In The Planet Crafter, you land alone on a hostile world and slowly make it livable, a process called terraforming. Equipment such as oxygen tanks, backpacks, jetpacks, boots and filters keeps you alive and moving, while fuses are small parts that boost nearby machines. Knowing how both work tells you what to upgrade first and which finds are worth your time.

How Equipment Works in The Planet Crafter
Equipment is the gear your character wears, and each piece gives you a practical benefit. Some add breathable air, some add room to carry things, some make you faster, and some help you build, dig or see in dark places.
Each piece you wear uses one of your equipment slots, and you start with four. Since that number is limited, choosing what to wear matters more than it first seems.
How Equipment Tiers and Upgrades Work
Most equipment comes in tiers, numbered T1 and up, and each tier builds on the one below it. A higher tier uses the lower one as an ingredient, so making a T2 backpack means spending your T1 backpack. That means you're trading the old piece in rather than keeping both, so it pays to plan a few tiers ahead before you spend materials.
The station you need depends on the tier. Many early tiers use the basic craft station, while the top tiers of most gear need the Advanced Craft Station. Jetpacks are the exception, since every tier needs that advanced station, and boots, exoskeletons and mining chips use the T2 station.
Higher tiers unlock at set points in terraforming. They also use tougher materials like super alloy, quartz and circuit boards, so you may have to wait before you can make them.
Backpacks and Oxygen Tanks: The Upgrades to Get First
Oxygen is the resource that runs out fastest. Your oxygen meter drains far quicker than health or thirst, so the oxygen tank is the piece that most affects how long you can stay outside. Each tier holds more breathable air, which means longer trips and fewer trips back to base. Oxygen isn't used up inside buildings you've constructed, so the tank matters most out on the surface.
Backpacks solve the other early problem, which is limited space. Each tier adds more inventory slots, and the early tiers use common metals, so it pays to upgrade before your bag fills up.
Jetpacks, Agility Boots and Exoskeletons
These three change how you get around and how much gear you can run at once. A jetpack lets you fly over the terrain and travel much faster than walking, which helps when you're covering long distances or reaching high ground. Agility boots raise your running speed, and each tier adds more.
An exoskeleton has no power of its own. Its job is to add equipment slots, and each tier adds four more, so the first one takes you from four slots to eight.
Boots are a good early upgrade if you explore a lot. Exoskeletons pay off once you have more gear than your starting slots can hold.
Air Filters and Toxin Filters
Filters help you survive places that would otherwise wear you down. The air filter lowers how fast your oxygen tank drains, and it works better as terraforming improves. It doesn't replace the tank, though, so you still need one to carry air.
The Toxicity expansion adds toxin filters, which slow how fast your toxicity meter drains so you can stay in toxic areas longer. There are three tiers, and each gives more time than the one before. Higher tiers unlock as your purification progress grows. They slow the drain rather than stopping it, so you still need to take care.
Microchips and Vehicle Chips
Microchips are small chips you equip to unlock a specific ability. The construction chip lets you build structures, and the deconstruction chip lets you take them apart and get the materials back. A deconstruction upgrade goes further and can remove technical debris, the large computer stacks that block some ruins. Its blueprint comes from decoding blueprint microchips, which you find while searching wrecks and ruins.
The torch chip lights up dark places, which helps when you explore wrecks. Mining speed chips make your hand tool faster, but they do nothing for drills or the Ore Extractor.
Vehicle chips upgrade your rover. Some are ready from the start, while others come from decoding blueprint microchips. They add more vehicle inventory room and equipment slots, raise its speed, and in one case give unlimited oxygen while you ride inside.
Spacesuit Skins
Spacesuits are cosmetic. They're skins that change how your character looks, and they don't change how the suit works. You can find them in crashed satellites and shipwreck lockers, and a few are sold through space trading.
What Fuses Do in Machine Optimizers
Fuses don't do anything on their own. You place them into a machine optimizer, and the optimizer boosts nearby machines that match the fuse's type. A heat fuse does nothing for generators, for example, so you need to match each fuse to the machines around it. The basic optimizer holds one fuse and reaches up to five machines, while the T2 holds three fuses and reaches up to eight.
Fuses matter a lot for terraforming, since the terraforming index is made up of heat, pressure, oxygen, plants, insects and animals. A T2 can run three different fuse types at once, such as heat, pressure and oxygen, and one setup is to place it next to a block of terraforming machines.
Which Planet Crafter Fuses Matter Most
Energy fuses are the ones you can't afford to waste. They boost generators, but their bigger value is that the portal generator and several key builds need them as ingredients. Heat and pressure fuses matter for the same reason, since a couple of rockets need one each.
The rest help in smaller ways. Oxygen, plant and heat fuses push terraforming along, while insects and animals fuses boost their stats even more strongly. Growth fuses speed up plants and vegetables, trade rocket fuses make trade rockets fly faster, purification fuses boost purification, and production fuses shorten crafting time.
How to Get Fuses
Crafting is one route. Six fuse types can be made at the Quartz craft station, which unlocks late, once you've made real progress in System Terraformation.
The other five (production, heat, pressure, oxygen and plant) can't be crafted, so you'll need loot or the trade space rocket. Crates and wrecks hold fuses, and the trade rocket sells them for Terra Tokens, so grab them when you can.
FAQ
What do I need to craft a fuse?
Every fuse that can be crafted needs a fuse cartridge, which is made from two Solar Quartz and one circuit board. Each fuse then adds its own ingredients on top, so the cartridge is the one part they all share.
How many energy fuses should I keep?
Keep at least three. The portal generator takes two and the extraction platform takes one, so three covers both builds.
Does the jetpack have a time limit?
No. A jetpack has no duration limit, so you can keep hovering for as long as you hold the jump button in midair.
