PlateUp! is a restaurant game where you build a kitchen, cook dishes and serve customers over a run of days. Appliances are the stoves, sinks, tables and machines you place around your restaurant to do that work. Each one has a job, from cooking food and cleaning dishes to moving ingredients from one spot to another. Knowing what they do and how to upgrade them is what keeps a busy kitchen from falling behind.

How Appliances Get Into Your Restaurant
Appliances come to you as blueprints. The shop offers a set of them each day, and you need the blueprint before you can buy the real piece of equipment. Loose blueprints don't survive into the next preparation phase, so a Blueprint Cabinet is where you keep one you want for later. That way a good find isn't lost just because you can't afford it yet.
How the Research Desk Upgrades Appliances
The Research Desk is the appliance that improves the others. It upgrades a blueprint in a Blueprint Cabinet that sits beside it, and it does this during service, which is the Customer Phase. The upgraded blueprint stays in the cabinet, so you can buy it in the next preparation phase or leave it stored for another round of research.
A useful trick is to hold on to your first Research Desk. Keep it stored in a cabinet, buy a second desk, and place it beside that cabinet. A stored desk can only be researched while another working desk is there to do it, so the second one is what lets you upgrade the first into a different desk.
Blueprint, Copying and Discount Desks
The other desks in this group each handle one job with your blueprints. A Research Desk can become any of them, and after that they follow a fixed loop: researching a Blueprint Desk gives a Discount Desk, a Discount Desk gives a Copying Desk, and a Copying Desk gives a Blueprint Desk again.
The Blueprint Desk works on the next day's shop. Interact with it during service to lock in the option it's showing, and that choice replaces one blueprint in the next day's shop. The Copying Desk makes a duplicate of a blueprint in an adjacent cabinet, and the Discount Desk halves the cost of a blueprint in an adjacent cabinet, which matters most for the expensive pieces.
Cooking Appliances: Hobs
You start with a basic hob, and most of your cooking happens on hobs. The upgraded versions trade speed for safety, so the right pick depends on how closely you can watch your kitchen. Researching a hob can give you either version.
The Safety Hob cooks 25% slower than a basic hob, but it won't burn food. The Danger Hob cooks twice as fast, but it catches fire after food burns, so pair it with a Grabber that takes finished food off right away. Gas Override and Gas Limiter are separate appliances that change how a hob behaves. Gas Override makes the hob cook 100% faster but burn 400% faster, while Gas Limiter makes it burn 75% slower but cook 25% slower.
Conveyors, Grabbers and Dish Cleaning
Automation is how you stop carrying food by hand. The Conveyor is the base of it, moving whatever is set on it toward its destination. A Conveyor can only move items placed directly on it, so it can't pull food out of boxes or appliances. The Grabber can, picking items up from boxes, appliances and counters, which is what makes most automated kitchens work.
The Smart Grabber can be set to pick up only certain item types, which helps when a recipe uses several ingredients. Dirty plates have to make it back to a sink, so cleaning is part of the flow too. The Soaking Sink cleans dishes on its own, and grabbers can carry dirty dishes in and pull clean ones back out.
Prep Machines and Storage
Once food is cooked, a few machines get it ready to serve. A Combiner joins items together automatically, and a Portioner divides food into servings. An Auto Plater puts anything placed in front of it on a plate, so you don't have to plate each dish by hand.
Storage keeps you ahead of the rush. An upgraded Prep Station, called a Frozen Prep Station, keeps the food stored in it into the next day, so prepped ingredients are ready when service starts. A Freezer, which comes from upgrading a counter or workstation, also keeps the items inside it from being cleared overnight.
Tables and Seating
Dining tables are where guests sit, and the upgrades you pick change how they behave. A Fancy Cloth Table lets you charge more, since guests pay 50% more to sit at one. Coffee tables aren't for eating. They give guests waiting for a dining table somewhere to sit, and their patience resets while they wait there.
Decor and Seasonal Appliances
Decor items don't cook or serve, but they shape how your restaurant looks. Seasonal appliances are free, and each one belongs to a single holiday. Christmas-only pieces include the Christmas Tree, Wreath and Tinsel, while Halloween-only pieces include the Pumpkin Stack and Witch Shelf.
Which Appliances Matter Most
Not every appliance changes a run equally. Start with a Research Desk and a Blueprint Cabinet, since upgrades run through them. Next comes a conveyor and grabber line, because that's what takes the carrying off your hands. Then add a Safety Hob for cooking without burnt food, a Soaking Sink for dishes, and a Frozen Prep Station for prep you can get ahead on. Finish with a couple of coffee tables for the waiting line.
FAQ
Why won't the Research Desk upgrade a blueprint?
Check that the Blueprint Cabinet sits right next to the desk and that the blueprint inside can be upgraded. The desk only works during service, so nothing changes while you're still in the preparation phase.
Can I upgrade an appliance I've already bought?
No. Research only works on blueprints, and a bought appliance can't be researched, so placing one beside a desk does nothing. The upgrade has to happen while the item is still a blueprint, which means buying after the research, not before.
