Animals give GTA 5 Story Mode more than background noise. Trevor hunts wildlife in the Chiliad wilderness, Franklin photographs specific species, and Enhanced players can use Peyote Plants to take control of animal forms. Some wildlife never appears on the original PS3 and Xbox 360 releases, so edition matters before you start searching.

Edition differences and Peyote forms
Original Story Mode has dogs, farm animals, wild mammals, birds, fish, and the hostile Tiger Shark. Enhanced and Expanded & Enhanced releases add more breeds and wildlife, including cats, rabbits, dolphins, whales, and other sea animals. If one of those species never appears on an older console, the countryside has not personally betrayed you.
Story Mode Peyote Plants also belong to the Enhanced release family. That means an animal such as a Deer or Rottweiler can exist in every edition even though transforming into it needs a later release. Humpback Whale cannot be played through Peyote, while Pigeon exists as a Peyote form without a normal free-roam spawn.
Hunting and wildlife photography
Trevor can hunt Boar, Coyote, Deer, and Mountain Lion after Fair Game. Birds also appear in hunting challenges as a general target rather than separate named hunts. Hunting uses the names Elk for Deer and Cougar for Mountain Lion, but they are the same animals.
Franklin's Wildlife Photography Challenge is an Enhanced Story Mode activity. It asks for specific dogs, farm animals, birds, and predators. Photographing Chop counts for the Rottweiler target, so you do not need to stalk every dog walker in Los Santos like a suspicious pet detective.
Common mistakes
- Keep GTA Online mansion pets, online Peyote events, and the online photography challenge out of Story Mode searches.
- Chop is a named companion. Rottweiler is the breed that matters for wildlife and photography.
- Chicken may appear as Hen, Labrador Retriever as Retriever, Deer as Elk, and Mountain Lion as Cougar in activity text.
- A Peyote form tells you what the plant can transform you into. It does not identify the plant's location.
- Sasquatch belongs to a special encounter and golden Peyote. It does not roam the wilderness like ordinary wildlife.
FAQ
Does this include GTA Online animals?
No. It covers GTA 5 Story Mode wildlife across the supported releases. Online peyote events, mansion pets, the Cayo Perico panther, and the later online photography challenge stay out.
Why is Chop not listed as his own species?
Chop is a named Story Mode companion, not a separate wildlife species. He is a Rottweiler, and photographing him satisfies Franklin's Rottweiler target.
Why does Pigeon appear if it does not spawn normally?
Pigeon is an Enhanced air Peyote form even though it has no normal free-roam wildlife spawn in Story Mode. You encounter it through the hallucination system rather than by watching city streets.
Are Deer and Mountain Lion the same as Elk and Cougar?
Yes. Trevor's hunting activity calls them Elk and Cougar. Elsewhere, the same animals are called Deer and Mountain Lion.
Is Sasquatch a normal animal in Los Santos?
No. Sasquatch connects the playable golden-Peyote form with The Last One encounter. It is a special Story Mode presence, not a standard wildlife spawn.
Does an animal's Peyote form show where to find the plant?
No. Land, air, water, and golden describe the type of transformation. The plants themselves have separate locations around San Andreas.
