A Refined Copper Axe is four crafts deep. It needs a Copper Axe, the Copper Axe needs Copper Ingots, each ingot needs Coal, and the Coal starts as Wood. Permafrost crafting works in chains like that all the way up, so plan the whole chain before you spend your Wood.

Get the Crafting Bench up early. Every tool past plain stone is made there, and so are Wire and Components. The Stone Furnace matters just as much, because every ingot recipe asks for Coal and Coal comes out of that furnace.
Refined Tools Need the Plain Version First
A refined tool uses its plain version as an ingredient, so the Refined Stone Axe can't exist until you've crafted a Stone Axe. The knives are the odd ones out: the Refined Copper Knife and Refined Moonrock Knife start from a Copper Shiv and a Moonrock Shiv. Scrap and Quality tools have no refined step, so they're the end of their line. For what each tool does and how long it lasts, see the tools page.
Where Cloth and Treated Hide Come From
Every clothing recipe burns through Cloth, and Cloth comes off the Tanning Rack. That same rack turns a pelt and some Animal Fat into Treated Hide, then turns Treated Hide into Cloth, so one station feeds the whole wardrobe. Make Treated Hide from whichever animal you've skinned the most of. Survivor's clothing skips Treated Hide and takes a Deer Pelt instead.
Why Ammo Starts at the Stone Furnace
Every ammo recipe uses Gunpowder, and Gunpowder needs Coal, so a furnace comes before your first bullet. Firearms also take Weapon Parts, so have those in your pack before you walk up to the Weapons Bench. The Crude Bow skips the furnace and the Weapons Bench. It's made by hand from Wood and Rope, and Wooden Arrows need no station at all. For what each gun fires, see the weapons page.
Every piece also takes Cloth, and each set adds its own material. Hybrid, Tribal and Moon Cult all use Treated Hide, and Tribal and Moon Cult add Bones on top. Military and Lunar use Quality Metal, and Lunar adds Moonrock Ingots. Renegade's and Scavenger use Copper Ingots, Utility uses Iron Ingots, Technocrats use Scrap and Insulated Mountain uses Processed Plastic. Casual only needs Rope on top of Cloth.
Treated Hide has one recipe per pelt, and every one of them makes the same item. The hare and rabbit recipe takes two pelts; the rest take one.
FAQ
Do you know every Permafrost recipe from the start?
No. A handful of basic recipes are known from the beginning, and the rest unlock through blueprint sets bought with blueprint points, recipe notes you find in the world or quest rewards.
How do you make Coal in Permafrost?
Craft it from Wood at a Stone Furnace. Every ingot recipe uses Coal as an ingredient, and Gunpowder does too, so you'll go through a lot of it.
Why are there two Quality Metal recipes?
They're two routes to the same item. The Makeshift Smelter takes raw Iron and Scrap. The Professional Smelter takes Iron Ingots and Scrap, and the ingots come from a Stone Furnace.
