How to Fix Roblox Error Code 285

Updated on July 22, 2026 (about 5 hours ago)

You got kicked out of a game with "Client initiated disconnect. (Error Code: 285)". The wording makes it sound like you pressed a disconnect button. You did not.

The code does not indicate a ban. Moderation messages appear separately, while 285 interrupts a game that was already running. Start by rejoining before changing anything on your device.

Roblox's official error code list does not document 285. Roblox staff on the developer forum describe it as a "player triggered connection closure", so the code tells you that the app ended its connection. It does not identify the underlying cause by itself.

#FixWhen it helps
1Rejoin the gameThe previous server is no longer available
2Check Roblox's status pageRoblox services are having trouble
3Restart your router or switch networksThe disconnect follows you across games
4Turn off your VPN or proxyThe routed connection is unstable
5Check firewall and antivirus accessSecurity software is blocking Roblox
6Update or reinstall RobloxEarlier checks did not solve it

How to Fix Roblox Error Code 285

What "client initiated disconnect" means

"Client" means the Roblox app on your device. Error 285 records that the app closed its connection to the game server. A connection drop on your side can trigger that closure, but a server that shuts down or stops responding can lead to the same result.

The possible causes fit into two broad groups:

  • Your connection or device. Wi-Fi can drop, a VPN or proxy can interrupt the route, or security software can block Roblox's traffic.
  • The game server or Roblox. A server can shut down for an update, fail, or run out of memory. In one case, Roblox staff confirmed that an 80-player server ran out of memory after all connected players received 285. That is a documented example, not proof that memory is behind every 285 message.

Use the pattern around the disconnect as a clue, not a diagnosis:

What happenedWhat to test first
Only you were disconnectedRejoin, then test your connection if it repeats
Many players were disconnected togetherRejoin and check Roblox status
It appeared while joiningTry the same game again in a new server
It repeats across several gamesTest another network and check Roblox status

If several players disappeared together, a server-side problem is more likely. Rejoin first instead of changing device settings.

If your message says "Lost connection to the game server" instead, the steps for Error Code 277 cover that documented disconnect.

How to fix Roblox Error Code 285

Work from the simplest check downward. Stop when the game stays connected.

1. Rejoin the game

Open the same experience and join again. Roblox may place you in a different server automatically, or you can choose another available server from the experience page.

A successful rejoin only shows that the new connection works. It does not prove whether the earlier disconnect came from your device, the route, or the previous server.

2. Check if Roblox is having trouble

If rejoining fails, open the official Roblox status page. A listed service problem means device troubleshooting is unlikely to help until Roblox restores the service.

3. Restart your router or test another network

Use this test when 285 repeats across more than one experience.

  1. Unplug your router for about 30 seconds.
  2. Plug it back in and wait for the connection to return.
  3. Rejoin Roblox.
  4. If 285 returns, test a different trusted network, such as a mobile hotspot.

If Roblox stays connected on the second network, focus on the original connection or router.

4. Turn off your VPN or proxy

A VPN or proxy changes the route between your device and Roblox. Disable it temporarily, then rejoin the same experience. If the disconnect stops, leave that service off while playing or try a different endpoint.

5. Check firewall and antivirus access

Make sure your firewall allows Roblox to use the network. If your antivirus has separate app or network controls, check Roblox there too. Avoid disabling security software completely when an app-specific permission is available.

6. Update or reinstall Roblox

Save reinstalling for last because Error 285 is often a connection or server symptom. Update Roblox through your device's app store, or relaunch it on PC so it can install an available update.

If the error still repeats, uninstall Roblox and download a fresh installer from roblox.com/download. On Windows, the cleanup steps for the "unexpected error" crash can help when a normal reinstall leaves damaged files behind.

If Roblox closes instead of showing a disconnect message, use the checks for Roblox closing on its own on PC.

If it only happens in one game

Repeated 285 messages in one experience point more strongly to that experience or its servers, especially when other Roblox games stay connected. Rejoin once, then try again later if the same experience keeps dropping you.

For a different message or code, use the Roblox error codes and fixes list to match the exact wording.

FAQ

Q.

Is Roblox Error Code 285 a ban?

No. Error 285 records a closed game-server connection and does not indicate an account ban. A moderation action uses a separate message.

Q.

Why does it say "client initiated" when I did nothing?

The "client" is the Roblox app on your device. The code records that the app closed its connection, but it does not prove whether the trigger was your network, the route, or a server that stopped responding.

Q.

Why did everyone in the server get error 285 at once?

A shared server-side problem is likely when many players disconnect together. Roblox staff have confirmed one 285 incident caused by an out-of-memory server, but other server failures can look similar. Try joining again and check Roblox status.
