In The Planet Crafter, seeds and food are the basics of staying alive while you reshape the planet. Seeds are planted in farming and oxygen machines to grow crops, flowers and trees, and food restores the health you lose while exploring. Most of both turn up in crates and containers across the map, though a few of the rarest seeds take real effort to track down.

How to Grow Food From Crop Seeds in The Planet Crafter
Crop seeds are the simplest way to build a steady food supply. Once your oxygen has climbed far enough through terraforming, you can build a Food Grower, which takes just aluminum, iron and a water bottle. Put a crop seed inside and it grows the matching food. The crop seeds are wheat, cocoa, eggplant, mushroom, beans and squash.
A seed stays in the grower and keeps growing crops for as long as it's left there. Harvesting gives you food, not extra seeds, so the seeds you collect are the ones you have to make last.
The T2 Food Grower works faster, but it uses about twice the power, so plan your energy before you upgrade. The Outdoor Farm is the bigger step, since one vegetable seed can grow several vegetables in it. It unlocks after you've made real progress with insects, and it needs bee larvae and super alloy to build.
Flower Seeds and Oxygen Production
Flower seeds, such as Lirma, Tuska and Orema, are the seeds that feed your oxygen machines. Insert one into a Flower Spreader and it grows flowers over a small outdoor patch, which adds to your oxygen. Some flower seeds also carry an oxygen boost, but that boost only works in the machine the seed sits in, so it won't spread across your base.
Lirma is the one to hold on to. It goes into the Biodome, the Grass Spreader and the Soleus tree seed, so it can run short later in the game.
How to Make Tree Seeds
Tree seeds are harder to come by than most seeds, so you'll usually make them yourself. Build a tree seed sequencer, also called the DNA Manipulator, which unlocks as biomass grows. Feed it a flower seed, tree bark and mutagen, and after a short wait it produces a tree seed.
Tree bark comes from the Biodome, and mutagen is made at the Biolab, so get both running before you start. You won't have every recipe at the beginning. The machine starts with only a few tree seeds, and more open up as you reach insect and plant biomass milestones.
Once you have a tree seed, insert it into a Tree Spreader placed on water. The spreader grows your trees from the seed and adds to your oxygen.
Where to Find Seeds and Food
Most seeds and food come from containers. Storage crates are the main source, and many of them hold a mix of food and seeds, while lockers and safes can hold them too. Ships and wrecks have containers of their own, so they're worth a search as well.
Space Food is the food you'll run into most often, since storage crates across the map hold it. Random containers work differently. What they can hold depends on how far terraforming has progressed, so new seeds and food keep showing up as the planet changes.
The rarest seeds take more effort. Golden seeds turn up in golden crates and golden clams, and they carry one of the strongest flower boosts. Iterra tree seed can't be made at all and only turns up in storage crates and wrecks, which keeps it rare.
What Food Does and How to Cook It
Food restores health, and that's the main reason to carry it. Beans restore the most health of any crop, which makes them worth planting early, with Space Food, squash and cocoa close behind. Honey restores little on its own, but beehives produce it and it goes into a lot of other food, so it's worth gathering.
High quality food restores a lot of health and needs only honey and beans, made at the Biolab or a cooking station. Cooking adds more than health, though. Cookies speed up your running, fish soup cuts oxygen use and honey cooked beans reduce thirst, each for a short while.
Cookies and honey cooked beans are made at the cooking station, which you unlock later in the game. Crops feed your meals directly, since flour comes from wheat and chocolate comes from cocoa.
Animal Food and Feeding Animals
Animal food is made to boost what the animals you raise produce. It comes in three tiers, and each one gives a bigger boost than the last. The higher tiers give the biggest gains, but they also take the most planning, so it's worth working up through them. You feed animals by placing food in an animal feeder, which lets nearby animals eat from it.
FAQ
How do you make Lirma seed?
Lirma seed is crafted in the tree seed sequencer from T3 mutagen, fertilizer and phytoplankton. The T3 mutagen and the fertilizer are both made at the Biolab, and you gather phytoplankton with a Water Life Collector. The chain is long, so keep any Lirma you find for when you need it.
How do you make Pleom tree seed?
Pleom is made in the tree seed sequencer from one golden seed, one tree bark and one mutagen. Mutagen is made at the Biolab from a methane cartridge, so gather those first.
How do you make animal food?
All three tiers are made at the Biolab. T1 takes honey, beans and a common larva. T2 takes T1 animal food, algae and a rare larva. T3 takes T2 animal food and a silkworm, and you make silkworms in an incubator from an uncommon larva.
Is cooked food better than raw food?
Not always. Cookies restore more health than any raw crop, but honey cooked beans and fish soup each restore less than beans on their own. So cooking pays off most with cookies, while the other meals are mainly worth making for the effect they add.
