Shelters, food and water stations, and traps are the everyday tools that keep you alive in Green Hell's Amazon jungle. Shelters give you a place to rest and save your progress. Stations help you keep meat from spoiling and make dirty water safe to drink, and traps catch animals and fish while you're busy doing something else. Knowing what each one does, and when to build it, makes the early game much easier.

How shelters work in Green Hell
Shelters are your home base in the jungle, and their main job is letting you save your progress. Some of them also let you sleep, which is how you restore your energy. It's worth having one early, so you have a safe place to save before you head off on a long trip.
The hut shelter is the usual first pick, since it's one of the cheapest builds that can both save and sleep. The small shelter only lets you save, so you'll need a separate bed to sleep there. The medium bamboo shelter has separate spots for saving and sleeping, but you need to find its blueprint first.
Where you build matters too. A common plan is one main camp with a few smaller camps spread through the jungle, so there's always a place to save close to wherever you are. Cover matters as well, because rain will put out a fire that isn't under a roof.
Beds, sleep and worms
A bed is much better than sleeping on bare ground. Sleeping rough carries a risk of worms, which are parasites, and it hurts your sanity more than a bed would. A bed raises your sanity, so it's worth the materials when you can spare them.
You don't always have to build one. Points of interest on the map often come with a bed already, so you can rest without spending materials. If you do end up on the ground, light a fire nearby, since it lowers the chance of getting worms.
How to get clean water at water stations
Water is the most urgent need in the jungle, because running out of it is fatal, and most of the water you find is dirty. Drinking it will likely give you parasites that raise how much nutrition you need, so save it for when you have no other choice.
Early on, coconuts do most of the work. A coconut bowl can catch rain, and you can fill a coconut half with dirty water and set it over a fire to boil away the parasites. Once you have the materials, a water collector takes over. It drips clean water into a container placed underneath, even on days without rain, and rain fills it much faster.
Filters are the other route. You pour dirty water into the top, and clean water comes out below. The bamboo water filter is one option, and the mud water filter stores clean water in its own tank. You can carry dirty water to a filter in a coconut bidon.
Drying and smoking meat at food stations
Raw meat spoils fast, so the dryer and smoker are how you keep it for later. The dryer cures raw meat in the open air, and it comes in wood and bamboo versions. Rain pauses the drying, so put it under a roof or inside a shelter to keep it going.
The smoker works differently. It needs a small fire underneath, and food goes on its grate rather than on the spots you use to cook over the campfire. Dried meat keeps much longer than cooked meat, so the dryer is the better pick when you're stocking up, while cooking suits food you plan to eat soon.
How traps work in Green Hell
Most traps need a blueprint before you can build them, and you find those while exploring. The stone trap is in your notebook from the start. Once a trap is set, it does its work while you're off doing something else, which is why traps are worth the effort.
Where you place a trap matters, since different animals use different spots. Animals tend to repeat their daily routes, so a trap on a trail or at a narrow crossing has a better chance. Watering holes draw prey, but predators like jaguars and black caimans hunt there too, so water traps are safer away from those hunting grounds.
Traps only spring when you aren't looking at them, so set them and move on. Check them regularly too, since a dead animal left in a killer trap eventually turns into bones.
Larvae or maggots work as bait in the fishing traps and small-animal traps, so keep some on hand. Water traps also come with a hazard. You often have to wade in to collect a catch, and piranhas, stingrays and leeches live in those waters, so build where you can reach without stepping in.
Which traps catch meat and fish
The killer trap is the heavy hitter for land animals. It catches medium-sized game, and on a common animal route it doesn't even need bait. It has to be reset after each catch.
The cage trap is for smaller creatures like mice, cane toads and spiders.
The water traps handle fish and prawns. The prawn trap is the only trap that catches prawns, and they're a common source of protein. Fishing rod traps and stick fish traps catch fish such as piranha and peacock bass.
Plan on building several traps, since one rarely covers your protein needs.
What to build first
Start with shelter, finding or building one before dark. Next, get a fire going, because it helps you cook and get food and water. Then sort out water with coconut bowls or boiling, moving to a water collector or filter once you have materials. Traps come last, once you have a base, since they keep protein coming in while you handle everything else.
FAQ
How long does a dryer take to dry meat in Green Hell?
Most meats take about 24 hours in a dryer, while fatty meats like peccary and tapir take about 26 hours. A dryer holds seven pieces at once, so one dryer can handle a full batch.
How long does dried meat last compared with cooked meat?
Dried meat stays good for about five days after drying finishes, while cooked meat lasts about two days. Drying trims a little of the meat's nutritional value compared with cooking it, so it's a trade-off between lasting longer and getting slightly less from each piece.
Do you need a container under a water filter?
Not with the mud water filter, which stores its clean water itself. The bamboo water filter needs a container underneath to catch what comes out.
What does the killer trap catch?
It catches medium-sized game: capybara, collared peccary, South American tapir, armadillo and giant anteater. On a common animal route it catches them regularly without bait.
