You can change both your Roblox username and display name, but they do different jobs.
Your username is the unique account name Roblox uses to identify you. Changing it requires Robux, and Roblox shows the cost before you buy.
Your display name is the name other players usually see first on your profile and in experiences. It is free to change, but you can only change it once every seven days.
| Name type | Cost | Main rule |
|---|---|---|
| Username | Requires Robux | Must be unique and available |
| Display name | Free | Can match another player's display name |
If you are changing a username because you need more Robux first, stick to safe methods from Roblox and avoid sketchy offers. The safe routes in how to get Robux are a better move than handing your login to a random site. That road is paved with regret and password resets.
Change your Roblox username when you are ready to spend Robux
Username changes happen from Account Info. You need your current Roblox password, enough Robux, and a username Roblox accepts.
1. Open Account Info
- Log in to your Roblox account.
- Open Settings.
- On web, use the gear icon in the upper-right corner.
- On mobile, open More, then Settings.
- Select Account Info.
2. Buy the username change
- Select the Change Username button or pencil icon.
- Enter the new username.
- Enter your current Roblox password.
- Review the Robux cost Roblox shows on screen.
- Select Buy if you want to continue.
After the change, you can sign in with the new username and the same password.
Your old usernames do not vanish. Roblox says previous usernames can appear in Settings, on your profile, and through People search. You can change back to a past username, but Roblox still treats it as another paid username change.
Roblox also does not allow username swaps with an alt account. A capitalization-only change does not get a discount either, which is rude to tidy-name people but still the rule.
Change your Roblox display name for free
Display names are easier. They are free, they do not have to be unique, and they can be a cleaner way to update how you appear without paying Robux.
1. Open the display name setting
- Log in to your Roblox account.
- Open Settings.
- Select Account Info.
- Choose Change Display Name.
- If Roblox labels it as Name instead, use that field.
2. Save the new display name
- Enter the new display name.
- Select Save.
- Refresh Roblox if the old name still shows for a moment.
Roblox says your username and display name are both visible on Roblox and in associated experiences. A display name is not a private nickname, so keep it clean and easy to recognize.
You can only change your display name once every seven days. If you changed it recently, waiting is the fix. No secret button, no magic menu.
Fix a username or display name that Roblox will not accept
Roblox filters usernames and display names. If a name fails, the problem is usually the name, the account setting, or the timing.
1. Pick a name Roblox allows
Try a shorter, simpler name. Remove blocked words, awkward symbols, or formatting that starts or ends badly.
Usernames also have to be available. If another account already owns the username, pick a different one.
2. Check the display name cooldown
If the display name button works but Roblox will not save the change, you may still be inside the seven-day cooldown.
Wait until the cooldown ends, then try again with the exact name you want.
3. Check Robux and password for username changes
Username changes need Robux and your current password. If either one is missing or wrong, Roblox will not complete the purchase.
Roblox shows the cost before you confirm, so read that screen carefully before selecting Buy.
4. Check parent or account restrictions
Some younger accounts may have linked parent controls or age-related settings. If a child account cannot access a setting, check the linked parent account and the parental controls area.
For a broader look at age-based Roblox account changes, Roblox Kids and Select accounts explains how younger accounts and parent controls fit together. If you are also sorting out other account settings, Roblox voice chat setup covers another common settings path.
5. Remember the verified badge edge case
If your account has a Roblox Verified Badge, changing your username or display name can remove the badge. Check Roblox's verified badge rules before changing a notable account name.
For most players, the simple choice is this: use a display name for a free visible name change, and only change your username when the unique account name itself is worth spending Robux on.
