Runes are where a normal item starts becoming a real build piece. They drop from enemies, carry elemental or utility effects, and can add power that changes how a weapon, armor piece, or pickaxe actually performs once you have something worth investing in. Some runes support raw damage, some improve mining, some add status effects, and some are simply better than others for the amount of effort they take to farm.
They also come with an important restriction: runes are gear-specific. A pickaxe rune only belongs on a pickaxe, a weapon rune only belongs on a weapon, and the same logic applies across the system.
