Fishing in Grand Blue is an optional Life Skill, but it pays off in several ways: catches can be sold for Gold, kept as cooking ingredients, and used to build Fishing EXP and profession levels. The awkward part is the first trip to the dock. You need to find Ricky for the starter kit, then learn a three-part minigame before the first fish counts.
Grand Blue is in Early Access, and the official experience page warns that bugs and lag are possible. Use the shop and crafting prompts in your server as the final word when a price or recipe differs. This guide takes you from Ricky's shop through the Carp challenge, the Carbon and Fiberglass Rod route, and the Fishing skill rewards.
How to Start Fishing in Grand Blue
Begin in Anchor Town and walk to the docks. Ricky runs the fishing shop there. Buy a Wooden Rod and Worm Bait, then equip both before you step up to the water. The Wooden Rod is commonly listed at about 68 Gold, although a rack or another build may show 75 Gold, so check Ricky's live price instead of arriving with an exact budget.

Your starter setup is simple:
- Speak to Ricky at the Anchor Town docks.
- Purchase the Wooden Rod and Worm Bait.
- Equip the rod and put the bait on as the game requests.
- Stand beside ocean water or a pond and start the fishing interaction.
If the rod is in your inventory but the cast does not begin, check that the rod and bait are both equipped. The Grand Blue NPC locations guide can help you orient yourself around Anchor Town before you spend your Gold.
How to Catch Fish in Grand Blue
The desktop fishing loop has three distinct phases. The first cast sets a timing grade, the second interaction lures the fish, and the final bar determines whether you land it. On desktop, the interaction is documented as left click or M1; use the live prompt if your input labels differ.
| Phase | What you do | What success looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Cast | Hold and release left click/M1 to cast. | The cast finishes with a timing grade and moves into the lure phase. |
| Lure | Click the on-screen Shake circles as they appear. | The fish bites and the reel bar opens. |
| Reel | Hold M1 to move the reel bar to the right. Release to let it move back left, and keep the fish marker inside the zone. | The progress meter fills and the catch enters your inventory. |

The reel phase is about controlled corrections rather than holding the button forever. Holding M1 moves the bar one way; releasing gives it room to move back, so alternate those actions to keep the fish marker in the green zone. If the marker stays outside until the meter drains, the attempt is a miss and you need to cast again.
Where to Fish in Grand Blue and What to Do With Fish
You can fish in ocean water and town ponds, and the species available can depend on the zone. For Fisherman Jack's early challenge, use the pond in Anchor Town and look specifically for a Carp.
Once a catch is in your inventory, decide what you need more:
- Gold: Take fish to the Merchant at the Anchor Town harbor and sell them.
- Cooking supplies: Keep the fish and take it to the kitchen in Maple Village. The Grand Blue cooking guide uses Any Fish for Grilled Fish, so a catch does not have to be sold just because it is not part of Jack's challenge.
- Fishing progress: Continue landing catches to earn Fishing EXP and advance the Fishing profession. That progress supplies skill points and unlocks the level milestones later in this guide.
Keep the Carp needed for Jack separate from the fish you plan to sell. Turning it in is the step that puts the Carbon Rod on your progression route.
Grand Blue Fishing Rod Progression
The useful route is Wooden Rod → Carbon Rod → Fiberglass Rod → Silver Line Rod. Each step asks for a different kind of preparation, so start the next requirement while your current rod still works.
| Rod | How it becomes available | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Wooden Rod | Buy it from Ricky at the Anchor Town docks. | Starter rod; the reported price is about 68 Gold, but use Ricky's live shop prompt. |
| Carbon Rod | Complete Fisherman Jack's challenge by catching one Carp and turning it in. | You can earn it early, but Fishing Level 15 is required to equip it. |
| Fiberglass Rod | Sail to Maple Village and buy it from Merry in the Marine Dealership/dock building. | Buy a Rowboat from Captain Jones first; budget about 2,200–2,500 Gold for Fiberglass. |
| Silver Line Rod | Craft it at a furnace after the later rod requirements are met. | Inspect the displayed recipe; level and material requirements can change between Early Access builds. |
Complete Fisherman Jack's Carp challenge
Fisherman Jack is on the Anchor Town docks. Accept his challenge, fish in the Anchor Town pond until you catch one Carp, and return to Jack to turn it in. The Carbon Rod is the reward. Because the reward can be earned before you can use it, doing this challenge early lets you keep Fishing EXP moving with the Wooden Rod and switch immediately when you reach Fishing Level 15.

If Jack's objective is not complete after a catch, check the fish name before selling anything. The requirement is one Carp from the Anchor Town pond, then a turn-in at Jack, rather than simply reaching a Fishing level.
Sail from Anchor Town to Merry's Fiberglass shop
The Fiberglass route starts before you leave the first island:
- Go to Anchor Town Beach and enter Captain Jack's Sea Sailer Shop.
- Speak to Captain Jones, the Rowboat vendor inside the shop.
- Buy the Rowboat. The reported price is 48 Gold, but confirm Captain Jones's current prompt because this is a live-build value.
- Sail to Maple Village.
- Find Merry in the Marine Dealership/dock building and check her rod menu.
Reports place the Fiberglass Rod at about 2,200–2,500 Gold. Treat that as a planning range, then follow the amount Merry actually displays. Do not search for Merry in Anchor Town; the boat trip is the handoff that gets you to the second island and the correct dealership.

Check the furnace before farming for Silver Line
Silver Line is the later crafting goal. The exact Silver Line recipe can vary by build. You may see Fishing Level 50, one Fiberglass Rod, and 10 Silver Bars listed, so open the furnace and follow the recipe it displays before you spend time gathering materials.

This makes Silver Line a destination after Fiberglass rather than a reason to delay the early route. Use the Wooden Rod to start, bank Jack's reward, equip Carbon at Level 15, and save for Merry while you continue to level.
Best Grand Blue Fishing Skills and Level Rewards
Fishing skill points open six branches: Lucky Cast, Quick Bait, Deft Hands, Steady Bar, Composure, and Sure Grip. You do not need to follow a universal build, but Steady Bar is the most consistently supported first pick because it enlarges the reel bar and gives you more room to keep the marker inside the zone.
Choose the next point based on what is making you miss. Composure is the more forgiving, lower-drain option, while Sure Grip improves reeling speed. If the marker keeps escaping, use the control or reduced-drain option in your live skill menu; if you can hold the zone and want catches to finish sooner, choose Sure Grip. Read the live descriptions for Lucky Cast, Quick Bait, and Deft Hands before spending the remaining points.
Fishing levels also pay out milestone rewards:
| Fishing level | Milestone | Gold | Celestial Coins | Extra reward |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | Novice Angler | 500 | 100 | None |
| 25 | Adept | 1,500 | 250 | None |
| 50 | Expert | 4,000 | 500 | None |
| 75 | Master | 8,000 | 1,000 | None |
| 100 | Grandmaster | 15,000 | 2,500 | Master Angler title |
These rewards give you a reason to keep fishing after you have the rod you want. If you are just starting, buy the Wooden setup from Ricky and learn the reel bar; if Jack's Carp challenge is available, finish it before you leave Anchor Town. At Level 15, equip Carbon, then use the Rowboat and Maple Village route when you can meet Merry's displayed price. Once Fiberglass is yours, keep leveling and let the furnace tell you exactly when Silver Line is ready.
