All 138 Journal Entries in Red Dead Revolver and How to Unlock Them

Updated on October 12, 2026 (11 days ago)

Sheriff Bartlett's Journal fills in as you play. Each entry covers a character, weapon, item, group or place. Entries start open or unlock through story progress, Excellent ratings, Bounty Hunter replays, shop purchases or Manny Quinn's Showdown challenge. The shops take the most planning, because some items sell only for a short window.

Heroes of the Frontier

0/5

None of these needs a shop. A few open from the start, and the rest wait on story chapters.

Side Arms

0/8

The shop routes in this group all run through the Brimstone Gun Shop at some point, so that's where to save for them.

Ranged Weapons

0/12

Some of these guns can be picked up in a level or bought later in Brimstone, so a missed drop is not the end of it.

Ugly Chris' Gang

0/5

Prof. Perry's Peculiarities

0/7

Outlaws in 12 States

0/16

This group has more Bounty Hunter replays than any other, so keep the mode in mind when you plan your chapters.

How Journal Entries Unlock

Entries open in a few different ways, and many can open in more than one.

  • Open from the start. Some heroes, gang members and the Old Pistol are in the journal from the first moment.
  • Story progress. Finish the named chapter. Weapon entries usually ask you to pick the gun up in a level during that chapter, then finish it. For the guns themselves, see Red Dead Revolver weapons.
  • Excellent rating. Finish the chapter with an Excellent rating. That means hitting all but one of its targets: accuracy, damage taken, time and best combo.
  • Bounty Hunter replays. Bounty Hunter mode stays locked until you finish the story once. After that, replay the chapter the entry names and meet its objective.
  • Shop purchases. Buy the item at the named shop while the entry's window is open.
  • Showdown. Manny Quinn is the only entry tied to a Showdown match. Spend at least 6 minutes on fire in total during one match, and win that match.

Shop Entries and What They Cost

Prices run from $6 for Bandito's Ruined Poncho up to $3,000 for the High Caliber Rifle. These cheap picks sell at the start of a chapter, so grab them when you pass through:

  • Ruined Poncho for Bandito, $6, at the start of Chapter 2
  • Gutted Bible for Father Driscoll, $7, at the start of Chapter 4
  • Shovel for Loaf Whitney, $13, at the start of Chapter 3

Most shop entries sell in Brimstone's General Store, Gun Shop, Tailor, Saloon and Bank. Each Brimstone entry names the chapter after which its item is for sale there. The priciest ones open late. The High Caliber Rifle and Governor Griffon's Deed To Mine, $2,500 at the Brimstone Bank, both open after Chapter 22, so save up before then.

Limited Shop Windows

Some items are for sale only at a chapter's start, or only during one chapter, with no later window. Miss a one-time shop window and you'll need another playthrough for another chance. Chapter 14 at Sunset Canyon and Chapter 20 at Fort Diego hold most of these, so arrive with cash.

Shop windowShop-only entriesPrice
Chapter 2 startBandito (Ruined Poncho)$6
Chapter 3 startLoaf Whitney (Shovel)$13
Chapter 4 startFather Driscoll (Gutted Bible), Sheriff O'Grady (Family Photo)$7 to $650
Chapter 14 startLonghorn Luke (Dirty Lasso), Fire Bottle, Young Red Harlow (Sand Painting), Black Elk Tribe (Mask), Percy Merriweather (Ledger), Private Chavez (Infantry Hat), Sergeant Marquez (Scalps)$50 to $1,300
Skeleton's secret shop, Chapter 16Snake Oil during the chapter, Katie O'Grady (Horseshoe) at its start$400 to $1,050
Chapter 20 startThe Lion, Private Hanson (Fillings), The Duellist (Keys), Chief Running Moon (Dreamcatcher), Gabby Brennan (White Flag)$50 to $750

At the start of Chapter 16, turn around and speak to the skeleton to open the secret shop. Katie O'Grady's Horseshoe costs $1,050 at the start; Snake Oil costs $400 and stays available during the chapter.

Several entries in these windows also open another way, through an Excellent rating or a Bounty Hunter replay, so missing the shop doesn't lock you out of them. Each entry in the Chapter 21 start shop works this way: Smitty, Standing Snake, Holstein Hal and Colonel Daren. The easy miss is heading straight for the next story chapter and skipping the shop.

Excellent Ratings and Bounty Hunter Replays

Most Excellent rating entries also sell in shops, so the shop is a backup if you miss the rating. Mr. Kelley is the exception. He has no shop route, so the Excellent rating on Chapter 24 is his only way in.

Bounty Hunter replays run from Chapter 1 through Chapter 15. Chapter 2 shares the name Bounty Hunter, so read each route closely. Some entries mean the story chapter, and others mean the mode. Bounty Hunter covers the mode itself.

Frontier Places and Story Routes

Most Frontier Places open when you finish the chapter that takes you there. Brimstone is the twist: finish Chapter 5: Railroaded, leave town, then start Chapter 6: Carnival Life.

Fairgrounds has a story route and a shop route. Finish Chapter 6, or buy Uniform for $1,000 at the Brimstone Tailor after Chapter 8 or 10. The Uniform purchase also opens the Fairground Showdown level, found on Red Dead Revolver Showdown levels.

The Mansion has its own sequence: finish Chapter 25: The Siege for the Gardens, then Chapter 26: House of Cards for the Mansion Interior.

If you need the chapter order, the Red Dead Revolver story missions cover it.

FAQ

Q.

Can I fill the journal without buying anything?

No. Many entries only open at a shop, so story progress, Excellent ratings and Bounty Hunter replays can't fill the journal on their own.

Q.

Does buying an entry unlock anything else?

Sometimes. Some purchases also open a Showdown character, such as Clyde Slade's Potbelly Stove. The Red Dead Revolver Showdown characters cover the characters themselves.

Q.

What if I miss a chapter-start shop?

Only shop-only entries from a chapter start are at risk. Entries that also open through story, an Excellent rating or a Bounty Hunter replay still unlock that way. The Revolver shows how a second chance works: it sells at the start of Chapter 3 or 6, then again at the Brimstone Gun Shop after several chapters.

Q.

Are the Frontier Battles profiles part of the journal?

No. The Frontier Battles profiles sit after the last journal entry, but they aren't journal entries and don't appear here.

Q.

Do these routes match newer versions?

These routes follow the original PS2 and Xbox release. Later re-releases may differ in some routes or prices, so if your version doesn't match, trust what the game shows.
