How the chains work
A question mark or contact message starts a chain when the right protagonist and story condition are available. Later missions may require a phone call, a previous chain step, a property, a time window, or a particular story state. The unlock and starting-location details keep those gates visible so you do not wait at the wrong marker.
Franklin's chains carry much of the optional completion work, while Tonya's first tow is the side mission that the story needs after Father/Son. Michael's Epsilon and Abigail chains, Trevor's Maude, Nigel, Josh, Mrs. Philips, and Rampage work, and the other contacts remain optional or post-completion content as marked. Character biographies are separate from mission order and progression.
Completion and gold objectives
Completion relevance distinguishes story-required work, 100% chains, optional jobs, and post-completion content. Gold objectives are the named replay targets for a mission. Some chain steps are needed to reach a qualifying mission without adding their own Social Club tick, so use each mission's completion relevance instead of relying on a single overall total.
Maude's bounty hunts remain part of her contact chain even though Social Club also files them under Hobbies & Pastimes. Rampages can be replayed from the Strangers & Freaks menu but are not required for 100%. The Last One is the Sasquatch Hunter finale and opens after 100% completion.
Common mistakes
- Do not mix GTA Online contacts or later Online mission chains with Story Mode strangers.
- Pulling Favors is the required Tonya mission after Father/Son; the later tows use their own text, call, or chain gates.
- Hao's Shift Work is both the first South Los Santos race unlock and a Strangers & Freaks mission. Social Club also records the race under Hobbies & Pastimes.
- Maude's bounty targets do not create a duplicate Special Bonds mission.
- The Last One, Epsilon, and several optional chains have story-state or completion gates. Check the unlock details before treating a missing marker as a bug.
- Mission order and rewards are distinct from character biographies, affiliations, and status.
Trevor's Grass Roots encounter is optional and differs from the Franklin and Michael versions.
The Civil Border Patrol chain moves from its first encounter through An American Welcome to Minute Man Blues.
Cletus's hunting lessons begin with Target Practice and continue with Fair Game before later hunting activity opens.
Josh's property chain moves through Extra Commission, Closing the Deal, Surreal Estate, and Breach of Contract.
Trevor's Exercising Demons mission is protagonist-specific and has its own contact challenge.
Maude's bounty hunts follow the Special Bonds introduction. Social Club also records the hunts under Hobbies & Pastimes.
The Mrs. Philips chain is available only while Trevor remains alive after the final story choice.
Nigel's Vinewood Souvenirs chain follows the contact through its named targets and final act.
Rampages can be replayed from the Strangers & Freaks menu. They are optional and are not required for 100% completion.

Does this include GTA Online contacts?
No. It covers named GTA 5 Story Mode Strangers & Freaks missions. GTA Online contacts, jobs, and later Online chains stay out.
Which Strangers & Freaks mission is required to continue the story?
Pulling Favors for Tonya is required after Father/Son. The remaining chains are optional, 100% work, or post-completion content as shown in their completion fields.
Are the Maude bounty hunts also hobbies?
Yes. Maude's bounty hunts remain part of her mission chain, while Social Club also records their activity requirements under Hobbies & Pastimes. They are not duplicate missions.
Is Shift Work a street race or a Stranger mission?
Both. Shift Work is Hao's contact mission and the unlock associated with the first South Los Santos street race. The race unit itself is covered in Hobbies & Pastimes.
Do all of these missions count toward 100% completion?
No. Missions are marked as Story + 100%, 100%, 100% chain, Optional, or Post-100%. Check each mission's completion relevance rather than assuming every contact mission is required.
Where are the character biographies?
Named strangers' identities, roles, affiliations, and status are separate from their mission order, unlocks, rewards, and gold objectives.
