Hobbies and pastimes give GTA 5 Story Mode plenty to do between robberies. Sports, races, flight training, parachuting, shooting practice, bounty work, and property jobs unlock as the story moves forward. Some advance 100% completion, while the optional ones trade checklist progress for cash, vehicles, outfits, or a change of pace.

How Story Mode tracks hobbies
Story Mode sometimes treats a whole activity family as one progress unit. A shooting-range weapon category only clears after you earn the required medals inside it, while Helicopter Jumps and BASE Jumps each group several named jumps. The same rule keeps wildlife photos, stock-car heats, and stunt-plane trials inside their parent activity.
Only activities marked Required advance the Hobbies and Pastimes part of 100% completion. Bail Bonds, Arms Trafficking, Hunting, Yoga, and other optional work can still pay cash or unlock rewards. They simply do not move that checklist.
Unlock order and repeat play
Many hobbies open after a named story mission. Race families then progress in sequence, so completing one event can reveal the next. Maude introduces Trevor's Bail Bonds, while buying McKenzie Field Hangar opens his air and ground trafficking work.
Repeatable activities can be played again, but the reward may change. Parachute jumps pay less after the first completion, medals stay attached to their own rules, and the stock-car prize cycle continues after its main reward run. Replay is not a magic cash printer, which feels unusually responsible for Los Santos.
Edition-limited activities
Wildlife Photography Challenge and Stock Car Racing need the Enhanced returning-player entitlement tied to a legacy PS3 or Xbox 360 save. Stunt Plane Time Trials came with Special or Collector's Edition access on the original hardware and appears in Enhanced releases. Check the edition before searching an older save for an activity that was never shipped there.
Common mistakes
- GTA Online has a separate Flight School with different lessons. Do not use its goals or rewards for Story Mode.
- Railgun bonus shooting challenges do not create another Hobbies and Pastimes progress unit.
- The Decline belongs with BASE Jumps even though its starting trip uses a Frogger.
- Shift Work is Hao's contact mission and the first South Los Santos street race. It is the same race entry, not a duplicate activity.
- The Coyote Cross Country Triathlon temporarily closes to Michael and Trevor between Minor Turbulence and Monkey Business.
- Wildlife photographs, hunting challenges, and race heats are goals inside their activity, not separate hobbies.
Buying McKenzie Field Hangar opens Trevor's air and ground jobs. The air route uses a Cuban 800, while the ground route uses the Dune Buggy.
Maude sends Trevor after targets once her Special Bonds introduction is available. Returning a target alive pays more than killing them.
Friends Reunited opens Story Mode training at LSIA. Earn bronze or better in each lesson; GTA Online uses a different lesson set.
Hunting, Wildlife Photography, Stunt Plane Time Trials, and Stock Car Racing use their own internal goals. Edition restrictions matter for the photography and racing bonuses.
Dom's Risk Assessment opens the helicopter and BASE jump groups. The Decline counts as a BASE jump, and repeat completions pay less cash.
FAQ
Does this include GTA Online activities?
No. It covers Story Mode hobbies and pastimes. GTA Online activities, including its separate Flight School lessons, use different unlocks and rewards.
Why are individual jumps, heats, and shooting challenges grouped together?
Story Mode tracks them as internal parts of a Hobbies and Pastimes unit. You finish the named goals inside that unit instead of earning separate progress for each subtask.
Which activities count toward 100%?
Activities marked Required advance the Hobbies and Pastimes part of 100% completion. Optional activities can still pay cash or unlock rewards, but they do not move that part of the checklist.
Is Shift Work a hobby or a Strangers & Freaks mission?
It is both Hao's contact mission and the first South Los Santos street race. Completing Shift Work handles that race entry instead of creating a second activity.
How do Bail Bonds and Arms Trafficking unlock?
Maude introduces Trevor's Bail Bonds after Mr. Philips. Arms Trafficking begins after Trevor buys McKenzie Field Hangar following Nervous Ron.
Are Enhanced-only hobbies available on every GTA 5 release?
No. Wildlife Photography and Stock Car Racing need the Enhanced returning-player entitlement tied to a legacy save. Stunt Plane Time Trials also have Special, Collector's, or Enhanced edition restrictions.
