Bullet damage is the first number most players compare, and it tells you the least about how a hero fights. The four abilities decide whether someone charges in, heals from behind, snipes from range or holds the line, so pick the job first and let the gun come second.

Which Deadlock Hero Fits How You Want to Fight
Every hero answers the same question: what do you do when the two teams meet? Pick the answer you like, then choose the hero who does it.
- Charge in and split the team. Abrams drags enemies along with Shoulder Charge, Lash grapples straight into a fight, and Mo & Krill burrow underground and pop out with a knockup. Warden and Billy join them in melee range.
- Pick targets off from range. Vindicta takes to the air with Flight, and Assassinate hits hardest on anyone under half health. Grey Talon's Charged Shot pierces through enemies, and Holliday's headshots hit extra hard.
- Slip in and take one target. Haze vanishes with Smoke Bomb, Wraith teleports to a targeted spot with Project Mind, and Calico turns to shadows with Ava.
- Hold ground and control space. McGinnis fills an area with turrets and walls, Seven's Lightning Ball hits everything in its radius, and The Doorman moves people around with Doorway.
- Back the team up. Dynamo heals himself and nearby allies while he channels Rejuvenating Aurora, and pulls enemies in with Singularity. Kelvin seals an ally under Frozen Shelter.
- Fire a spread up close. Abrams, Calico, Pocket, Shiv, Drifter and Yamato fire several pellets at once, so their guns work best at short range.
How to Read Health and Bullet Damage
Base health and base bullet damage are starting values, and each Boon raises both. Health tells you how much a hero can take before items get involved, so a low number means staying behind the front line is your job.
Bullet damage is per shot, which makes it a weak way to compare guns on their own. A card that says 3.6 x 9 pellets means each pellet deals 3.6 damage and nine pellets fire per shot. Nine small pellets hit very differently from one big bullet, so count the pellets before you call a gun strong.
Why Every Hero Runs on Four Abilities
Each hero has four abilities. The first three are your everyday tools, and the fourth is the ultimate, the last one you unlock, so plan your positioning around it. Silver's Lycan Curse switches to a transformed form with its own set of abilities, and Mo & Krill fight as a pair. Cooldowns and upgrades for every ability are on the Deadlock abilities page.
Common Mistakes When Picking a Deadlock Hero
- Judging a hero by its gun. Plenty of heroes carry a plain gun and win with their abilities. If the damage number looks low, read the kit first.
- Buying for the wrong job. Weapon items boost the gun, Spirit items boost abilities and Vitality items keep you alive. A hero that feels weak is often on the wrong item category, and Deadlock items explains what each one gives you.
- Picking for the ultimate alone. It's the last ability to come online, so the first three have to carry you through the early fights.
FAQ
Which Deadlock hero should a beginner start with?
Start with a hero whose job is obvious from the first fight. Abrams heals off nearby enemies with Siphon Life and turns some of the damage he takes into regeneration with Infernal Resilience, so the early fights stay forgiving. Infernus is another easy pick, since Afterburn builds a burn on every enemy his weapon hits. Save combo-heavy kits like Bebop's grapple, uppercut and bomb chain until the basics feel easy.
Do Deadlock heroes get stronger during a match?
Yes. Boons are levels that come from the souls you collect, and every Boon adds base health, bullet damage and Spirit Power. Items push those numbers further.
Which Deadlock heroes can heal their teammates?
The clearest healers are Dynamo with Rejuvenating Aurora, Kelvin with Frost Grenade, Nurse Harrow with Healing Needles and McGinnis with Medicinal Specter. Ivy's Kudzu Connection also shares healing with the ally she's linked to.
Does Deadlock have hero classes?
Not on the hero select screen. Every hero has three tags instead, and they hint at how that hero plays. Many read like roles, such as Initiator, Assassin or Sniper, and Victor's tags spell out "You, Can't, Kill Me."
