Cats live around the village of Wisteria, but you won't see all of them at once. The cats that show up change from visit to visit. Some come up to you on their own, while others hide and have to be searched for. Good spots to check are under the benches by the notice board, the big tree and the outdoor theatre, and among the trees near the waterfall.
Active and Lazy Cats: How Their Personalities Differ
Each cat has its own temperament, and every one is labeled either active or lazy. Active cats tend to roam, play and get into mischief. Lazy cats tend to stay put, move slowly and take longer to warm up to strangers, though a few are easygoing once they know you.
The label tells you how a cat moves, not how easy it is to befriend. Both groups include friendly cats and cats that keep their distance. Looks vary just as much, from snow-white and pitch-black coats to calico and pink fur.
How to Befriend Cats and Build Their Affection
Before a cat trusts you, it runs off when you come close, so feeding is the way in. Set food on the ground near you, and keep it away from cats that aren't close enough yet, or you may scare them off. Affection shows as hearts, and each cat needs its own number of hearts to reach the next friendship level.
As the meter fills, a cat lets you come closer, learn its name, and eventually pet it. Getting close takes patience, but each step makes the next one easier.
Favorite Fish for Cats and How Feeding Bowls Work
Fish is the food cats care about most. Each cat has one fish it loves and three it likes. Loved fish raise affection the most, liked fish raise it less, and other fish it will eat raise it the least. The favorites come from different parts of the land, such as the Green Forest, Cloud Valley and Starlit Cave.
Finding a cat's favorites can take some trial and error, and its notes show what you have learned about it. Aurea's shop sells Cat Food Bowls once the tutorial is done. A favorite fish left in a bowl gives you the best chance of a visit the next day, and it also raises that cat's affection.
How to Adopt a Cat and Keep It at Your Witch's House
Once a cat's affection is full, you can adopt it with a Name Tag of Friendship. Bjorn sells the tag. You carry it and stroke the cat to adopt it. An adopted cat moves into your Witch's House from the second day on, and at higher affection levels it may give you gifts.
Adopted cats need regular stroking and play. If one is neglected for too long, it may leave the Witch's House and return to the village.
Cat Quests, Toys and Furniture
Several quests are tied to cats. Village Cats unlocks the Cat Encyclopedia, Playing with the Cats unlocks a Cat Toy, and Feed the Cats with Fish is a side quest from Freddie. Kyla's side quests ask for materials to place a cat cushion, an exercise wheel and a dangling toy.
Cat furniture is another way to spend gold. Bjorn sells a scratcher, cushion, mobile and wheel, and each can only be bought once.

Peanut is described as the first cat to show up in the area, so it makes a natural starting point. Candy is one to keep an eye out for, since it has been seen in every part of the village.
What do the fish icons above a cat mean?
A bubble with a fish above a cat's head means it has noticed the fish. A crossed-out fish means it has already eaten that day, so try again tomorrow.
Does petting a cat raise its affection?
Yes, but it depends on how far along you are. At the first level, petting counts like an ordinary fish, and at the second level, it counts like a fish the cat likes.
Does the cat toy help a cat bond with you?
Yes. Once a cat reaches the first friendship level and you have finished Playing with the Cats, the Cat Toy adds friendship once a day.
