Runes are bonus items in Rogue Legacy 2 that boost your character in different ways. Some heal you when you land a kill, some pull gold and loot toward you, and others make you faster. Players can collect and keep track of every rune in the game, and knowing what each one does makes it easier to choose what to equip.

What Runes Do in Rogue Legacy 2
Runes are permanent bonuses for your character, and you decide which ones to equip. Each one has its own effect, and the range is wide, so you can pick the ones that fit how you like to play. Choosing well matters, since you can't equip every rune you own at the same time.
How to Find Runes in Rogue Legacy 2
Runes come from Fairy Chests. Each one is a silver chest with a switch in the same room, and flipping that switch starts a challenge you have to finish before you can reach the chest. If you fail, the chest stays locked unless you have the Skeleton Key relic.
When a region stops giving new runes from its Fairy Chests, you have to move on to new areas. Once every region has run dry, no new runes appear until you reach New Game Plus, so it pays to open every Fairy Chest you pass while you can.
How to Buy Runes and Manage Your Rune Weight Limit
The Enchantress sells runes, but she won't sell anything until you buy the Enchantress' Quarters upgrade in the Manor. After that, you can buy the runes you've found from her with both Gold and Red Aether, so save up some of each. Magnesis is the exception, since it's available from the start.
You equip runes up to your Rune Weight limit. Each rune has a weight, and if adding one would push your total past the limit, the game won't let you equip it. Your limit grows over time. Upgrades in the Manor and the Soul Shop raise it, and each class's Mastery ranks add Rune Weight too. Raising it early is worth doing, since the limit decides how many runes you can use at once.
How to Upgrade Runes in Rogue Legacy 2
Leveling up a rune takes duplicate copies of it, and each level costs both Gold and Red Aether. Each rune can be leveled up to level 10, and every level costs more than the one before it.
Duplicates are rare, and most don't show up until New Game Plus. That makes upgrading a long-term goal, so don't worry if your favorite rune stays at a low level for a while.
Which Runes Are Worth Using
No single rune is best for every build, so the right pick depends on how you play. If you want to stay alive longer, Lifesteal and Soulsteal both heal you every time you defeat an enemy. Lifesteal gets stronger with Strength and Soulsteal with Intelligence, so they pay off more when you build those stats.
If loot is your focus, Magnesis pulls gold, ore, and Red Aether toward you from farther away. For getting around, Haste makes you move faster, while Dash and Vault add extra air dashes and jumps. Dash needs Ananke's Shawl and Vault needs Aether's Wings before you can equip them. Those two heirlooms unlock the air dash and double jump that these runes build on.
Weight matters just as much, since heavier runes eat into your limit fast. Check each rune's weight before you commit to a build.
FAQ
Why can't I equip a rune I already own?
The game blocks a rune when its weight would push your total past your Rune Weight limit. Unequip a heavier rune to make room, or swap in a lighter one that fits.
Do I keep my runes if I die?
Yes. Once you've unlocked a rune, it stays available to buy and equip, and the levels you've bought stay with it. Unlocks belong to your save, not to a single run.
