Chapter 4. For the weapons, see Red Dead Revolver weapons.
That setup is the easy route, not a requirement. Any Showdown match that meets the challenge counts.
Chapters That Unlock More Than One Character
These chapters each unlock more than one character, so they're the ones to plan around.
| Chapter | Good rating | Excellent rating | Bounty Hunter mode objective |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chapter 2, Bounty Hunter | Bloody Tom | Big Oaf Whitney | Curly Shaw |
| Chapter 3, Ugly Streetfight | Ugly Chris | Twiggy Phelps | |
| Chapter 5, Railroaded | Rico Pedrosa | Sheriff Bartlett | |
| Chapter 6, Carnival Life | Pig Josh | Fidgit | |
| Chapter 8, Rogue Valley | Cooper | Bad Bessie | Sissy Fess |
| Chapter 11, Range War | Holstein Hal | Smitty | |
| Chapter 12, Saloon Fight | Dan | Sam | Natalie |
| Chapter 15, Bear Mountain | Shadow Wolf | Standing Snake | Grizzly |
| Chapter 19, Hell Pass | Buffalo | Gabriel Navarro |
Chapter 2 is the trickiest. Its name is Bounty Hunter, the same as the Bounty Hunter mode, but the story chapter and the mode are separate unlocks. A Good rating on the chapter gets Bloody Tom, an Excellent rating gets Big Oaf Whitney, and Curly Shaw comes from the mode's objective on that chapter.
Chapter 12 splits the same way. A Good rating there gets Dan, and an Excellent rating gets Sam.
Paying Instead of Replaying
Good-rating characters have no shop item, so the chapter rating is the only way to unlock them. Most Excellent-rating characters have a shop backup, and the cheapest run $500.
The catch is timing. Each backup sits in a shop window, and most windows come around only once. Check the window before you spend the money, and don't count on the item coming back.
Shop-Only Characters by Story Window
Here are the shop-only windows in story order:
- Start of Chapter 4: Sheriff O'Grady, Family Photo, $650.
- After Chapter 7 or 8: Kid Cougar, Handkerchief, $50, from the Brimstone Tailor.
- After Chapter 10: Udo Kang, Blanket, $50, from the Brimstone General Store.
- Start of Chapter 14: Red Jr., Sand Painting, $1,300.
- During Chapter 16: Katie O'Grady, Horseshoe, $1,050, from Skeleton's secret shop. That's the only place she's sold.
- After Chapter 22: Nate Harlow, Pan, $1,800, from the Brimstone General Store.
Slade's Potbelly Stove, $1,450, is the most forgiving buy. It sells from the Brimstone Gun Shop after Chapters 7, 8, 10 or 22, and at the start of Chapter 14, which gives it more windows than any other shop-only item.
Buying every shop-only character costs $6,350 in total, so budget for it across the story.
FAQ
What is the most expensive character to buy?
Governor Griffon's Deed To Mine costs $2,500, the highest price on the roster. He can also come from an Excellent rating on Chapter 27, so the shop is a backup there. Mr. Black's Embalming Tools ($2,200) and General Diego's General's Stripes ($2,000) come next.
Are Red Dead Redemption or Red Dead Online characters in Showdown here?
No. This roster covers the Showdown mode in Red Dead Revolver only. Characters from Red Dead Redemption and Red Dead Online aren't part of it.
Which versions are covered?
The routes cover the original 2004 release on PS2 and Xbox.
