In Oxygen Not Included, you set the jobs and build a base inside an asteroid. It's a base-building survival game where you run a colony. You start with three workers called Duplicants, dropped into rock where breathable air exists only in scattered pockets. You don't control them directly. Instead, you choose what to dig, build and harvest, and decide which jobs come first, and your Duplicants carry out the work.
Most of your time goes to one loop: dig, build, keep everyone fed and breathing, and repeat. Digging makes room and reveals the water, air and materials your base needs. Buildings turn those materials into the power, pumps, farms and beds that keep Duplicants alive, because they die if their air or food runs out. Research unlocks better buildings over time, and the clock runs in cycles, a full day and night that lasts 10 minutes at normal speed.
Over time you work toward a colony that keeps itself running, with enough air, food and power to support a growing population. The Spaced Out! expansion adds colonies on several worlds at once, with rockets to travel between them.

Game data
Critters
Critters are the animals of Oxygen Not Included, living alongside Duplicants on land, in the air and in water. Most can be caught, tamed and raised on a ranch for eggs, meat, materials, light and power. A few, such as Beetas and Gnits, are hostile, and Pokeshells turn aggressive around their eggs, so it's worth learning each critter's behavior before you build around it.
Foods
Food keeps Duplicants alive and sets their morale, with each dish rated on a quality scale from Grisly to Ambrosial. Most food spoils over time unless it's kept cold or stored in a sterile gas, and a few foods never spoil at all. Cooking raw ingredients at the Electric Grill and Gas Range raises their quality and calories, while the Microbe Musher covers the early game.
Plants
Plants are the living parts of your base in Oxygen Not Included, and they come in four main kinds. Food plants feed your Duplicants, industrial plants supply raw materials, decorative plants improve rooms, and utility plants change the air or temperature. Most need the right temperature, gas, light or liquid to grow, and growing them on a farm makes them mature about four times faster than wild plants.
Elements
Elements are the basic substances that make up the world of Oxygen Not Included, from solids like rock and metal to liquids like water and oil, gases like oxygen and steam, and empty vacuum. Each one changes form at set temperatures, and weight, pressure and heat decide how it moves and mixes. Players gather them by digging, through geysers and vents, with machines that convert one element into another, or by sending rockets into space.
Biomes
Biomes are the regions that make up each asteroid and planetoid in Oxygen Not Included. Each one has its own temperature, air, materials, plants, and creatures, and those contents decide what it offers your colony and what it can do to your Duplicants. Space forms the surface of every asteroid, while some biomes, such as Aquatic and Niobium, appear only on specific worlds.

ONI gameplay tips
- Start on No Sweat mode with the Terra asteroid. It eases hunger, stress, morale and disease for your Duplicants, while the rules for oxygen and temperature stay the same. That gives you room to learn how the systems connect without harsh early setbacks.
- Build an Outhouse among your first builds. Duplicants need the toilet about once a cycle, and without one they leave polluted water on the floor. Anyone who steps in it gets stressed, so one early Outhouse prevents a lot of trouble.
- Set up a Microbe Musher early for food. Starting rations cover only a handful of cycles, so food is the first real pressure on your colony. Power the Musher with a Manual Generator and a Battery, and it will make Mush Bars for your crew.
- Research Basic Farming before oxygen. Your colony will run out of food long before it runs out of air. Basic Farming unlocks the Planter Box for growing food, so you can start feeding your crew sooner.
- Dig in small steps and hold off on new Duplicants. Digging takes time, and a small oxygen supply spread across a bigger base runs out faster. Wait until your air and food stay steady before you accept new Duplicants from the Printing Pod.
- Check the Temperature Overlay before you dig toward a biome edge. Heat creeps in from outside, and neighboring biomes can hold dangerous gases and germs. Seal the edge with Insulated Tiles and Airlocks before you break through, so the heat and gases stay on their side.
