All 42 Playable Officers in Dynasty Warriors 3 Remastered

Updated on November 1, 2026 (3 days ago)

Playable officers are the generals you control in battle in Dynasty Warriors 3: Complete Edition Remastered, and you pick one to lead each fight. The roster is built from figures of the Three Kingdoms era and Chinese legend, and you unlock most of them as you play. Collecting the full roster is one of the game's big long-term goals.

What Playable Officers Are in Dynasty Warriors 3 Remastered

The game is built around big battles where one officer takes on huge numbers of enemy soldiers at once. The officer you choose decides which weapon and moveset you bring into the fight.

The roster is split into Wei, Wu, Shu and an Other group of figures who don't belong to any of the three kingdoms, such as Zhang Jiao, Dong Zhuo, and the legendary Fuxi and Nuwa. Ziluan is also in that group, coming from Dynasty Warriors: Origins.

Once unlocked, an officer stays with you, and you can take them into Free Mode to replay any stage you've opened.

The Xtreme Legends expansion is part of the remaster. It gives seven officers their own extra stories, including Lu Bu, Meng Huo and Yuan Shao.

How to Unlock Every Playable Officer

You start with three officers from each kingdom, and the rest open up in two main ways. The first is clearing a Musou Mode story, which is the campaign that follows one officer through a set of battles. Some officers unlock after one clear with an officer from a certain kingdom, while others need clears with two different officers.

The second way is a specific event inside a battle. Certain officers join you only if you do something particular during a fight, such as beating one enemy general before another or keeping a certain general alive. Because these tie to particular battles, you may need to replay a stage to get them.

Zhang Liao, Taishi Ci, Sun Quan and Meng Huo can only be unlocked inside Musou Mode, never in Free Mode. Difficulty doesn't affect unlocks, so you can work toward them on any setting.

Which Playable Officers to Unlock First

A few officers open far more of the roster than the rest. Xiahou Dun's Musou Mode story unlocks more officers than any other, followed by the stories for Zhou Yu and Zhao Yun. All three are starting officers, so you can begin with them right away.

Hulao Gate is the other battle to plan around. One fight there leads to Diaochan, Lu Bu and Dong Zhuo, and Dong Zhuo only opens after the other two are beaten.

Officer Weapons and How Officers Grow

Each officer has their own weapon type and moveset, and the weapons you find are made for that officer alone. Every weapon has a base attack, and many also carry an element, which adds an extra effect to your attacks.

Officers grow as you play. Their stats develop, and new weapons and items come along the way.

Xtreme Legends adds a fifth weapon for each officer from the original roster, and those only appear on Chaos difficulty.

FAQ

Q.

Which officers do you start with?

You begin with Zhao Yun, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei for Shu, Xiahou Dun, Dian Wei and Zhang He for Wei, and Zhou Yu, Sun Shangxiang and Huang Gai for Wu. All of them are available as soon as you start a new save.

Q.

What is the fastest way to unlock every officer?

A set order of Musou Mode clears, starting with Xiahou Dun, can unlock the full roster, and the order matters. Each clear unlocks the officer you need for a later story, so skipping ahead can leave you stuck. Fuxi and Nuwa come last, since Fuxi needs clears that use Liu Bei, Cao Cao and Sun Jian, and Nuwa needs clears that use Sun Shangxiang, Daqiao, Xiaoqiao and Zhenji. Ziluan needs only one clear with any officer.

Q.

How do you get an officer's fourth weapon?

You need Hard difficulty or higher, since Easy and Normal never award one, and you must play as the officer who owns the weapon. Musou Mode and Free Mode both work, but the side you fight on matters, because each side gets its own weapons on shared battlefields. The weapon appears either as a Precious Item at a fixed spot on the map or on an enemy transport unit that carries it, and that unit runs off along a set route unless you catch it.
