Critters are the animals that share the world of Oxygen Not Included with your Duplicants. They come in land, flying and water types, and most can be caught, tamed and raised on a ranch for eggs, meat, materials, light or power. Some are easy to live with, while a few are dangerous and need careful handling. Knowing what each kind eats, how it behaves and how to tame it will help you decide which critters belong in your colony.

What Are Critters in Oxygen Not Included?
Critters are the non-Duplicant animals that roam the world you're building in, and they fall into three groups. Land critters walk or burrow, airborne critters float or fly, and aquatic critters live in water or other liquids. The base game has the first set, and the expansion packs add many more, including Plug Slugs, which need Spaced Out!. Some critters turn up on their own in the world, while others arrive as care packages from a Printing Pod.
What Critters Need to Stay Healthy
Every critter has a diet, a range of temperatures it can handle and a minimum amount of room. Wild critters can go without food, but a tame critter without enough food starves, loses happiness and dies after ten cycles. Temperatures outside its range cause frostbite or scalding and drag its happiness down as well.
Water matters just as much. Aquatic critters such as Pacu flop helplessly when there isn't enough liquid around them, and most other critters drown if they stay submerged in liquid they can't swim through for about 75 seconds. Happiness has four levels, from Miserable up to Happy, and it changes how quickly critters burn through food and how often they breed. Crowding, where too many critters share a space, brings a happiness penalty, so each room needs enough space for its residents.
Are Critters Dangerous?
Most critters leave Duplicants alone, and many only fight back once they're attacked. A few are a real threat. Pokeshells turn aggressive when they're guarding their eggs, and a group of them can beat a Duplicant to death. Beetas attack anything that isn't a Beeta, and Gnits are hostile flying critters.
Stone and Smooth Hatches hit hard enough to seriously injure or kill a lone Duplicant, so it's safer to wrangle them than to fight them. Morbs flee when attacked, but their germs carry Slimelung, which is a serious disease risk for Duplicants.
How to Catch Critters
Land critters are caught in a Critter Trap, a reusable trap that snares any non-flying critter that walks into it. Flying critters need an Airborne Critter Trap instead. Arming a trap takes a Duplicant with the Critter Ranching skill, and that same skill lets a Duplicant wrangle a critter directly without a trap.
Once a critter is caught, Duplicants carry it to a Critter Drop-Off, which releases it back into the world. You can cap how many critters the Drop-Off's room will hold. If eggs keep hatching past that cap, a Critter Pick-Up handles the extra critters.
How to Tame Critters and Start a Ranch
Most wild critters become tame after they're groomed at a Grooming Station two cycles (game days) in a row, and once they're tame, they stay that way. The Grooming Station is the core of a Stable, an enclosed room set up with a Ranching Building. Pacus and Jawbos are the exception, since they're tamed by feeding instead. Taming matters because a wild critter lays about one egg in its whole life, while a tame one that lives a full life can lay around fifteen. Eggs keep their parent's status, so breeding from tame critters keeps your line tame.
Every ranching task, including grooming, shearing, wrangling and moving critters, needs a Duplicant with the Critter Ranching skill. Each grooming session also gives a short happiness boost, which helps with breeding. Ranching runs into one common problem: eggs count toward a Stable's space. Too many eggs make it Cramped, and critters stop laying until the eggs are removed or hatch. Incubators can help a new ranch get going, since a rancher can lullaby an egg inside one to make it hatch up to five times faster. They don't increase the number of eggs, though, and filling a new ranch can still take 50 cycles or more.
Which Critters Are Worth Keeping?
The game points to Hatches, Shine Bugs and Pufts as the first critters to ranch, and they're a sensible place to start. Hatches are the food and coal critters. They eat solid minerals and turn much of it into coal, and a happy Hatch yields enough raw meat that roughly two per Duplicant covers their food. Smooth Hatches are the exception: they eat metal ore and give back refined metal.
Pufts are the air handlers. They breathe in gas and breathe out solids, so they can turn polluted oxygen into slime, oxygen into oxylite and chlorine into bleach stone. Oxylite can serve as a rocket oxidizer, which makes Dense Pufts especially useful. Shine Bugs are the light critters. They're fairly rare, but they give steady light and decor to the rooms around them, and their eggs can be cracked open for resin.
Pacu are the water-side food source. They turn algae and seeds into polluted dirt and leave fish fillets behind when they die. Plug Slugs hang from ceilings at night and power the exposed wires nearby, and Divergent critters boost any plants they touch.
FAQ
Can every critter be tamed?
No. Morbs, Beetas, Mimikas, Gnits and Kelpoles can't be tamed, so they can't be raised on a ranch at all.
How long do critters live?
Lifespans vary a lot by species. Pacus and most Shine Bugs live about 25 cycles, while Hatches live 100. Morbs have no lifecycle, so they don't age out.
Which critter is easiest to handle at the start?
Pufts are a good first critter. They don't fight back when attacked and flee instead, so they handle well while you learn the basics.
