Weapon, Vitality or Spirit: What Each Deadlock Item Type Is For

Every item belongs to one of three types, and the type tells you what you're buying.

TypeWhat it improvesStat you gain from buying into it
WeaponYour gun: damage, fire rate, ammo and on-hit effectsWeapon damage
VitalityStaying alive: health, regen, resists, barriers, lifesteal and movementHealth
SpiritYour abilities: Spirit Power, range, cooldowns and durationSpirit Power

That last column is the type bonus. Buying any item raises the stat for its type, and the bonus grows with the total souls you've put into that type. It climbs in steps, and every type gets a big spike at the same soul total. Putting your souls into one type reaches that spike sooner. Sell an item and its investment goes with it.

Spirit Power does a second job. It adds to the damage, healing or barrier of anything that scales with it, whatever the item's type. Alchemical Fire is a Weapon item and Healing Rite is a Vitality item, and both grow with it. An item that scales has a base value plus a bonus for every point of Spirit Power you own.

How Item Components Save You Souls in the Deadlock Shop

Items sort into price tiers, and every item in a tier costs the same. Many items above the first tier are built from a cheaper component. When you upgrade, the shop consumes the component and takes its full price off the new item. You pay the same total whether you buy the finished item outright or build up to it. What changes is what you're holding while you save.

That makes the cheap tier a good place to start a plan. Extra Spirit, for example, upgrades into both Improved Spirit and Surge of Power: one is a plain Spirit Power item, the other imbues an ability. Grit is one of the most flexible components. It leads to Guardian Ward, Reactive Barrier, Spirit Shielding and Weapon Shielding, so what you build on it says what you're afraid of: a teammate in trouble, hard crowd control, spirit burst or bullets.

Sharpshooter and Leech each take more than one component. Sharpshooter takes Long Range and High-Velocity Rounds, and Leech takes Bullet Lifesteal and Spirit Lifesteal.

Active Items Take a Key, and the Shop Caps Them

Passive items work the moment you buy them. Active items give you something to press, and each one has to be assigned to one of a limited set of active keys. Once those keys are full, the shop won't sell you another active, even if you still have free inventory space. Sell one to make room.

Not every active is a plain press. Blood Tribute is a toggle that keeps draining your health until you switch it off. Golden Goose Egg has no cooldown at all: you hatch it once, it's consumed, and you can buy it again. Some items do both jobs. Heroic Aura gives nearby allies Bullet Resist all the time, plus a speed and fire rate burst when you press it.

Imbue Items Lock Their Bonus to One Ability

Some items ask you to imbue one of your hero's abilities when you buy them, and the effect then applies to that ability only. Ballistic Enchantment, Compress Cooldown, Duration Extender, Echo Shard, Mercurial Magnum, Mystic Expansion, Mystic Reverb, Quicksilver Reload and Surge of Power all work this way.

Pick carefully, because the choice sticks. The only way to change it is to sell the item and buy it again. The game will also let you imbue an ability that the item's effect doesn't trigger on, so read the effect before you click. Most imbue items can't go on a passive ability (Mystic Expansion and Duration Extender are the exceptions), and Echo Shard can't go on an ultimate.

Choose the ability you cast the most, or the one that decides your hero's fights. If you're not sure which that is, look through each hero's kit on the abilities list.

Which Items Need Something Specific From Your Hero?

Plenty of items hang their effect on something your hero has to do. Buy one that doesn't match and you're paying for the stats alone.

FAQ

Q.

How do you sell or refund items in Deadlock?

Sell an item back to the shop for half the souls you spent on it. Sell it before you leave the Curiosity Shop area after buying it and you get the full amount back. That window is good for undoing a misclick or moving an imbue to a different ability.

Q.

How do you unlock more item slots in Deadlock?

Your regular slots take an item of any type or cost. Extra slots unlock during the match as your team destroys enemy Walkers. Each one opens at its own Walker count, so the more lanes you break, the more room you get.

Q.

Where are the shops in Deadlock?

Each base has a shop, and the whole spawn room counts as its buying area. Every lane has a side shop next to its first Guardian, and it closes for the rest of the match once that Guardian is destroyed. Each team also has a secret shop in an underground tunnel, reached by stairs or an open manhole and set midway between Broadway and the outer lanes. You can only buy at your own team's base and side shops, but both teams can use either secret shop.

Q.

What should you buy first in Deadlock?

Start with your hero's default build. The developers split it into early, mid and late sections, and you can make and share your own builds too. Stick with the default until you know which items you want to swap, then change them one at a time.
