Oxygen Not Included is a colony survival game where you direct a crew of Duplicants, the workers who dig, build and need to breathe. Everything in its world is made of elements, the basic substances that fill each square of the map. They come as solids like rock and metal, liquids like water and oil, and gases like oxygen and steam, and your colony digs, pumps and converts them to keep running. Heat, weight and pressure decide how each one moves, mixes and changes form, so learning them is the key to keeping your colony alive.

How Elements Change Form
Every element has temperatures where it changes form. Heat a solid past its melting point and it becomes a liquid, heat that liquid further and it turns into a gas, and cooling reverses the whole process. Sand, for example, melts into molten glass when it gets hot enough, and steam condenses back into water once it cools. The listed temperatures are a little early, too, since changes happen about 3 degrees past the number shown.
These changes have real effects on a base. A liquid or gas that changes form inside a pipe can crack it, and heat moves from tile to tile, so a hot room warms the rooms beside it.
Solids: Rock, Metal and Building Materials
Solids make up the ground, walls and ore veins of each asteroid. When a Duplicant digs out a solid tile, half of its material is destroyed and the other half is left as loose debris that can be moved.
The everyday solids are stone types like sandstone, igneous rock and obsidian, along with sand and dirt. Metals such as iron come from specific biomes and asteroid types, and the rarest solids can only be reached through space exploration.
Liquids: Water, Oil and How They Flow
Liquids follow gravity, spreading across flat floors, through open doors and down ladders. Only one liquid can fill a tile at a time, and liquids don't mix inside a tile, so they settle into layers by weight. That is how oil can end up sinking under water. Liquids also can't exist in tiny amounts, and anything under about 10 grams simply disappears.
Weight matters once liquid piles up. A tile holding more than 35 percent of its usual mass per tile can flood nearby buildings and drown critters, and stacked liquid presses on the tiles below it. Overloaded tiles crack and leak, and can eventually break.
Gases: Breathable Air and Layering
Gases spread out to fill whatever holds them, and unlike liquids they always move into nearby empty space. Lighter gases rise above heavier ones, and hot gas rises while cold gas sinks, so a room's air separates into layers over time. This is why carbon dioxide, which Duplicants breathe out, collects low while oxygen floats higher.
Only oxygen and polluted oxygen count as breathable. Air holding less than 50 grams of oxygen per tile is unbreathable, and between 50 and 300 grams it can be breathed but still stresses Duplicants. Polluted oxygen technically qualifies, but breathing it gives Duplicants the Yucky Lungs debuff, which a Deodorizer can clean up.
How to Get Elements in Oxygen Not Included
Digging is the most basic source, since it releases the materials held in solid tiles. Pipes then carry liquids and gases between your buildings.
The map supplies a lot more. Geysers and vents release a specific element from time to time, such as water, steam or chlorine. Each asteroid's type decides which biomes it has, and every biome holds solids while some also hold liquids or gases.
Machines turn one element into another. An Electrolyzer splits water into oxygen and hydrogen, a Desalinator turns salt water into water and salt, and a Metal Refinery turns ore into metal. Rockets can also reach space destinations and bring back what sits there, with cargo modules needed for some of it.
Which Elements Matter Most
Oxygen and water come first. Duplicants need breathable air to keep working, and early on most oxygen comes from machines that split water or use up algae. Algae is consumed rather than recycled and becomes scarce later, so a growing colony needs other sources.
Iron is the main ingredient in steel, and it also goes into power systems, buildings and automation. Neutronium sits at the map's edges and under geysers, and Duplicants can't dig it at all, so it works as a permanent wall that your layout has to route around.
Abyssalite is the material to know for heat control. It forms thick veins between biomes, and as long as those veins stay intact and at least two tiles thick, they block heat from crossing. Mining it takes a Duplicant with the Superhard Digging skill, so plan ahead.
Phosphorite, found in jungle biomes, keeps domestic crops growing and feeds into fertilizer. Petroleum and natural gas both produce power: petroleum runs generators and rocket engines, and natural gas runs its own generator. Petroleum can also be turned into plastic in a Polymer Press.
Dangerous Elements and How to Stay Safe
Chlorine is unbreathable, and Duplicants who walk through it unprotected for more than three seconds gain Eye Irritation, which lowers their Athletics. Hot steam can scald Duplicants, except in saunas, and an Atmo Suit protects against it.
Liquids are just as risky. A Duplicant submerged without a way to reach air will drown after a while, hot liquid burns, and very cold liquid causes frostbite unless the Duplicant wears an Atmo Suit.
Slime can carry germs that cause Slimelung, and it gives off polluted oxygen when dug up, so handle it with care. In Spaced Out!, uranium ore and nuclear fallout also give off radiation.
Space is a hazard for fluids too. Liquids and gases that touch open space disappear unless a barrier like Drywall covers them.
FAQ
How much oxygen does a Duplicant use?
A typical Duplicant uses about 100 grams of oxygen per second, but traits change that. A Mouth Breather doubles it to 200 grams per second, while Diver's Lungs cut it to 75 and Deep Diver's Lungs cut it to 50.
Do Duplicants need to drink water?
No. Duplicants don't need to drink water directly to survive, but water still matters a lot. It supports food production, such as the Microbe Musher, which turns 75 kilograms of dirt and 75 kilograms of water into a Mush Bar, and it also keeps certain crops watered.
Can you make power from gas?
Yes. A Natural Gas Generator burns 90 grams of natural gas per second to produce 800 watts of power, and it gives off polluted water and carbon dioxide while it runs. Flatulent Duplicants can supply some natural gas, but you need a lot of them to keep one generator running.
