Cargo types are the kinds of freight you haul in Euro Truck Simulator 2, from apples and cement to cars and wind turbine parts. Each one shapes the job, deciding what kind of trailer you need, how heavy the load is, and sometimes which certificate or skill you need before you can take it. Knowing those details helps you choose work that fits your truck and your career.

How Cargo Types Reach You: Freight Market and Cargo Market
Cargo reaches you through two job systems, and the difference between them decides what you can carry. In the Freight Market, each job comes with a trailer already attached, which makes it the most flexible way to take on loads and usually the better place to learn. In the Cargo Market, the job uses a trailer you own, so only cargo that fits that trailer can come up for you.
The Cargo Market can be profitable and gives your work a more focused feel, but it narrows what you see. That trade-off is the main thing to understand before you start.
Trailer Bodies and Which Cargo Types You Can Carry
Every cargo type fits certain trailer bodies, which are the types of trailer it can ride on, such as a curtainsider, a refrigerated trailer, a tank, or a flatbed. That fit works as a filter. When you use your own trailer, only cargo that fits its body can come up for you, so a load that needs a different body simply won't be offered.
Curtainsiders and dry freighters are the broadest. They cover a wide range of general freight, from food and drinks to tyres and clothes, which is why they give you the most choice. Tank, refrigerated, dumper, livestock, log, panel and vehicle transporter bodies are narrower. Each one fits a smaller group of loads, such as liquids and gases in tanks or loose material like gravel and coal in dumpers, so there are fewer jobs to pick from. A specialised trailer can leave you with empty return trips or poor local cargo options.
When to Buy an Owned Trailer for Cargo Market Work
Buy your first owned trailer only after your truck is earning steadily. Make sure you can cover loan payments, repairs and fuel and that you understand how the two markets differ. A trailer bought too early can sit unused or push you into low-value work.
Before you buy, check the cargo around your garage and make sure your trailer can carry it. A flexible trailer keeps more jobs open, while a niche one narrows your options. Treat the first owned trailer as a test. Run several Cargo Market jobs, check the distance, deadline, route shape and pickup location for each, and compare the work with Freight Market jobs. If the trailer narrows your career too much, sell it or park it and go back to Freight Market until you're ready.
ADR Cargo Types and Dangerous Goods Certificates
ADR cargo is dangerous goods, from flammable gases and fuels to poisons, corrosive chemicals and explosives. You can only take these jobs with the matching ADR certificate. You earn the certificates through experience, and they substantially increase your income.
The classes group the danger. Class 2 covers gases, from flammable ones like acetylene and hydrogen to poisonous ones like chlorine and fluorine, with non-flammable gases such as nitrogen and neon in between. Class 3 covers fuels such as petrol, diesel and kerosene. Class 4 covers flammable solids and materials that catch fire on their own or react with water, like white phosphorus and sodium.
Class 6 covers poisons, such as mercuric chloride and pesticides, along with biohazards like infectious materials. Class 8 covers corrosives that can damage tissue or corrode metal, such as hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide. Many dangerous loads ride on tank or container trailers, and a few use curtainsiders.
Fragile, High-Value and Heavy Cargo Types
Some cargo asks more of your skills than general freight does. Fragile loads, such as electronics, glass and packaged food, need the Fragile Cargo skill. High-value loads, like cars, excavators and some farm machinery, need the High-Value Cargo skill. You unlock these as you gain experience, and better skills open new job options with higher rewards.
Heavy loads, such as locomotives and large machinery, count as heavy cargo, and they often ride on low bed or low loader trailers. Heavy and high-value loads are worth spotting before you accept a job, because they can require specialised equipment or a particular cargo pack.
Special Transport and DLC Cargo Packs
Cargo from the base game needs no paid pack. Other cargo types come from paid cargo packs or map expansions, and each one belongs to the pack or map it came with. A cargo tied to a map expansion still isn't offered in every city on that map.
Special Transport is its own case. Those loads use an escorted-job setup, so they don't work like everyday freight, and many are large or heavy pieces that need extendable trailers. Other cargo packs add their own sets too, such as the Heavy Cargo Pack, the Bobcat Cargo Pack and the JCB Equipment Pack.
Which Cargo Types Matter Most Early On
Early on, general freight matters most. Curtainsider and dry freighter loads, such as food, drinks, packaging and building supplies, give you the widest choice of routes. Refrigerated trailers are also a good match for temperature-controlled loads when jobs are available near you.
As your skills grow, dangerous and high-value loads become the bigger opportunities. ADR certificates and the High-Value Cargo skill open jobs with bigger rewards, so they're well worth working toward. Heavy loads and Special Transport come later, since almost all of them need the High-Value Cargo skill.
Pick the cargo you enjoy hauling, since the Cargo Market gets stronger once you know what you like. Matching a trailer to that kind of work suits focused, repeat hauling.
FAQ
How heavy are cargo loads in Euro Truck Simulator 2?
Each cargo type has a load weight measured in tonnes, and some are shown as a range, meaning the load can land anywhere inside it. The number is the total load a job carries, not the weight of a single item. The exact load can differ depending on the job offer and how your trailer is set up, so treat the figure as a guide when you plan.
How do I find out which cargo types a city will offer?
Start with the companies near your garage, since each one usually produces certain cargo, and that's the best clue to what you'll see in the jobs. If the jobs look thin, check other cities before judging your trailer, and give it time. The cargo that fits your trailer doesn't always appear at once.
Can I assign a trailer to a hired driver?
Yes, but the trailer you assign also limits the jobs that driver can take. It only makes sense when it matches the cargo in demand around that driver's garage. If the driver earns less afterward, unassign the trailer and compare income over several in-game days before deciding.
