Outfits in the 2010 Story Mode unlock through scrap sets, tailors, story missions and challenges. Some change how gangs and lawmen treat John. Others add a real perk, like Dead Eye that refills faster or cheaper Gunsmith prices. A few are just clothes. Only some count toward 100%, so it pays to know which before you start hunting scraps.

Other Story Mode Outfits
John starts with the Cowboy Outfit, and the Bureau Uniform unlocks at 100% game completion. The other optional outfits come from honor, challenges, scrap sets, story missions and release bonuses.
Which Outfits Count Toward 100%
Only these outfits count toward the 100% finish. The rest are optional.
- Elegant Suit
- Bollard Twins Outfit
- Treasure Hunter Outfit
- Mexican Poncho
- Bandito Outfit
- Reyes' Rebels Outfit
- US Army Uniform
- US Marshal Uniform
- Rancher Outfit
Each six-scrap set in that group ends with a purchase, so budget as you go. The Thieves' Landing tailor sells the Elegant Suit for $70 and the final scraps for Bollard Twins and Treasure Hunter. Treasure Hunter's last scrap costs $250, so save that cash first. The Bandito scrap is at the Chuparosa general store, the Reyes' Rebels scrap at the Escalera general store and the US Army scrap at the Blackwater tailor.
Bandito and Reyes' Rebels both have steps at Chuparosa in Nuevo Paraíso. Reyes' final purchase waits on "An Appointed Time," so do the Bandito steps first and come back for Reyes' later.
How to Unlock Legend of the West, Bollard Twins and Treasure Hunter
These need the most planning.
Legend of the West
Its only requirement is rank 10 in four ambient challenges: Sharpshooter, Survivalist, Master Hunter and Treasure Hunter. There's no scrap run or story mission attached, so the route is just those four, tracked in Red Dead Redemption challenges. Unlocking it doubles your Dead Eye meter capacity, and you don't have to wear it to keep that bonus. The Treasure Hunter challenge is a separate track from the Treasure Hunter outfit, so don't mix them up.
Bollard Twins
The hard part is the bounty. You have to capture a Bollard Twins bounty alive, not kill him. Bounty details are in Red Dead Redemption bounties. Nightwatch and Horseshoes both happen at MacFarlane's Ranch, so do them on the same trip.
Treasure Hunter
A few steps need planning. The Gaptooth Breach hideout only counts after "Man Is Born Unto Trouble," so hold that clear until after the mission. Hideout details are in Red Dead Redemption gang hideouts. Blackjack at Rathskeller Fork has to end in profit. The bounty has to be taken alive, same as Bollard Twins.
Story Missions That Gate Outfits
For the mission order, see Red Dead Redemption story missions. A couple of story missions gate several outfits. "An Appointed Time" gates the final Reyes' Rebels purchase and the US Army arm-wrestling task. If you have not bought a Mexican safehouse by then, the mission unlocks the Mexican Poncho. "The Last Enemy That Shall Be Destroyed" gates more. Spoiler: Jack's versions of the Cowboy Outfit and Rancher Outfit only open after it, and it also unlocks the US Army final purchase at the Blackwater tailor and the US Marshal hideout run.
The US Marshal Uniform has the strictest conditions. Clear every U.S. gang hideout within one 24-hour in-game period: Pike's Basin, Twin Rocks, Fort Mercer, Tumbleweed and Gaptooth Breach. To play it safe, clear all five in one go without dying, and skip fast travel, which can add in-game time. If you cleared those hideouts earlier, you can earn the outfit while playing as Jack. That's a spoiler route too.
Perks, Disguises and Law
Deadly Assassin is the one to wear in a shootout, since Dead Eye regenerates twice as fast while you have it on. Expert Hunter doubles the provisions you gather from skinned animals, which helps on hunting runs. Savvy Merchant halves Gunsmith prices and stacks with the Peacemaker honor discount.
Gang disguises (Bollard Twins, Bandito, Treasure Hunter and Walton's Gang) keep those gangs from attacking unless you provoke them. Reyes' Rebels works differently. Mexican law goes easier on you, but it isn't immunity.
The law outfits do different jobs. The US Marshal Uniform keeps US posses and Marshals off you unless you're wanted, though sheriffs and deputies can still catch you for crimes. The Bureau Uniform gives amnesty from U.S. and Mexican law, but you can't rob people in it, and NPCs retaliate if you shoot them. NPCs often salute you while you wear the US Army Uniform.
Gentleman's Attire is the one to know for poker. You have to wear it to get into High Stakes Poker at the Blackwater Hotel. The $250 there is the table buy-in, not the price of the outfit.
Which Releases Have Which Outfits
Walton's Gang is exclusive to the PS3 and Game of the Year versions on older releases. Deadly Assassin started as a retailer pre-order bonus, and Rockstar's Title Update 1.08 notes list it among the Social Club unlocks. Expert Hunter and Savvy Merchant come from the free Hunting and Trading Outfits Pack DLC. On original releases, Gentleman's Attire came through a Social Club link.
Recent releases include the bonus content. Gentleman's Attire still unlocks after "New Friends, Old Problems" on those versions, though.
Mistakes That Waste Time
- Wearing the Expert Hunter outfit into a mission. It can skip the opening cutscenes. Rockstar Support confirmed the problem in 2023 and had no fix at the time, so swap outfits before you start the mission.
- Counting on the disguise everywhere. Banditos at Fort Mercer still attack, and the rail house at Gaptooth Breach is the exception for Treasure Hunters, so don't count on that spot staying calm.
- Buying Savvy Merchant for sell prices. It only cuts Gunsmith prices. Sell prices stay the same.
FAQ
Are the Undead Nightmare outfits included?
No. Undead Nightmare has its own outfits, which aren't part of the 2010 Story Mode. Other guides may show more outfits because they include that expansion or count platform and DLC versions separately.
Does any story chapter block outfit changes?
Yes. One late story chapter doesn't let you change outfits at all, so any swap you need has to happen before that point.
Which outfit should I buy first?
The Elegant Suit. It's a $70 purchase at the Thieves' Landing tailor, and it counts toward 100%.
