How Items Work in PEAK
Items go into your Scout's inventory, and room is limited. A Backpack adds four extra slots and a Fanny Pack adds two, but both sit in the same fourth slot as Jetpacks and Rocketpacks, so you can wear only one of them at a time.
Carrying things also costs you. Items add Weight, a status effect that takes up part of your stamina bar, though Balloons and Anti-Rope Spools lighten the load instead.
Hunger, injury, cold, poison and the rest share that same bar. If they leave no room for stamina to refill, your Scout passes out, so keeping them in check matters as much as climbing well.
Where to Find PEAK Items
Most items come from luggage scattered across the island. A Regular Luggage box holds one item and sometimes a second, and a Big Luggage box holds two and sometimes a third. Each box keeps its spot for the same map, but what's inside is random when you open it, so it pays to open every box you pass.
Each run starts at the Crash Site, where one Regular and one Big Luggage box are waiting. Campfires are another good spot, since Backpacks, Hot Dogs and Marshmallows turn up around them and Ancient Statues sit close by.
Food and Forage Items
Hunger builds over time, faster on the higher Ascents, and eating food brings it back down. Cooking roughly doubles how much a food lowers it and boosts its bonus stamina, and a Portable Stove is the item you use to cook.
Bonus stamina is extra energy that sits on top of your main bar. Honeycomb gives the most of it among natural foods, followed by Purple Kingberries and Yellow Winterberries. Yellow Winterberries are also a good pick when you're overheated and hurt, since they cool you down and heal some Injury.
Not everything you find is safe to eat. Several berries are poisonous raw, but cooking takes the poison out of them, and a few mushrooms have poisonous versions. Scorpions can't be eaten raw at all, so they have to be cooked first.
Napberries clear most of your other statuses, but not Curse. The catch is that they swap your stamina bar for drowsiness and can knock you out, so eat one only when you can afford to be out cold for a bit. The Big Lollipop is a better last push: it gives you unlimited stamina for a short time, then leaves you heavily drowsy.
Fortified Milk clears some Heat and gives you a short shield that blocks new status effects, and cooking it first makes that shield last longer. Packaged snacks like Airline Food, Granola Bars and Trail Mix come from luggage, and Airline Food restores the most hunger and bonus stamina of the bunch. Frogs from the Gloom can be cooked into Frog Legs, which restore a lot of hunger.
Healing and Status Items
Status effects are the problems, and healing items are the fixes. Each status has its own source, so the trick is knowing which fix matches which problem.
Injury is the one you'll run into most, from long falls, lava, Dynamite and Zombie bites. Bandages heal a good chunk of it, while a First Aid Kit clears a large amount of Injury, Poison and Spores in one go. Remedy Fungus heals Injury, Poison and Spores as well, and dropping one creates a cloud that works on everyone standing in it.
Poison and Spores come from poisonous food, bees, spider webs and certain mushrooms. The Antidote clears both and takes away some Heat, and Medicinal Root clears them too when you eat it.
Heat comes from the Mesa sun, fire, lava and scorchberries. Sunscreen sprays a cloud that protects anyone walking through it from Mesa sunlight, and Aloe Vera and Sports Drinks take the Heat away.
Cold builds up in blizzards, around ice and in fog, and it gets worse on cold nights in the higher Ascents. Heat Packs and a Portable Stove draw it out. Drowsiness comes from Blowgun darts and the fog in the Gloom, while Thorns come from prickly plants such as prickleberries, and each thorn you take adds to the total.
Curse is the sticky one, since only a handful of things clear it, and a few mystical items add it. Cure-All, Pandora's Lunchbox and a cooked Mandrake are the main ways to clear it.
If you only carry one healing item, make it Cure-All. Drinking it clears most bad statuses in one go, which almost nothing else in your pack can do. Just don't drop it, since that shatters it.
Climbing and Deployable Items
Deployables are things you place or throw into the world to make a route. The Rope Spool is the basic tool, and it lays out climbable rope that hangs down because gravity pulls on it. The Rope Cannon fires a harpoon and drops a length of rope where it lands.
Anti-Rope works the other way. Its rope floats upward, giving you a line to climb straight up, and the Anti-Rope Cannon fires the same kind of harpoon to set it. The Chain Launcher makes a climbable chain between two points, but it can't fire upward, so it's built for crossing sideways.
The Piton is the item to plan a climb around. Attach it to a climbable surface and one Scout at a time can rest there and regain stamina.
Fungus items build platforms. Shelf Fungus makes one when thrown at a wall, and Cloud Fungus does the same on a wall or at the top of a throw through the air. Bounce Fungus is a springy surface, and each bounce restores a small amount of stamina. The Magic Bean grows a vine a few seconds after you throw it, as long as nothing blocks it.
A Checkpoint Flag is a single-use respawn point, and it saves your statuses when you place it. It's worth planting before a hard stretch.
Movement and Traversal Items
Movement items either lower the pull of gravity, give you lift or launch you. Balloons lower gravity for you, a single one by a little and a Balloon Bunch by a lot. They wear off after a while or once you've climbed high enough, so gather enough of them and you can drift in limited flight.
Gliders let you spread out and float across the air, but they use stamina while you're gliding. Jetpacks fly you upward for as long as they have fuel, and anything you stash inside is used up as fuel. Rocketpacks are the wild ones, sending you up with little control, then exploding after a short flight and injuring anyone nearby.
Parasols shade you from the harsh sun on the Mesa and slow your fall. Scout Cannons place a cannon that launches you once you step into it, and they never run out, though the landing can hurt. Rescue Claws pull you toward terrain or drag a teammate toward you, and they have a limited number of uses. Warp Fungus teleports you to wherever it lands after you throw it.
Equipment and Navigation Items
Navigation items keep you from wandering. The Compass points toward the Peak at the top of the mountain, and the Pirate's Compass points to the nearest unopened luggage or unused Ancient Statue. Binoculars let you see farther, which helps you plan a route before you commit.
The Flare is your signal. Lit, it throws up a tall column of smoke in your Scout's color so teammates can spot you, and if you light it at the Peak, it calls in the rescue helicopter. The Guidebook teaches you how to play, so it's the first thing to check if you're new.
Lanterns and Candlesticks help in the rougher spots of the mountain. Lanterns chase the cold away from everyone nearby, and you can put them out to save fuel. Candlesticks protect nearby players from the Gloom's drowsiness. Torches only turn up inside the Tomb, where they give you temporary light.
Mystical Items
Mystical items are the rare, strange ones. You get them from Ancient Luggage and Ancient Statues, and a few only turn up in certain places, like the Ancient Idol, which appears only in the Tomb. Each Ancient Statue breaks apart once you use it. If a teammate is dead or unconscious, it revives them at a cost of Hunger and Curse, and otherwise it hands you a random mystical item.
Some of these help you survive. The Ancient Idol makes you immune to damage and bad statuses while you hold it, though knockback from Dynamite can still send you tumbling. The Faerie Lantern clears a lot of bad statuses from nearby players over time.
Others are gambles. Pandora's Lunchbox clears all of your statuses, then randomly shifts several of them, and that can include Curse. The Scoutmaster's Bugle is extremely rare. It gives you and nearby teammates a big boost of bonus stamina, but it summons the Scoutmaster for a while and marks you as its target.
The Cursed Skull is the harshest. Using it kills the holder on the spot, while the rest of the team gets bonus stamina and sheds every bad status except Curse. It only turns up in Ancient Luggage.
Some items bring people back. The Scout Effigy revives a random dead teammate at a spot you choose. The Book of Bones is stranger: it turns a Scout into a living skeleton that takes far more injury than usual, and using it on a dead Scout's skeleton brings that Scout back.
Four of these are amulets: Scout's Ambition, Scout's Generosity, Scout's Initiative and Scout's Tenacity, and none of them have a use limit. Scout's Ambition gives nearby teammates infinite stamina for a short while, Scout's Initiative lifts nearby Scouts into the air, and Scout's Generosity duplicates an item you target. Scout's Tenacity clears several statuses and heals Injury, and it can be used again and again.
Props and Collectibles
Props are mostly there for fun, though a few do something useful out on the mountain. The Bing Bong plushie sits in the crashed plane at the start and answers yes-or-no questions.
Flying Discs are thrown to bonk your teammates. Berrynanas leave peels behind when you eat them. Cacti inflict a hefty dose of Thorns, so give them a wide berth.
Eggs and beehives are there for a snack. Breaking an egg from a nest reveals the food inside. A beehive in the Tropics drops honeycomb when it's broken, and a Half-Coconut takes the Heat away when you eat it. Scrolls can be opened to reveal a torn page.
FAQ
Do items float away if I drop them?
Some do. A dropped Anti-Rope Cannon can float away, a dropped Anti-Rope Spool drifts upward, and a dropped Anti-Zooka can float off too. A Faerie Lantern stays lit when it's stored in a Backpack that gets dropped.
Can you get mystical items in solo games?
Yes, though the pool is smaller. When you're on your own, Ancient Statues leave out the Bugle of Friendship, Ritual Dagger and Scout Effigy, and the Cursed Skull never shows up in solo games.
Does eating packaged food affect your run?
It can. The Naturalist badge requires escaping the island without eating any packaged food, so eating one Granola Bar, Trail Mix or Scout Cookie can cost you the badge.
Can you revive a dead teammate in PEAK?
Yes. An Ancient Statue brings a fallen teammate back at the cost of some Hunger and Curse, and a Scout Effigy revives a dead teammate at a spot you choose.
