How to Start the Dead Rails Quest and Find the Phantom Key
The rest of the quest depends on the Phantom Key, so start there. You get it from a mysterious stain in the starting area of a Dead Rails run.
- Enter Dead Rails and look around the starting area for the mysterious stain.
- Interact with the stain to get the Phantom Key.
- Walk to the red Phantom Lock near your train and use the key on it.
The lock opens a portal to the Phantom Train, where the rest of the quest takes place. Expect enemies once you're aboard, so grab a weapon and some ammo before you step through.
How to Open the Bank Vault and Unlock the Next Section of the Phantom Train
The Phantom Train is split into sections behind locked doors, and the vault at the bank holds the key to the next one. Getting into the vault takes a few steps.
- Head to the bank and defeat the banker to get the vault combination.
- Open the vault with the combination.
- Take the key from inside the vault.
- Use the key to unlock the next section of the train.
The key from the vault is what gets you through the next locked door, so don't leave the bank without it.
How to Beat Goliath at Stillwater Prison and Finish the Quest
The next locked door leads to Stillwater Prison. Clear the enemies there before you go any further.
- Clear the enemies at Stillwater Prison.
- Pull the key out of the stone to trigger Goliath.
- Defeat Goliath and collect the key.
- Take the key back through the train and keep going until you reach the Phantom Conductor.
- Speak to the Phantom Conductor to finish the quest and leave the Phantom Train.
Pulling the key starts the fight, so have your weapon and ammo ready before you reach for it. Keep your distance where you can, and watch for his attacks so you can dodge them.
How to Claim the Cowboy Hat of the Dead at The Hollow Hub
The hat is a separate claim, made in The Hollow hub after the quest is done. Head back to the hub and go to the Dead Rails room.
- Leave Dead Rails and go back to The Hollow hub.
- Take the cinema elevator up to Floor 3.
- Find the Dead Rails room.
- Interact with the Cowboy Hat of the Dead display.
- Equip the hat from your avatar items.
