All 35 Materials in Dress to Impress

Updated on (4 days ago)

Materials are the finish layer of a Dress to Impress outfit: swap a dress from Matte to Sequins or Latex and the same item reads completely differently under the runway lights. Unlike patterns, a material keeps the layer's color fully changeable, which makes them the cheapest way to make a recolored item look custom-made.

How materials work

Every item layer starts on its Default material, and any material you apply replaces the finish while leaving color editing untouched. That independence is the trick: one dress can be matte black, sequined black, or latex black without touching a single color slider. Materials arrived with the Winter 2024 update and became a core styling layer almost immediately.

Free versus Materials+

The free lineup covers the essentials: glitters, silks, metallics, leather, denim, and neon. The Materials+ gamepass (299 Robux, giftable) adds 25 more finishes, leaning into the premium textures: rhinestones, lace, velvet, crocodile leather, animal prints, and chainmail. If you compete in themed rounds regularly, the pass finishes tend to carry unusual themes (mermaid scales, armor, vintage fabrics) that the free set cannot fake.

Using finishes in judged rounds

  • Match finish to theme: latex and neon for futuristic themes, velvet and lace for vintage, scales for aquatic.
  • Mixed finishes on adjacent layers read as intentional tailoring; a single finish over everything reads flat.
  • Sparkle finishes photograph loudest on the runway, but matte layers underneath keep them from swallowing the outfit.

FAQ

Q.

How do materials work in Dress to Impress?

Select an item layer and apply a material to change its finish, from Matte to Sequins to Latex. The layer's color stays fully editable, so materials and colors combine freely.

Q.

What does the Materials+ gamepass include?

25 additional finishes beyond the free set, including rhinestones, lace, velvet, crocodile leather, animal prints, and chainmail. It costs 299 Robux and can be gifted to other players.

Q.

Do materials replace patterns?

No, they are separate layers of customization. Patterns print a design onto an item, while materials change its surface finish, and a material stays applied while you keep recoloring the layer.
