Challenges are the ranked side goals you track under Challenges in the Journal. Each track opens one rank at a time, so you can't skip ahead to the hard ones. Ranks 5 and 10 in each track carry the 100% percentage and the named rewards, so those are the milestones to plan around.

Sharpshooter
Shoot a flying bird to open Sharpshooter. Ranks 6, 8 and 10 bring you to gang hideouts.
Survivalist
Pick your first Wild Feverfew to start the herb track. Ranks 8 and 9 need large hauls, then Rank 10 sends you back through earlier herb regions for two of each other type.
Master Hunter
Skin a coyote to start Master Hunter. Its last two ranks send you after legendary animals.
Treasure Hunter
The first map comes from a random encounter. Save the hunter or take it from his body, then use each map to find the next treasure.
Which ranks count toward 100%
Every track counts toward 100%, but only Ranks 5 and 10 pay out the percentage. That's 8% in total. The ranks in between don't add any percentage, but each one has to be finished before the next one opens.
| Track | Rank 5 | Rank 10 |
|---|---|---|
| Sharpshooter | More ammunition in safehouse and camp chests | Dead Eye builds faster when you shoot and kill targets |
| Survivalist | Survivalist Maps last 40 minutes instead of 20 | Unlocks distilling tonic from harvested herbs |
| Master Hunter | Buffalo Rifle at gunsmiths for $950, or $475 with high Honor | Unlocks the ability to make Vittles when skinning animals; they restore about 80% of your health when eaten. |
| Treasure Hunter | Free stagecoach rides | Treasure Hunter's Satchel doubles consumable capacity |
How to get the Legend of the West Outfit
Finish Rank 10 in every track and the Legend of the West Outfit unlocks. The outfit also expands your Dead Eye meter. Don't look for that boost on Master Hunter Rank 10. That rank unlocks Vittles, and the expanded meter comes with the outfit.
Routes that save backtracking
- Survivalist Maps show nearby plants for 20 minutes. Once Rank 5 is finished, they last 40, so save the longer window for the big hauls at Ranks 8 through 10.
- Tall Trees is worth a long visit. It has the bears for Sharpshooter Rank 7 and Master Hunter Rank 8, the elk and bighorn sheep for Master Hunter Rank 7, and the herbs for Survivalist Ranks 7 and 10.
- The Buffalo Rifle only opens after Master Hunter Rank 5. If you reach Sharpshooter Rank 7 first, the Rolling Block Rifle handles the one-shot bears.
What resets progress
A few habits set you back. Dying can reset progress on the Master Hunter wolf and cougar tasks, so carry Medicine. A reload, weapon switch or holster can break the streak in Sharpshooter Ranks 9 and 10, so keep your gun drawn and aimed.
FAQ
Does Honor change the treasure payouts?
Yes. High Honor raises each gold bar's sale value by about half. The numbers are sale values, not a guaranteed payout, so don't plan around one fixed amount.
Do the Tomahawk Mastery and Explosive Rifle Mastery ladders count here?
No. Those are separate weapon ladders with their own ranks, so they sit outside the tracks covered here.
Are the Undead Nightmare challenges included?
No. Undead Nightmare is its own campaign with its own challenges, and multiplayer challenges aren't included either. The original campaign and Undead Nightmare are separate choices on the menu, so the tracks here only cover the original campaign.
Do I need story progress for these?
Some ranks take place in Nuevo Paraíso and West Elizabeth, so you need enough story progress to reach those areas. See Red Dead Redemption story missions if you need the campaign route.
