The creatures in Little Witch in the Woods are the small animals, insects and odd critters that live across Green Forest, Cloud Valley and Starlit Cave. You play as Ellie, an apprentice witch who explores the forest and helps the villagers. She records creatures in her Witch's Encyclopedia, and many of them give up parts that go into potions and candies.

What Are the Creatures in Little Witch in the Woods?
Creatures are the wildlife you meet while exploring. They fall into four groups: creatures of Green Forest, creatures of Cloud Valley, creatures of Starlit Cave, and a set of special creatures that stand apart from the rest. The first three groups follow the areas you explore, so the place you're in usually tells you what you can find there. Some special creatures show up in several areas, and a couple of them stand in your way until you have the right item.
Where to Find Creatures in Green Forest, Cloud Valley and Starlit Cave
Green Forest is split into the Plains, the Plateau, the Waterfall and the Depths, and each spot has its own mix of creatures. The Waterfall has the most variety, with lizards, frogs and birds. The Plains is home to the furry ones, such as the Squishychub and Pumpkin Terrier.
Cloud Valley has an Upstream and a Downstream area, along with Blue and Red Shroom Forage Spots. The Upstream has the most creatures, and the Shroom Forage Spots hold three creatures that are around all day.
Starlit Cave is the game's third area, and it's split into the Top, the Mid Outer Wall, the Mid Inner and the Bottom. Most of its creatures stick to one part of the cave, so it helps to know where you're heading. Some creatures only appear at night, so it's worth checking each spot during both day and night. A quick trip at the wrong time can make an area look empty.
How to Record Creatures in the Witch's Encyclopedia
Recording is how creatures get their entries in Ellie's Witch's Encyclopedia, the book she carries with her. The option stays locked until you visit the Shining Tree at the top of the mountain, so that trip comes first. Once it's open, you fill in each entry with the quill tool by drawing the creature.
To record a creature, equip the quill and walk up to it. Stay back, since getting too close can scare it off, and keep drawing for a few seconds until the interact wheel fills on screen. Then open the Encyclopedia to read the new entry.
The entry is also where you find out whether a creature needs a net, so record it before you try to collect it. Skipping this step can waste a trip, since you may need a tool you haven't brought yet.
How to Catch Creatures: Tools, Nets and Gloves
Many creatures are collected by holding the button until the wheel fills. Some run off after each try, so you'll need to chase them and keep going until it's full. Gloves are used to pull and hug creatures and some plants, while a pickaxe breaks open rocks and a trowel digs up mud patches.
Insects and pollen-emitting plants can only be collected with a net, so make sure you have one before you head out after them. Some creatures also need a potion first. An Earmuff Potion protects you from loud creatures, since their cries can drain your stamina or block your path.
What Creatures Are Used for in Potions and Candies
Many creatures give up a part, such as fur, a feather, a shell or water, and those parts become ingredients. Some need processing first. Squishychub Fur, for example, goes through the Extractor to become an extract, and Pumpkin Terrier Fur is burned in the Roaster instead.
Squishychub Fur Extract shows up in key recipes, including the Curse-Lifting Candy and the Sunlight Potion. Burned Pumpkin Terrier Fur is needed for the Enhance Intellect Potion in the main story. Those are the creature ingredients you'll need for the important story steps.
Special Creatures That Matter Most
Most creatures are collected for their parts, but the special creatures do more than that. Two of them block the way forward until you're ready, and one has a useful reward that makes it worth chasing.
The Gaga Bird is loud, both crying and singing, and it can copy sounds. Later in the game it sits on the south side of the Green Forest Waterfall, and its cry blocks the way into Green Forest Depths until you have the right potion.
Honey Bear is found in Cloud Valley, where it blocks the entrance to a giant mushroom. Ellie has to find out why it's in the way and comfort it, which happens through the main quest Doll Wetted by Tears.
Mimic Jelly appears at random, so it pays to keep an eye out while you explore. It runs off quickly once Ellie gets close, so a fast broomstick is the best way to chase it. Harvesting it can give Collection Items, Broom Customization Kits, Ritoring's Gifts and, rarely, Brooms.
Ritoring is a rare find that turns up in all three areas, and it can show up at any time of day. It's easy to overlook, so keep it in mind as you pass through each area.
FAQ
Is there a reward for filling out the Witch's Encyclopedia?
Yes. Reaching Rank S in an Encyclopedia Research Topic earns a Handsome Reward from Diane, a decorative plush based on a creature from that topic's category. Later in the game, the same reward can be bought from the Witches' Catalogue under Shop, then Ranking of the Encyclopedia.
Where do you find Ritoring?
Ritoring hides under rocks, bushes and mud, and only the clover on its head shows, which is green in Green Forest and blue in Cloud Valley. On the ground, pull it up with gloves, and if it's floating in the air, switch to a net. For rocks, break the whole rock with a pickaxe, and for mud puddles, dig up the whole patch with a trowel. It can also turn up underwater, so keep an eye on the water too.
Which creatures come out at night?
Blue Moon Butterfly, One Eye Frog and Pompom are all in Green Forest, while Grass Whistler is in Cloud Valley. In Starlit Cave, Water Dragonfly and Phantom Jellyfish are the ones that come out after dark. Plan your visits to those spots for night, or you'll likely miss them.
